Great response to Socktoberfest 2005–thanks! You can join the knitalong anytime this month, and I will consider any socks started in the month of October (even if you finish them later) as part of this knitalong.

I will add your name to the list, and make periodic updates in my own blog posts. From there, it is up to you to go click on their links and see what the other knitters are doing. In your posts about Socktoberfest, I encourage you to talk about the yarns you are using for your socks, your opinions on how it is knitting up, the patterns you are using or writing, any modifications you have made, and what techniques you like to use when knitting socks (Magic Loop? DPNs? Two circs?)

Also, feel free to showcase socks you have made in the past (even those of you who are not signed up for Socktober can do this! Look at Sockbug's! ). Show us how they are wearing, and what you would do different if you made them again.

Socktoberfest 2005 is a celebration of socks–so flaunt them!

I am still looking for a button for our group (no one has sent one!). Send me an email with the .jpg of .gif, and I will put them here for others to vote on.

So, here is my chance to flaunt what I've got on the sock front!

I bought some new shoes last night. Two criteria for the new shoes: 1) comfortable 2) must look good with handknit socks.

I succeeded on both points with these babies!

Birkenstock Maryjane clogs (on sale at Ross!) I think I am going to wear them everyday. Now I need more socks to wear them with… (of course, I have store bought socks, but as you all know, they are not the same!) Socks also displayed for the Quiddity contest.

So, during the episode of Lost last night, I was swifting and winding my sock yarns… Koigu, Tess, and KnitPicks!

I couldn't keep my paws off the new Tess yarns that Heather picked up at Stitches… so, I started my next pair of socks: Miriam's free Razor Shell pattern.

One word: AMAZING!

Mind you, it will need a little blocking, but this lace pattern is very easy to memorize, and I did this in about 45 minutes. It is knitting up very quickly for size 1 needles. Miriam used KnitPicks yarn to knit her samples, and they look great too, but I have to say, I love the look and texture of this Tess yarn. I am definitely getting some more of this at MD S&W next May.

Speaking of yarn, Heather of All Things Heather dared me to "flash my stash". I am a little hesitant… one because this means that I will actually have to gather most of it into one central location, and because I don't like to show my penchant for rampant yarn consumerism. I swear, I am only like this with yarn… and shoes. I think that is it… (Erin and Lisa pointed out that I am also like this about books and scarves. Okay, they are right–kind of. I buy a ton of stuff second hand!) I am not sure I should talk so much about this anymore–people are calling me out!

So, here is most of it. More upstairs, but you can't see that because it is upstairs.

In some cases, there are double layers. It is bad. I have about 5 or 6 garment projects in there, as well as some stashbusting projects in my head. I am really planning to focus on stashbusting for quite awhile. My last purchase of yarn, for Kris's ribbed sweater, will be my last purchase for a long while. Of course, yarn is often given to me for the holidays, but gifts don't count… right?

A big thanks to Julie for sending me this lovely origami crane. With the luck that it brought, I knit 4 more inches on my Klaralund!

All I can say is WOW! My stash fits into a yaffa block and maybe a plastic bag. I no longer feel I have the right to call it a stash.

  2. heather

holy moley girl..what a stash. Can I come live wtih you! :)

  3. Karma

Lolly, I like your new shoes! They fit the comfy + handknit socks bill perfectly. :)

  4. caitlyn

When I first looked at the photos (before actually reading the post), I thought you were showing pics of a yarn store. LOL =) What a stash! And it looks so pretty!

  5. Miriam

I’m glad you like the pattern! The cuff was so fun on mine! So mindless, except for that yarn over at the end of the needle. :) That Tess yarn does look yummy though.

  6. Baby Sarah

    Hey Lolly Pants,
Look at you and your yarn. You funny girl. It looks like everything is going well for you. I hope the blog is a true testament of that! I am ready for a break and am hoping to spend some time with you this coming week. I love you so much. Do let me hear from you sometime soon:)

  7. kim

Love the clogs — adorable!!! I want to find some cute shoes with the same criteria — that they make the SOCKS look good.

  9. yahaira

umm ok so you totally beat me in the stash count! I love how organized your stash is, it’s your own little yarn store.

The new socks look great. Cant wait to start my own tess socks, just have to decide on a pattern

  10. Liz

Must.Find.Those.Shoes!!!! I simply must. What is this ‘Ross’ you speak of?

Cute socks! GREAT STASH! Happy Socking!

PS. I emailed you my submission for a button. :)

  11. kimberly

Those shoes are great. I bought open shoes like that when I was in the States for the same purpose-to show off hand-knit socks. Too funny. I also have size 10 monster feet and those kinds of shoes are perfect-I’m not into pain. I of course, live in Germany and have a Birkenstock store right around the corner, so I think I’ll be checking to see if they carry your shoes. I love them.
    Tscüß!!

  12. Liz

I love the shoes. But then, I love all things Mary Jane. Your socks look great with them.
And, wow! Look at that stash!

  13. Agnes

I love the orangey yarns on the right of the picture … so lovely colours! I’ll join the Socktoberfest if I can manage to start a pair in October … hoping the sock muse will come visit me soon.

  14. tacha

That is quite a stash. Stash busting shouldn’t be too much of a problem as there is some really nice yarn there!

  15. Julie

Nice clogs! and I’m glad to see my little crane made it :)

  16. froggy

fantastic socks and i must find those shoes!

Fab new shoes, they look comfy and show off your socks brilliantly. Oh, I am so going to have to take the plunge and try to knit a pair….

  18. Amy

  19. Lisa

I LOVE those shoes, and the fact that they’re Birks makes me love them even more. Oh I must have them!

And you’ve convinced me, I must sign up for Socktoberfest! I think I may even try the Razor Shell pattern. Darn you!

So you’re telling me, you’re not like that with books? Teehee I think you are! I’m the same way, yarn, books and shoes. Sigh. My weaknesses.

  20. Mom

Can’t wait to see the new shoes “in person”. Oh! So cute!…and the socks are just the perverbial “icing on the cake”! I’ve got to go to Ross sometime.

  21. Chrissie

Love the yellow/gold sock yarn – it makes me think of leaves turning and apple cider. Have a good weekend, L!

  22. Libby

Green with shoe envy. Love ‘em.

Your next sock looks like they’ll be another pair of beauties.

  23. Erin

Wouldn’t you say you’re also a rampant consumer with scarves as well!? I’ve seen you’re collection (or at least what you’ve shown us on your blog! Ha! It’s ok, everyone’s gotta have something that they love right?

Great start to those socks. They’re going to be fabulous!

  24. Rebecca

I love the shoes! Very cute. Nice looking stash! I too get a little weirded out when people realize how much yarn and fiber I have.

  25. Sarah

    Those shoes look SO comfortable!

I am loving the progress pictures on your Klaralund — it makes me wish the weather would finally cool off so that I can wear mine again! I forgot how much I loved the colorway until you started posting it. :-)

  30. Denise

Ok.. are you sure that is your stash and not a shot in a yarn shop? E gads!
There is no way I could have my yarn out like that anywhere in this house even if I put up shelves in the closet!

  33. Jenna

Oooh, love the pinky pink sock yarn, it will look great in that razor shell pattern. I may need to try it out. Yu’re really tempting me to cast on a pair right now when I’m not sure that I should…

I love those shoes, too! So cute! I was actually looking for a new pair that I can show off my handmade sockers with.

No more yarn consumerizm for you! :)

  34. Annette

Great shoes for great socks! I like your stash display. I’ll be posting pics of my stash next week after the great Columbus Day Reorg I’ve got planned.

  35. margene

You should take the picture of your socks on the side bar and make it into a button for Socktober. They are a perfect fall color and I like the way the picture shows off your socks.

  36. Jenn

    Hey..sign me up for Socktoberfest.

    I love the new shoes!

  37. LisaB

Ooh your new shoes are so cute! And they look fantabulous with your knit socks. Great combo!

  38. Jeanie

Hey Lolly! Okay, I’m totally in for the Socktoberfest and I’m pretty sure I can say the same for my (blogless) friend Cheryl! I’ll try to send pics of her sock progress though and post her progress on my blog as well. I love love love the razor shell pattern and can definitely see it on my “to-do” list! And I’m sorry Lolly, but I’m afraid my stash is so big I can’t bare to flash it. It’s embarassing. Ya know… I’m working on Klarlund too! Did I already mention this? Anyway…. It’s one of WIP’s that I need to convert to an FO soon! Thanks for sponsoring the Socktoberfest. I’ll see if I can come up with a button for ya as soon as I get a sec!

  39. carole

grrl, you rock my socks! well.. if I had any handknit socks, that is! One of these days, I’ll finish that first pair!!

  40. chris

Holy cow, look at your stash!! You’ve got more than some of our local LYSs!! :) That Tess yarn looks fabulous, as do your new socks! They look so warm and comfy. I like that Razor Shell pattern, too. BTW, I emailed ya in case you were wondering who that mail was from. :)

  41. melissa

wow!!! now that is a stash. i don’t feel so bad about mine anymore! :D

  42. Becky

Look at all that STASH. Can I come over and play?

P.S. New shoes are so cute. You should be the “It” girl for Birkenstocks.

  43. emy

Looks like your stash is up to mark! Now if anyone says I have a stash, I’ll show them yours :P

  44. keohinani

HOLY MOTHER OF … … ??? what words am i looking for?!?!?! i hate when that happens. but that is one awesome stash. i’ve been looking for yarn storage options…where do you find those cubbie hole shelves? i can’t seem to find any, unless i have to build my own… :( that razor shell pattern is awesome! but man, if i had a stash like that……………………………………….there i go daydreaming. wow. absolutely WOW.

  45. Jessica

I LOVE the shoes and sock pics! As someone who just ordered a buttload of new shoes in search of something comfortable, I have to tell you I’m totally jealous. Why didn’t I find those! I’ve been looking for Maryjanes forever.

As for the stash, trust me. I’ve seen worse. But you’ve definitely got a good one going there! :) And gift yarn definitely does NOT count!

  46. carola

I’m in for the Socktoberfest! Sorry that I needed a trigger. It’s of course a must-do. Your new shows are fantastic. They would be so appropriate for my knitting, displaying the usually nice heel but hiding the sometimes ..ahem.. not so perfect toe. Enjoy them!
I really like the colours of your Trekking socks and the Klaralund. Such a nice combination, stripes in a subtle colour but somehow greyish.. very elegant.

  47. claudia

    Pink Opal socks! Nice.

  48. Cathy

I love the Klaralund colors you chose – GORGEOUS! The new Birk’s are great looking – I could get away with those at work myself :)
I feel some shopping coming on! As far as the stash goes, I, who live in a glass house, will be throwing no stones! ;)

    Happy Knitting,
    Cathy

  49. Angela

I’d like to sign up for Socktober fest, too!

  50. Jennifer

Lauren – I love the socks and Socktoberfest idea. Ingenious! Please add my name. I also love the Birkenstocks. I just bought a similar pair of Keen Saratogas – http://www.keenfootwear.com/women/saratoga.html – very similar to yours. I bought them for the express purpose of showing off socks and being comfortable. Great minds think alike. Happy knitting.
