Take Your Sock to Work Day

I think it is confirmed… I am addicted to knitting socks. I cast on last night for Trekking sock 2 … worked straight through my TiVo tapings of Daily Show and History Detectives (anyone else watch that AWESOME show?) and then took this baby with me to work. Knitting in the car at 5:30 am, eating lunch with me and touring the Archives, and sitting and knitting after dinner… this sock, and her knitter, have had a long day!
Naturally, I am already thinking ahead to my next pair of socks…
I have a small sock yarn stash (plus some sport weight cotton that would make cute anklets gifted to me by some special girls.)
So, my question: what socks should I make? do you have a favorite pattern that you recommend? or is there a sock book that you can’t live without? what is your favorite sock yarn? please let me know!
Remember that praying mantis egg pod that Kris bought on Ebay back in May? Well, today I saw one of those babies all grown up: big, healthy and GREEN!

As far as sock books go… really… they’re all hit or miss. I have a few and not a one toots my fancy through and through. Just start collecting them thru magazines, knitty, online, etc. The free’r the better.
There are lots of free sock patterns on the internet … so many that you don’t have enough time to knit every one of them. But I like Nancy Bush’s Knitting on the Road and many others love “Socks Socks Socks” … which I have been thinking of getting one myself. Nancy Bush is going to have a new sock book soon, I think.
Cool Socks, Warm Feet by Lucy Neatby. I just got it as a gift, and it’s really packed with info. I also really like Socks on the Road, and want to knit many of those patterns (although I have a hard time finding sock yarn in solids).
I know it’s addiction. I start working the second sock yesterday and am half way now. Nancy Bush’s book “Knitting on the Road” is my favorite book. Knitting sock is so much fun, especially carry it to anywhere.
Great job on the sock. I really like that colorway. I wanna knit socks!! I love History Detectives! Watch it whenever I can.
I’m one of those weird people who refuses to get cable. If it’s on PBS, I probably know about it. History Detectives is near the top of my list of PBS favorites. Fascinating.

Hey Lolly girl! I, too, love Nancy Bush’s Knitting on the Road. It’s great. What kind of needles are you using? Are they Inox? I’m really curious about what methods people love for knitting socks (dpn/magic loop/2 circs, etc.), ’cause I haven’t done many yet. Have fun!
I’ll vote for Broadripple socks found at Knitty - it comes up swell knitted on plain colored yarns too.

Ohhhh homemade gnocchi! My favourite! He is the best! I find the Knitters Handy book of patterns a great source for basic patterns. I also love the sock patterns found in interweave knits. You can also get sock patterns from them on line if you are a subscriber.
Is there a twelve step program for knitters? Do we really even want one???
Mmmm, that dinner makes me hungry. I will fight the mantis for it!
Actually - I’m a fan of simple stockinette or ribbed socks. I like to let the yarn speak to itself, and I find knitting lace or complex patterns in socks makes the process much more relaxing for me. Just my .02!

Knit the variegated skeins in the front. Love that colorway! If I were closer, I’d be asking for a dinner invitation. Cuz, who doesn’t let people they don’t know come over for gnocchi?

Knitting on the Road. Great patterns. Highly recommended. And I think the next pair should be pink. Definitely pink.

we’ve watched history detectives several times, but haven’t yet figured out when it is on consistently… i think their theme music at the beginning of the show seems so out of place, but the show is cool!
i can’t wait to finish katy so i can cast on more socks… while i like looking at socks with patterns, i generally stick to simple ribbing variations
My favorite sock is a basic 2×2 ribbed sock with the ribbing continued down the instep. I check with Ann Budd’s Knitter’s Handy Book of Patterns for the number of stitches to cast on. How about Nancy Bush’s Knitting on the Road for some more advanced patterns? or back issues of Interweave - they tend to have at least one good sock pattern per issue.
Way to go on that sock woman. You are really making progress. And good for you for starting on the second sock. You definitely don’t want to have second sock syndrome.

Favorite sock patterns huh? Well, my favorite is called Priscilla’s Dream Socks. It’s from the Fall 2000 Interweave Knits magazine. It’s great because it has the short-rowed heel and toe, and you can pretty much do whatever you want to the cuff. It’s an awesome basic sock pattern.
Sorry, can’t help you on the socks. I have never made a pair.

I love Knitting on the Road and Folk Socks by Nancy Bush. She has a new book coming out this fall which will be REALLY fab (I knit 4 of the socks for her). It only takes one sock to hook you and you sure are hooked! I do watch the History Detectives and LOVE it.

I’m using Wendy’s toe-up pattern + the pattern from teh [free] Twisted Rib pattern at Knitpicks. I learned to knit socks from Simple Socks: Plain and Fancy but only recommend it if you are a good ‘book learner’. I love that varigated yarn in the front - knit that next!!

I LUV history detectives. I haven’t made any socks yet but I have the lilac baby alpaca waiting and it tells me cables are the socks to knit. But then again almost everything says cables because I am so addicted to them.

As for socks, I only made one pair and thoroughly enjoyed the pattern: sock love from chic knits. They fit me perfectly. Also–lorna’s laces shepard sock yarn–yum!

I totally started cracking up when I read the title of your post! Too funny. As for socks, I really like the Queen Kahuna book that I’ve talked about on my blog a couple of times. Makes things pretty simple. I think you should knit up the two hanks at the bottom of the picture. Looks like that will make great fall socks to me.
Yeah! Another addicted sock knitter. Woo Hoo! Congrats on the progess of sock #2 and not having second sock syndrome. I would say that Kris deserves a pair of handknit socks. My hubby, after much convincing to try them, absolutely LOVES his. BTW, I forgot to comment on your prior post but that hat is GORGEOUS on you! Wow. What a great color.
I keep trying to convince my friends that you can sell/buy ANYTHING on eBay. I am going to have to steer them to this post so that they can see for themselves. BTW, what are you guys feeding those things? That is one major praying mantis. Holy smokes!

I’m going to have to try that gnocchi - I had really good gnocchi in Southern Italy and haven’t been able to duplicate the experience over here.
there must be something going around in the internets because I just became addicted with knitting socks as well! I’m already thinking about the next pair and what yarn to buy, mind you I havent even finished the first sock yet.

I have that same colorway of the Knitpicks sock yarn. I loved it and just had to have it.
Koigu is still my favorite sock yarn even though I have tried so many others. I love all the patterns in Knitting On the Road. I made the Friday Harbor socks for Sockapaloosa (for High Energy Jenny).
Wow are you going to be busy this fall!! I know you don’t really have time, but you have to read The Historian. It is right up your ally–all about historians and librarians:)
Oh gosh, all this reading about socks makes me want to knit some, too. I haven’t knit socks in two years. Thanks for the push, I think I have some good yarn in my stash, I just love yours. I can’t wait to see which ones you do next.
