Seaweed

Seaweed Sarong
Pattern: Knitty Gritty Episode 207 "Just Beachy"
Yarn: Tahki Cotton Classic 3719
Needles: Takumi Clover Bamboo size 13
A one day FO! Started this baby on the way to Kris’s hockey game this morning at 11am, and with some breaks in between for some reading, meals, phone calls, and exercise, I finished her up while watching Six Feet Under at 9pm. I chose not to incorporate beads throughout my knitting (like the pattern suggests) I do plan to sew some on before I mail it off to my Mimi sis in Hawaii. Her birthday is tomorrow (the 12th) so she knows it will be late
The lace pattern was pretty simple to memorize, and not too hard to work on while watching TV (that is always a plus on my "rest" day!) I am unsure on whether I should block the sarong, as it is kind of cool in its "uneven" nature, but I don’t want it to look shabby–thoughts?

Here is a closeup shot of the yarn and the stitches. I loved working with this yarn–great cotton! I have several more skeins in my stash (some periwinkle purchased for this project, and some gold that I don’t know what to do with yet…) so I will have the chance to work with it again soon. No problems with the knitting process–I hope it wears well…

Jenny pup thinks that it wears very well. She thinks she is a queen–you can see it in her eyes, can’t you?
I wish Kris’s hockey game would have turned out a winner like my FO–this is the worst team he has ever been on. I can’t quite put my finger on it, because the team is not THAT bad, but they can never get a break! Crazy penalties that make no sense… then Kris got a goal today but they disqualified it because one of his team mates was in the goalie’s crease. No one else saw that happen… only the ref. So, yeah, their record is abyssmal– like 0-9-1 or something horrid. Such a turn around from the #1 team he was on last year…

At least he can still do a good face-off pose! The final score ended up being 6-2. Yeah, pretty sad…
I had class all day yesterday at school–seems to be the norm lately, so Sundays are my free day to do my own thing. I try to save my school work for other days… if I can afford to… I need that little bit of "decompression" time. Obviously, I knit the sarong today, and I started a book that is not directly related to school reading (but about rare books, nonetheless), Out of the Flames. I also found time for this little gem of a film, Bride and Prejudice. I loved the Bollywood style and colors in this film. It was the perfect remedy for today: fun and fanciful.
My sock is coming along swimmingly. I am ready to turn the heel! Won’t be long before I can show it off as one half of the pair
In another case of subterranean knitting: Chelsea and I whip out the needles and yarn as we wait for the Green line train… (see how humid it was in DC? see my bad hair?)

There are some plans to meet up with Donna, Eilene and Heather tonight for some knitty action–it has been awhile. Details will follow…
Have a good week, everyone
UPDATE 11:03am: I decided to block the Seaweed sarong… she is laying out and sunning herself on the blocking board on my kitchen table!
Thanks for the compliments on the turquoise shrug–I picked it up when I was at the Rehoboth outlets a few weeks ago at a teeny-bopper kind of store–I think it was called Rave. It has drop stitches throughout the whole garment–I wish I could look at something and be able to recreate it!
Update 3:54 pm: The Seaweed sarong is finished blocking… and in that process I found that it also could be used as a shawl/capelet.

… and as a mosquito net and an apron… yeah, I got creative. I am glad I blocked it, as it does bring out the lace and the pointed edges more. Next, add the beads!

love the sarong! the colour is beautiful. you have one lucky sis! also, love the shrug you’re wearing in that bottom picture!
I’ve been meaning to knit that sarong. It turned out great. Your sis is going to love it. I would block it. Not that I’m an expert on lacey stuff, but the consensus is lace needs to be blocked.
Amy
Great sarong! I’m going to vote for blocking too. I think it will bring out the beautiful pattern even more.
You call that humidity hair??? I came home last week looking like a fluffball! You’re one lucky girl if that’s as bad as it gets! By the way, did you make that lovely blue shrug (is it a shrug?) you’re wearing in that picture?
I love the sarong. It is so adorable. I think I’m going to have to make one! IMHO…I would try to block it. It still looks great, but
I think the lace pattern would stand out even more.
See you tonight!
I love the sarong! It really does look like seaweed. Looks like everyone wants you to block it. I’m not a lace knitter, so I’m not going to weigh in on it, though I think it looks nice now. It will be perfect for Hawaii — you have a very lucky sister!
Love the sarong! I would vote for blocking, though it does look nice as is. The fact that it worked up so quickly is tempting…I should make one for my sister in the Marshall Islands, what with the year-round beachiness and all.
Wow! I can’t believe you knit all that in one day!!! That is really great, your sister will love it!!!
I adore your dog…the look on her face just kills me…like “why are you doing this to me????” I love it!!
Cheryl
The sarong is really cute! Sounds like I nice easy project. I have no vote either way on the blocking issue since I haven’t got a clue.
As for the hockey game, called back for someone in the crease?! That didn’t stop the NHL from giving the Dallas stars the cup winning goal in the 1999 finals against Buffalo…but I’m not bitter.
Can’t wait to see your finished sock. Socks are so much fun!
Hope classes are going well. Have a great week!
Wow, I was so surprised to see that you finished the sarong already. Speed fingers! I might sew the beads on first to see how they weight the fabric before I blocked it.
I’m glad you saw Bride and Prejudice, I loved it. The main actress is a movie goddess in India.
Better luck to Kris!
Your sarong in gorgeous!! The color is perfect for summer – cool and crisp! I can’t believe fast it’s knitting up. We’ll have to meet up on one of your next visits to DC!
The sarong is lovely! Fast FO is really therapautic … just makes you feel so good! LOL!
Is that a shrug that you are wearing? At first glance I thought it was a OSW! Love the colour!
Have a wonderful evening with the girls tonight … I think there’ll be beauty-pics in your next post, right?
Your sister is going to love her new sarong! It turned out excellent. Nothing better than a one day FO huh?
Your sarong is beautiful. Make sure to post a pic of it when it’s blocked!
Where is the pattern of that ballarena tank? It’s really nice.
I miss the humidity…am I cazy? I can’t stand the dry heat of california….plus I have no AC and am DYING here.
I love the colour of the seaweed sarong yarn. It is going to look great.
The sarong turned out really pretty! you sister’s going to love it
.
Beautiful sarong. The color is perfect for the beachy look.
I’m gonna keep my eyes peeled for you at L’Enfant Plaza.
The sarong for you sis is just gorgeous! Nothing like a one day project knit up! I would have voted for blocking too, but of course you’ve already done. The color is just perfect for the sarong. In Hawaii, I’m sure you sister will just adore this.
And I liked the little shrug top you are wearing too. It’s very cute!
I love the colour of the sarong – I never thought of knitting a sarong, they are a summer essential for me – I will have to look for that pattern.
That’s a gorgeous color. Cute tank top pattern too. Is the periwinkle as vibrant as the green?
Love the Sarong! It is awesome! Can’t wait to see you tonight…it’s been too long !
xo Donna
Lauren,
I LOVE the sarong. It is oing to be my next project with out a doubt. I dont know why, but the yarn looks “spongey” in the pictures! It looks like a fun knit.
I miss you, L! If you are ever in NJ, call me! Email me! Anything!
And yes, i will totaly dye!
Seaweed is gorgeous! Lucky sis. She’ll have fun wearing it in Hawaii. I wish you were comign to Hawaii with me this week. We’d have fun being adventurous and then taking knitting breaks on the beach.
I loved Bride and Prejudice, too!
Way too CUTE! Your sis is going to LOVE it to pieces!!! So many cute projects, no wonder we all have HUGE stashes. There just is WAY too much stuff to make!
BTW, I love the new picture that you have up in the corner (although the closeup of the eye was cool also)
I love the seaweed sarong. What a great pattern and color. Your sister will love wearing it on the beach.
The sarong is great! Hmm…i think it would be great for beach parties!
The sarong looks great! It’ll be a great birthday present for you sister.
What’s new-I love your knitting! That sarong is cool. It only took one day? UGH I should stop reading blogs-I keep adding to my to-do list.
That is a lovely sarong! What a needle wizard you are.
I love that sarong! you knit it so quick…mmm. I’m in knit envy over it! gorgeous.
Love, love , love the sarong!!!
love the sarong! great color too!
refs are blind i tell ya! they never see the guy that elbow’s you in the face, but when you score a goal — magically they wake up!
Lolly, I love that sarong! It even looked cute before blocking. And kudos to you for being so supportive of Kris and his hockey. That sport just bores me to tears.
Oooh! Hockey! So nice to see hockey, even if it isn’t the NHL. I’ll take what I can get for now
