Knitting on a Shoestring OR 1 1/2 FOs

Virtue Beret
Yarn: Rowan Cotton Tape inĀ Glint (from sweet Kris!)
Pattern: It’s A Tape Thing (Rowan 2004)
Needles: Size 11 and size G crochet hook
This hat was easy and fun. It is mainly knit in reverse stockinette, with a band of crochet (4 rows) around the edge. I modified the pattern a little making the crochet band shorter and smaller gauge (it called for a J hook, and I used a G) and I got the fit I wanted–it was way too slouchy with the J hook. The only thing about it? This hat is hard to wear with bangs. It smushed my hair down and made my bangs go in my eyes, hence wearing it further back on my head in the above pictures.

The yarn was absolutely great, and I will definitely use it again. It is like knitting with shoelaces… but in a good way! |
I have not yet cast on for my Kidsilk Haze cami, and I am glad that I waited. I was going about it the wrong way! The directions in the book, Weekend Knitting, were very unclear about what to do with the DMC Cotton, and I just assumed that it was held with the KSH throughout the whole knit. Thanks to Terhi and Blossom, I now realize that the DMC is used for a crocheted edging around the neckline, sleeve holes, and hem.
I hate it when knitting directions are vague! (and the picture in the book did not help either…) Thanks girls… I sure would not have figured that out on my own!
Last night was a sad night over at the Lolly house. One of our all-time favorite shows, Six Feet Under, had its series finale. Gosh, I am going to miss it. I love those characters and the storylines so much… now Sunday nights just won’t be the same.
While watching the last episode, in its 75-minute glory, I finally finished Trekking sock #1, through my tears and sobs…

Yeah, yeah, it took me long enough. I still have a whole other sock to go. Maybe I will finish it by December. Well, sock 1 is a little big. I knew this was going to be the case… thank goodness it is not really big. It is still very wearable. So my first sock is officially finished… I am proud! (Why is that I am more nervous about putting my feet on the internet than I am about putting my face out there?)
A large part of my weekend was also spent on reading. I don’t get much time to read what I want anymore with grad school, but this two week break (now only 1 week left) has given me the chance to read for fun!

This book received rave reviews in 2003 when it came out. I bought it then, figuring I would be able to fit it in. Not until 2005 did I even open the cover. Wow, what a great story though! This book has been so engrossing. It is a non-fiction about the events surrounding the 1892-3 World’s Fair in Chicago. The author really did some great archival/library research for this one! … and you know how I love that! |
Have a good one!

It’s too bad Six Feet Under is over. I’ll miss that show as well. Hopefully there will be other shows just as interesting in the fall. Your hat looks great. One of these days I’ll have to knit one up as I have the book but yet to knit anything from it.
ohhhh, that hat is SO cute on you!! And nice job on that sock!
That hat looks so cute on you! Thanks for the book recommendation, I’m always looking for a new one! (I especially need one for our upcoming trip - lots of plane and train time travel)
Aren’t we quite the French ingenue. Oui oui! You look magnifique!
Have a great day,
Amy
!! That hat looks fabulous on you! I love it.
Thanks for the book recommendation. I just might have to pick that one up.
You are so adorable! You look absolutely fabulously!
Congrats on sock#1. Do you like wearing handknit sock? I love them! Get #2 done and you can wear them together.
What a cute beret, and it seems like you knit it up in no time at all! It looks sweet with your bangs like that. I’m sad to hear that 6 Feet Under is ending… I’m way behind and still watching Season 3 on DVD. I love Nate!
Love the hat and the sock! You just whipped that out!
Was so sad last night, but what a great final epi. I was totally sobbing at the end, though…
wow, you look supercute! love the beret.
The hat looks great and you are beautiful! The sock is fab too. Which heel did you do? I’m into heels these days. Still haven’t found one I love.
SFU. Ah mixed feelings. I did like the show but felt like this season was beyond depressing. Do you watch Entourage? We think it’s fantastic. That ends soon too, but HBO is always there to entertain! Larry David is back on soon!
Love the hat and sock!
I have some Kidsilk Haze stashed away and think that might be just the project.
I, too, was confused by Weekend Knitting’s directions for the cami. I was browsing through it last week and couldn’t figure out what the DMC thread was for! It wasn’t just you– thanks for clearing it up for me
That beret looks absolutely wonderful on you! I have to say I agree with you, we prepare our faces and we take the best pictures we can because, honestly, our faces are out there seeing the world everyday. But feet??? Those suckers stay hidden most of the time, so I can understand how that could make someone a little uncomfortable to be put on the internet for the world to see!
Your hat looks fabulous.
oh you look so adorable with that hat! love love love the pictures!
Oh I so love the colors in that sock, so very fally. I’m sure the second one will go quicker, okay well 99% sure, maybe 75% sure. Well I’m really not sure at all, but you have my support.
I was knitting a sock and sobbing last night, too, during SFU! I knew you’d be knitting and sobbing, but I had no idea it would be a sock.
Very very cute beret!!! I love it.
Even if the floss was just for edging, I’m going to steal the original idea and use some floss when I knit my KSH scarf. I think it will have slightly more substance that way…plus it’s pretty. And your hat is adorable (I might steal that, too!)
Lauren, we are on the same reading wave length…I have the same book waiting at the library for me to pick up! I had put it on hold when we went to Chicago early in the summer and have waited all summer for it to come to me. Can’t wait to read it!
You look so CUTE in those photos! Smashing hat!!!
Cute hat and I love the sock too - that colorway is so nice. Devil in the White City is one of my all-time favorite reads. I enjoyed it so much - glad to hear that you are liking it too. The amount of research Erik Larson did is incredible as evidenced by his VAST listing of reference materials at the end. I have another of his books: Isaac’s Storm waiting to be read. Apparently, it follows the lives of several people though the 1900 hurricane that hit Galveston, TX and killed some 10,000 people. Sounds like a very engrossing read and a good history lesson. I feel so much smarter when I finish one of his books.
You are so photogenic! Another great knit off the needles. And I agree with Chelsea that I still may try the floss idea with mohair knit in the future. Enjoy your last week off!
Tanya
Very cute beret! You have such a great eye for style.
I was sad about Six Feet Under as well. I can’t decide whether I like how everything was tied up neatly or not, though. Sometimes it is nice not to have everything spelled out, but then again at least it was not a cop out ending like Seinfeld.
Wow…there is lots of new things you posted about…
1. You are sooo pretty. Oh & the hat looks fab also!
2. Congrats on your finished sock. It looks great!
3. Hot pinky is going to be gorgeous. I am so looking forward to seeing that top. It looks beautiful how it is knitting up already.
I love your berret! It’s really adorable on you. You look like a chic french grad student
I’ve heard great things about that book over and over. I might just have to plan it for when I have a break from school in January!
Cute beret - and that book is awesome!
Oh, I love that book! I re-read it after visiting Chicago last summer and had my little tourist map out the whole time figuring out where everything was.
Congrats on your finished sock! It looks great.
Love the hat too.
You look great in your hat, i’m jealous!
Love the beret!
Wow, you look like a model in your beret! It really brings out the color of your eyes, you look gorgeous!! Be sure that you don’t let second sock syndrome sink in. Don’t get discouraged by how long it takes to make them, remember you’re using tiny needles.
Let’s get together before your school starts again!
I love it!! You look so cute in it.
I LOVE your hat…and that yarn has my thinking, my LYS has all their cotton yarns on sale, maybe I should try some. I couldn’t even knit during Six Feet Under, so sad it’s ended, loved the last episode. Jane
Love that hat! I really love the sock…congratulations on your first one! I’ll be looking for many more…
Hey lolly, cute beret! can’t believe that i got hit so hard by spam tonight-couldn’t find new blogger feature so i just hid them…i cried and knitted all thru SFU last night too-i thought it was a great ending but i’m still bummed it’s over.
take care and enjoy your week before classes…
What a newsy post! You finished the beret already? your fast! It looks so cute on you! that picture of you is adorable :). I love cotton Tape. My friend, Judy, was on a cotton tape mania this past summer and I almost joined her!
Congrats on your first sock! I love those colors! I know I’ve said that before..
Devil in the White City was an awesome book! one of my favorites, actually. I so want to go to Chicago now.
Have a great week, Lolly!
How cute is that hat?!? Love it!!!!! =)
uhhhhh! love the hat, very cute!! great color.. your trekking sock looks smashing:)!!! lovely toenail polish too!
i heard that show was really good but i never pay for the premium channels:(
Your new hat looks great! I knit and cried my way through 6 ft under as well. I really will miss that show.
Love both the hat and the sock. I loved knitting socks while reading all my school assignments. (somehow made the endless reading go by easier..lol). I also know how wonderful it feels to have the time to read your ‘own’ reading.
That beret looks so cute on you! And I like the sock too… and co-ordinating nail polish.
PS: you made me laugh with your comment - but that dog does look like a rat!
oh my lord. that beret is GORGEOUS! and so are you, of course
I love the hat - the colour really suits you.
Don’t you just love one day FO’s.
You are so darn cute girl! The beret is adorable…and such cute socks
Lovely Lauren! The beret is so you, Lol! Those feet look just like mine except for the color of nail polish. Congrats on the completion of your sock. XXOO
that beret looks absolutely gorgeous on you!
love the beret! Love the sock! you rule girl!
LOVE LOVE LOVE EVERYTHING
Lovely beret Lolly. I like that alot. Great job on the sock too!
That book is one that I thought about reading too, but never got around to it. I may have to add it to my list!
Devil in the White City was a great book. I’m bummed about SFU, too. We never missed it and I’m in mourning today for the whole family.
Love the Beret! You look so chic, chic!
Love the hat (you look like a Breck Girl!! - remember those hair commercials???)…love the lone sock and girl - I LOVE 6 ft under and thought the ending was phenomenal!!!!! So sad it’s over….few shows make me sad like that when their over - Sex and the City was another great show
Okay -
1) you’re absolutely beautiful in your hat
2) the sock looks fantastic!
3) i’m adding that book to my wish list RIGHT NOW!
Have a great week, dear heart!
That hat is gorgeous! You look so stunning in that picture! Now I want to make one!!! Glad you finished your sock… Doesn’t it feel like you are done when you finish one..I hate that!
What an adorable hat… it looks great with your blond hair. Enjoy the book - it’s a page turner! I loved it!
Love the hat!
You really look great in that berret. I like how lacy it looks–great job knitting!
Lolly, you look so pretty in your beret! It’s the perfect color for you. And your socks make me think of fall (is it almost here yet?).
Lolly, I love that beret. I bought the book to make that very thing, however I haven’t gotten the cotton tape for it. I saw one made on another blog using another yarn. I sobbed through the last ten minutes of six feet under. It was a very very poignant way to end the show.
Love the beret, but I am so psyched that you are knitting the Weekend Knits tank and cowl. I planned to knit that this summer but never got to it. So I’ll live vicariously through you until I get to it next summer!
So glad you didn’t give anything away about the finale of 6FU. I am slowly catching up on that past seasons through Netflix. I am trying to not learn how it ends…which is hard considering how many people out there watch it.
Yipee for sock #1!!! Fabulous. And I love your beret — oh la la — you look very chic!
I just wanted to rave about the Erik Larson book. Loved that. It is historical fact yet reads so much like a novel. I learned a lot and I am looking forward to visiting Chicago to check out the points of interest mentioned in the book. There is a great NPR interview available on itunes with the Mr. Larson. I think you would like it. Love to read your blog. Knitting is a passion of mine as well!
Lolly - I’m going to come clean. I hate berets. Can’t stand ‘em. 98% of people should never even consider wearing them. I mean, really.
But you are SO CUTE in that damn beret! Seriously, the cutest ever. Better than that stupid model by like a million. So cute.
You are my hero! Great choice.
I’m late to the party, but I have to say - you are just too cute in that hat!!
