Super Splendid Socks

Pattern: Fiber Trends Hellen’s Socks 3 / 1 Rib Cuff
Yarn: Zitron Trekking XXL #101
Needles: Size 2 aluminum DPNs
First socks ever! …and I love them! As you can see, I sped through the second one, and it is actually closer to the fit I want. The first sock was a little big, and I can only attribute this to becoming accustomed to the small DPNs. Nevertheless, they fit very well.

I finished the socks last night at my parents’ house… I did not have a darning needle with me to finish sew it all up. I loved working with this yarn, and as you can see, the colors stripes do not match up… but this does not bother me… |
Frankly, I am not sure you could ever really match the stripes effectively with this yarn. It is not patterned uniformly, so as you pull the yarn out, you never know what color will be next!
The weekend was nice, and a great way to relax and have some fun before heading back to school this afternoon. On Saturday, I had plans to meet up with Becca, and go down to DC. I wanted to introduce her to one of my other knit girls, Jenna! It just so happened that this meeting coincided with a big sale at the DC yarn shop, Stitch DC on Capitol Hill.

We all found some good deals! Becca picked up two hanks of Blue Sky Alpaca Bulky to make the Newboy cap in SnBN. (I have yarn for this pattern too!) Jenna got a great deal on some Rowan to make Bonne Marie’s great new Cutaway cardi.
…and I cheated a little on my yarn diet… I got this:

Five hanks of Elsbeth Lavold Silky Wool in #27 Periwinkle! Only $18 with tax! Can you blame me? with a deal like that?
After making out at Stitch DC, we headed to Chinatown for dinner, and then down to the Warehouse Cafe for some knitting time. Becca finally got her yarn from Knit Picks (she got Andean Silk in Sangria — I got the same yarn in Lettuce) and we both swatched for our Hourglass pullovers from Last Minute Knitted Gifts. Miss Jenna started her second sock with this great handpainted yarn.

Sunday was great too. We went to see my parents for the afternoon. We watched Guess Who, which was pretty cute, and ate a great dinner. My parents are great cooks!

…and mom’s new dessert creation: the Napoleon!

…best of luck to all of our family and friends in Alabama, Mississippi, Florida and Louisiana… we are thinking about you…

Congrats on your first socks! They look great!! Seems like you had a nice weekend too.
The socks look GREAT! And I love the Silky Wool – great color and even better price! Good luck with school today.
Woo-hoo! What great socks! For whatever reason, I am never bothered by stripes in my socks matching up. Socks seem like they should be whimsical.
BTW – looks like I’ll be in DC for a conference 10/30 – 11/2…think there’s a possibility of getting together? I’ve never been to DC before.
Have a great day back at school, dearest!
Congratulations!!!! They look great. Love the color of the Silky Wool — gorg!
Love your socks! Great work. Your mom’s dessert looks yummy. I love that color of your silky wool–what a good buy.
Congrats on finishing your socks. What a “feet”! har har! I love the color of the silky wool, too. It’s such an attractive shade. Have a great week, Lolly!
I love those socks! I’m STILL working the foot of mine. I can’t seem to knit more than a few rounds before I have to do something else. But they should be done soon (I hope). The stripes on mine don’t match up either. It actually DOES bother me, I confess. I’m OCD like that. I love the color of that Silky Wool. I had my eye on it while I was at Stitch DC as well. Good luck in class this week. It will be so weird to not have class together!
Don’t know where to start – LOVE the socks…your parents are adorable – LOVE the blue yarn and your mom’s dessert has my mouth watering – LORDIE LORDIE
omg, how cute is that pic of your family! you are one lucky girl!
congrats on your first, lovely socks – may you knit many, many more!
Don’t you LOVE socks? You’ll also love your Hourglass. Sounds like you had a good weekend.
Wow! You really got the hang of it and blew through the second sock!
What great deals on yarn. I love the periwinkle. ENJOY!
Ooh love silky wool….love that color…
Your socks look great! I think Trekking is one of the few sock yarns I havn’t tried yet. Hopefully soon though.
Looks like you had a very fun weekend. (your mom’s dessert looks very yummy). Good luck as you start the semester. I do not miss the book overload that history classes like to offer.
Lovely socks Lolly! Are you hooked now? Plus, it is so difficult to make them match. I just like them for what they are.
Beautiful color of Silky Wool. I really like that!
Great socks! The first pair would always hold a special place in our hearts. And I love the colourway. Personally, I don’t really care if the 2 match.
Lovely colour of the Silky Wool … do you have any plan for them?
To think, you used to throw down your DPNs in frustration. Now, you’ve shown them who’s boss and flown through your second sock. Congrats, they look great!
Thanks for the fun saturday, we’ll certainly do it again sometime soon. maybe we can have more beer floats
Congrats on your first socks! you are the FO girl lately, I swear!
They look nice and cozy. Oh, and I love that silky wool, too..good for you for getting such a great deal!
Congrats on the socks. They turned out great. I’m sure they are the first of many more in the future.
I just finished my Hourglass yeasterday. All that needs to be done is the finished, which is minimal. I’m looking forward to seeing how yours turns out.
Have a great day,
Amy
I’m burning nervous energy while I wait to hear from my in-laws in Louisiana. No better way to burn such energy than to ready about a fabulous pair of socks, a great weekend, and a dessert that makes my mouth water.
Those socks look fabulous. Perfect for fall!
Love the socks! They look fabulous. What are you going to make with the EL silky wool? I have some in my stash from a sale…but no project in mind yet.
congrats on the socks! THey look great!
And that price was a perfectly ok reason to cheat on your diet!
You certainly picked some great yarn for your first finished pair!
And I’m jealous about Stitch DC. I loved my visit to that store back in April. You got quite a deal for 18 bucks!
Cute socks! aren’t they so much fun to make?! Great stash enhancement too. I must stay away from there… no more stash…
Fabulous socks! And the dessert looks very yummy!
what eye candy!!!! love the socks, i am so excited for you! your first pair. 5 hanks for 18 bucks, what a steal…nepolean’s are my favorite desserts, that looked fab!!!
How fun, your first socks. And they look wonderful. Wear them with pride!
Yeah for you! Great job on your sockies! I am so jealous that you had knittin fun this weekend & hit a great sale. Looks like lots of fun and you got some nice new stash. That desert looks fantastic..yum yum
Wow, you really cranked out those socks! And first timers too! That’s awesome. They look great!
Super Splendid Socks, indeed! Gorgeous! Congratulations on joining the ranks of sock knitters.
Whee! I love Trekking XXL so much. I knit a pair using colorway #100 and you’re right, it is impossible to match up the stripes but that’s the beauty of this yarn… watching it do whatever it pleases.
Your socks are marvelous.
I always love the photos and details of your excursions out and about. Such shiny happy people!
Take care and hope you had a great afternoon at school.
I love your socks!!! Yay!!
Yummy dessert too…looks delish!
You knitted lovely socks. They look absolutely great. I am thinking of starting a pair of socks soon. I have to choose a pattern and some yarn first. Hmmmmm…that gets me to thinkin’. LOL! Have a great day/evening.
I love the socks! Watch out, they can be addictive.
Your socks look great, well done!
GREAT socks! I am (still shamefully) working on my first pair. I put them away for awhile…
If you like Trekking, you may want to check out Opal. Very cool stripe patterns!
YAY!! Your first socks!! They look so great.
And, I love the periwinkle – what a great deal!
Great lookin’ socks! I kind if like it when the stripes on socks don’t match; that way other socknitters will know they are handmade and will shower you with compliments.
yay for first socks! I hope to finish my first set pretty soon, too! They look great.
Hey – congrats on your first socks! They look great. Looks like you and Becca and Jenna had fun! I miss DC – it would have been so fun to hang out. If you come to Chicago, let me know! And I will do the same when I visit DC. Take care.
Dana
It’s been a while since I last visited. Wow, so many new projects! Glad to see the beautiful socks, beret and other fabulous pieces.
Great looking pair of socks. Yay! for your first pair. and your Mom’s Napoleon looks amazing, so ymmy!
Good luck with school.
Your socks look lovely! Congrats! I’m so nervous about socks. I can’t explain it. I suppose each knitter has something they’re afraid of tackling. It used to be cables (how silly of me!) and now its socks. I think I’m going to try to over come this by knitting a pair for my ‘pa for Christmas (his feet are too big for normal socks). We’ll see
Oh, I can’t wait to see your Hourglass
Andean silk is sooo pretty, it’ll make such a lovely sweater. And lettuce is such a gorgeous colour too!
The socks look great! Trekking looks like such a fun yarn. I can’t wait to see your Hourglass.
Nice haul…love that blue! love it! I have 4 in the moss green…we’ll have to find something to knit with it!
Hey…this was funny…
“After making out at Stitch DC…”
You sassy thing! hehe. Where’s my love? hahaha!
Nice sockies…bring them. Lets do a pair together…I’m dying to use my awesome green sock yarn. I’ll let you fondle my retros…if you let me hold your trekking!
hehe.
Yay! A finished pair of socks – that’s definitely better than I’ve ever accomplished, so congratulations! And I love the colorway.
The Napoleon looks so yummy…does Mom care to share the recipe?
your socks look wonderful, and now i’m inspired to pick up my unfinished socks and, well…finish them.
i’m sorry we missed each other at SAA this year, but i look forward to hopefully meeting you (at maybe a knitting get-together or at one of the sessions, who knows) next year in D.C.
this year, andrea and i didn’t really get anyone to come to our knitting meet-up because we only posted the sign the day before, and most people never really check the bulletin boards. next year we’ll probably spread the word through listservs or blogs.
Your socks are awesome!! Cheating on your yarn diet is OK once in awhile, especially with stunning (low calorie!) yarn like that!
I love your socks! They are awesome, and that dessert! Yum.
Wow they are beautiful! They look much better than my first pair of socks did! I hope you know, there is no turning back now… your feet won’t be happy in store bought socks now.
LOLLY!!! Long time no comment — sorry – been up to my ears!
GREAT GREAT WONDERFUL SOCKS!!!!
Love the yarn too (um $18 — couldn’t have passed it by!)
Also — nice to see your DH in his favorite orange shirt!
Hee hee!

Lolly – those are your FIRST socks ever?????? Okay… pardon me while I grump and moan and feel sorry for myself over here. I cannot get the whole sock thing to save my life. I just suck at knitting socks – bottom line.
Okay. stepping out of my own pity party now – I did want to tell you how absolutely great they look!!! You should be proud and doing a little happy dance in your new stripey socks!
I love your socks! Great colorway!! Hard to believe they are your first ever… And, by the way, I totally would have bought the Silky Wool too.
Who can resist at that price?
So, you now have your first pair of socks under your belt. How does it feel? They look super. Sock knitting can get addictive, so watch out. Of course, I’m soooo jealous of your yarn find!!! Great color.
Your socks turned out great! Especially for first socks
Not that I would know, haven’t done socks yet. That Elsebeth lavold yarn looks yummy. $18!!! You can’t beat a deal like that. Glad you had a nice weekend.
Perfect socks! Yeah, Trekking has no pattern to it, so there is NO hope for matching them up… Owell.. It teaches us to embrace the randomness!
Those socks came out really nice. I haven’t knitted socks for…hmmm…12 years now I think. I’m definately going to knit some this wonter, both for my daughter and me. Oh, and I love the hat you’ve made and the camisole you started…that is really beautiful =)
I’m happy to see that you dont live where the storm is. I’ve seen it on the news..Its so terrible!!!
Have a great day…and lucky you that can knit while your at work =)
Linda
What a cute pair of feet in a cute pair of socks!
Carefull…you know that sock knitting is addictive, no?
Your socks look wonderful.

The Napoleon looks pretty darn yummy too!!
Your socks look great Lauren! You got the sock bug! That happens after the first pair.
I’m so happy for you that Bacca moved back here! It’s really nice having your best friend living near. I wish mine did!
Thanks for caring!
Congrats on the first socks. I hope they’re the first of many!
$18 for that Silky Wool!!!???!!!! WHAT!?! I wish I could make that “Awooooga” noise where my eyes pop in and out like the cartoons.
Oh, yeah, the socks are cute too.
The socks are awesome!! What a great first pair. You’re hooked now huh? After reading your post I had to go check out the cutaway cardi. Which I promptly purchased. Great pattern! I have yarn in that shade of brown that has been looking for a project too.
