Dear Miss Kahlo

Published by lolly at 12:30 am under Kahlo afghan

Kahlo Afghan (Mimi’s Wedding Afghan)
Started: June 11th, 2005 / Finished: July 16th, 2005
Pattern: Lion Brand Knitted Circle Throw
Yarn: Lion Brand Homespun in most of the recommended colors
Needles: Size 11 Bamboo DPNs / Denise Interchangeables

Notes: This pattern was so much fun! Starting as a small portable project on DPNs, it quickly grew on the circular needles, and before I knew it, I was dealing with multiple color changes and several hundred stitches! Towards the end, I changed the color scheme to use up some of the leftover Homespun skeins. I decided not to add fringe, like the catalog picture includes, because Homespun can become quite fuzzy and unruly when cut (the ply unwinds and causes a mess) and I figured this was not a good trait for fringe… A crocheted edge would be a nice touch, but unfortunately, I lack those mad skillz. In the model picture, the YOs are not as noticeable as mine, and I think a light blocking may help them blend in more. (It does look like a watermelon… doesn’t it?)

Overall, I am very happy with the result, and I hope that Mimi and Daniel will be when they receive it. I plan to block it (if I can find a space large enough!) and send it off to Hawaii soon after! I even have enough leftovers to make a mini-version of this afghan in the future… a big thanks to Renee for sending a skein to me (see the purplish stripe? that is it!) and to Eilene for allowing me to borrow her Denise Interchangeables as this baby kept on getting bigger!

Oui oui, that is THREE finished objects in ONE week…. I don’t know if this will ever happen again–I feel so accomplished! Speaking of FOs, I included a picture on Thursday’s entry of my new Market Bag in action… see how she stretches…

In my travels this past week, I came across a very cute and rare species–the Pink Monkey–her habitat is the concrete jungle of NE DC, and her defense mechanism? Wielding two wooden sticks and a ball (or two) of yarn!

Unfortunately, my time with Miss Jenna was short–Lolly had to run off to class. Hmph.
… and at my class, where all of our class breaks are devoted to all things knitty, fellow Knitibrarian Shayna revealed her newest FO: Ultra Femme from SnB Nation! She made is for her sister–how generous is that?
It is hard to see in this picture, but the bottom half of the sweater actually has little beads in the yarn! It is SO pretty! Wouldn’t a black velvet ribbon look smashing on this little number? :)
Got home from class in the afternoon, and this baby was waiting on the doorstep… I can’t wait to start it!
Should I wait till my classes are over or just delve in? :)

Congrats on finishing the great afghan! Were the ends out of control? Definitely no fringe was the way to go.

I love the blanket! It looked like a watermelon at first glance with those yo’s. Oh, do I feel better, another knitter who can’t crochet. I thought I was alone. It gets me when a knitting pattern calls for crochet edging, do all knitters automatically crochet? This is something I am going to learn but maybe this winter. Anyway, great job on the blanket.

congratulations on a great week of finishing-I’m stuck on two boring wraps that just seem like miles of st.st.-maybe I need to start something else. I love the afgan, think I’ll get that pattern. Jane

Your Kahlo looks BEAUTIFUL — lucky sister!! And how totally exciting to have three FO in one week.

  5. iselon 17 Jul 2005 at 8:21 am

Lolly, that is amazing!!! I cannot believe you’re done with it already.
The colors look great. I like the no fringe look better than the original. You did a great job.

The afghan is GORGEOUS!!! I love it and might just have to give that one a try as I am in need of a new afghan :-)

My Harry Potter was delivered Saturday to my WORK address (yes, I’m a moron)…so I can’t wait to get there tomorrow to grab my book :-)

  9. LisaBon 17 Jul 2005 at 10:29 am

That afghan looks lovely! Way to go with all the FO’s. I love getting a bunch finished at one time. Makes one feel so accomplished (and not so guilty for having 3 or more waiting to go)!

I say delve right in to the book. You don’t need to go to classes do you?! ;)

  10. knittingnurseon 17 Jul 2005 at 10:45 am

    Go Lolly, Go Lolly!!!!!
Kahlo is absolutely amazing. Love the colors, YOs, the lack of fringe (I’m not a fringe girl myself), WOW!

Wathing the end of today’s Tour de France stage but checking everybody out as well.

I got my HP in the mail yesterday as well. YEA! I am going to start it this evening curled up on the couch. Yeah for Harry!

What WILL we do after year 7????? I hope that the rumours I heard of her writing a few “post Hogwarts” books are true. . . . . .

The afghan looks great, Lolly. It’s definitely your week for FO’s.

As for the book, I say delve right in…I just finished reading it.

  13. Lizon 17 Jul 2005 at 11:26 am

Wow, Lolly! What a gorgeous afghan.

  14. atouriaon 17 Jul 2005 at 12:24 pm

Your afghan is awesome! It reminds me of a tree trunk, telling a different story with each ring.

I love that ultra femme. Post a pic with her sis modeling it! :)

  15. Wandaon 17 Jul 2005 at 12:25 pm

That Afghan is fabulous! It is truly splendid. I love the colors you chose and I can’t imagine the married couple not loving it! This makes me want to make one. How was knitting with the Homespun? I might consider making one. Actually I guess knitting it with Homespun would make it machine washable, that’s not a bad trade-off.

I say Delve right into HP!

  16. Caraon 17 Jul 2005 at 12:41 pm

Busy, busy! My goodness! Kahlo looks fantastic. I’m sure your sister will LOVE it!

Lauren– That afghan is AMAZING! I love it! Love it, Love it! I also think that the top your friend made from Stitch N’ Bitch is so cute… I might need to dig up that pattern!

Congrats on all the FO’s! You are a knitting machine!

  18. Ginaon 17 Jul 2005 at 1:28 pm

That is so amazingly beautiful! It really does look like the rings of a tree.

  19. Agneson 17 Jul 2005 at 1:40 pm

I don’t think you can wait … go ahead and just dive in. Many people I know have actually finished reading the book!
The afghan is beautiful … and yeah, the center looks a bit like watermelon! I am sure Mimi and Daniel would love it. Congrats on the three FOs in one week! That’s some accomplishment I tell ya!

  20. Jennon 17 Jul 2005 at 2:12 pm

Beautiful…..looks so warm and cozy! Might just have to add it to my to knit list!

  21. Eileneon 17 Jul 2005 at 4:52 pm

I love your Market bag. Have you used it yet? It is such a rich shade of blue. Will you bring it this week for knit night if we can get together?

Awesome…your afgan is done. It is so unique & colorful. Very cool! I feel the need to get out my bow & arrow though! ;-)

  26. jillon 17 Jul 2005 at 7:26 pm

Harry Potter was on my doorstep at 9:30 am yesterday - gotta love Amazon! I am already 70 pages in (I was in a wedding this weekend, so that is actually amazing… ) But, I keep putting it down bc I know if I read it too fast I’ll be so depressed when it is finished!

  27. sarah b.on 17 Jul 2005 at 7:35 pm

Wow! This is yet another pattern that I don’t think I would have tried before, but seeing your version is definitely motivating. It looks spectacular!

  28. Carolynon 17 Jul 2005 at 7:47 pm

    Ahhh….I love that afghan!

Beautiful afghan! I know Mimi will enjoy it!!

Oh! Go ahead and start it!! Allthough, I am trying not to read mine too quickly, esp since I have a long plane flight to CA!

  34. Tamon 17 Jul 2005 at 11:18 pm

The afghan is beautiful! I’m sure Mimi will love it! Congrats on the three FOs. I’m a bit green over here! =)

  35. Libbyon 18 Jul 2005 at 6:52 am

I love the afghan. The colors are perfect. I totally agree with the no fringe choice. I’ll have to add this to my to-do (at some point) list.

  36. Suzanneon 18 Jul 2005 at 9:23 am

The afghan turned out fabulous! I love all the different colors - I’m definitely adding this to my wish list. So many FOs lately - congratulations!!

  37. tonion 18 Jul 2005 at 9:56 am

I Love that afghan! It’s so bright it jumps off the computer at me! Fantastic, wonderful, awesome job!!!!

Can’t wait to see what you think of HBP. I have to admit, I was a little bit disapointed. I’m going to read it again. I had to read azkaban twice before I liked it.

Oh and ultra femme is soooo pretty! I can imagine all those little beads! What a neat idea she had to do that!

  38. Erinon 18 Jul 2005 at 10:12 am

Oh dear, if you delve right in you won’t be able to put it down so you’d better set aside a good tweleve hours or so of non-stop reading time. It’s great, but you’ll just be desperate for the next installment!

  39. Samanthaon 18 Jul 2005 at 10:41 am

The afghan looks AMAZING! I really am going to look into the pattern. I’m not all that talented in the double pointed needle category, but I do OK … How long did you use dpns before switching to circular needles?

I got H.P and the H.B.P. for my birthday yesterday. I’m debating whether or not I should finish reading the book I’m currently reading or just dive into Harry Potter. *lol*

  40. Jennaon 18 Jul 2005 at 10:43 am

Ooohh, the Kahlo, she is beautiful. I really like the YO’s, it kind of make the blanket look like some picture from the Hubble Telescope and the holes are the stars. I’m sure it’s really warm and cuddly.

I’m glad to see a finished Ultra-Femme, I’m thinking about making a modified one, I’ll have to check out her blog for the specs.

  41. Dianaon 18 Jul 2005 at 11:48 am

Nice job! I hope your sister loves it. They’ll always remember that you made it for them.

  42. blossomon 18 Jul 2005 at 12:31 pm

wow, the afghan looks wonderful. is the name kahlo afghan inspired by frida kahlo’s colors? because it kind of looks like it!

i have so much respect for knitters who knit afghans and blankets!! congrats to you!

(i also like the cream top your friend made, looks really lovely!)

  43. Momon 18 Jul 2005 at 1:47 pm

I do love the afghan! Maryn will too. Thanks for the visit yesterday. It was good to see you, as always. XXOO

  44. Monion 18 Jul 2005 at 2:01 pm

Looks great,Lolly! and it does look like a watermelon! how cute :) You sister and her husband are going to love it.

  45. Annieon 18 Jul 2005 at 2:45 pm

WOW! That afghan is awesome. I imagine that would take me about 2 yrs to finish at my rate. You’re awesome! I also love your friend’s Ultra Femme. I’ve been wanting to try this but am scared b/c in the SnB photo they have the chick wearing a pink one with a black bra and it’s really see-thru. Definitely looks like it could be a possibility for me though if worn with a matching bra : )!

  46. Annon 18 Jul 2005 at 6:01 pm

Um, did I read this correctly? You finished an AFGHAN in less than a week?!

I will now bow to your knitting prowess. It’s gorgeous.

  47. Mimion 18 Jul 2005 at 9:41 pm

I love the afghan Lolly. Thank you so much! I am so glad you are happy with it too. I can’t believe all the comments on it. You have impressed people with your knitting prowess. Well, I have put the knitting aside for a day and I am doing needlepoint. I also have tons of scrapbooking to start…wooohoo! Love you so much! Mwah!

  48. margeneon 18 Jul 2005 at 10:10 pm

You go away for a few days and it takes all day to get through only a few of your Blogline picks. It was worth coming, even late in the day, to see that gorgeous afghan! It is perfectly named, too. Nice job.

  49. Jennyon 19 Jul 2005 at 1:06 am

Man, Lolly!!! THAT is the coolest (and probably warmest!) afghan I have ever seen. What a great idea. The colors are so fabulous!

want to start reading HP6. Must refrain for at least a day. ARGH!

  50. Susanon 19 Jul 2005 at 7:51 am

Wow! That afghan seemed to go by so quickly (well, to me at least) and it’s impressive. I can’t imagine knitting one of the last rounds; they must have been so, so, so long. I’m sure your sister is going to love it. Actually, with the afghan and the seaweed wrap that you’ve finished this month, your sisters are so lucky to have such a nice sister who knits cool stuff for them.

  51. elisaon 19 Jul 2005 at 8:10 am

Lolly, the afghan is fan-freakin’-tastic! You did a beautiful job with it, and I am sure that Mimi and Daniel will cherish it forever. :) You’re a terrific sister!

    Have a great week, darlin’.

  52. Danielleon 21 Jul 2005 at 7:48 pm
