The trees are at their autumnal peak right now. It is breathtaking. These pictures don’t even capture the beauty… but they do show the colors. I snapped both of these pics on the walk from the train station to my class yesterday afternoon. Only a few more days of beauty till the leaves are gone.
It is peak season in other places too… like school. I have never had so much homework in my life… and I have been in school for a long time. I literally read all weekend… like woke up early and stayed up late and only stopped to eat meals and to go to the bathroom. I finished that book, and promptly started on the next. (How come all books can’t be read as quickly as Harry Potter?)
Second verse–same as the first.
I guess the one good thing about it was that I felt like a time traveler–one minute I was in 18th-century Latin America, and the next I was in 20th-century Bohemia.

This is my “Is this really worth it?” face.
Still trying to figure that one out… I hope all of this work will be worth it. If it is not, think of all of the knitting time I missed. Seriously, it pains me to think that I have not had the chance to even pick up the needles since the plane ride home from Hawaii… and that was nearly two weeks ago.
Thanks for listening… I don’t mean to be such a downer. C’est la vie.
Although I have not picked up the needles in two weeks, these girls keeping on rocking out the socks! A few more Socktoberfest updates come in every few days… don’t forget to email me if you have a finished pair and want to share.
- Erica finished a pair of gift socks and hid a picture of them in her 10.29 blog entry!
- Wendy finished her two socks knit at once. She is never going back to the one by one method now!
- Anne finished a gift pair too–they are so pretty she needs some for herself too!
- Stacey finished up a pair of socks in October and is still not quite a big fan of sock knitting–they are cute nonetheless!
- Chrissie finished a great pair of stripey socks, and don’t forget to scroll down to see the Christmas stocking too!
- Tam is knitting away–check out her lovely finished pairs–all three of them!
- Julia’s new socks make her a better mommy, no question about that.
- Chris entertains us with her lovely lacey socks and the story of her linguistics exam!
Don’t miss April’s great play-by-play tutorial on knitting two socks at the same time. Go check it out, you might learn something!
Jessica started a blog similar to the Give A Little for Hurricane Katrina relief. This blog counts the dollars sent by knitbloggers to the Pakistan earthquake relief. Please help in any way you can. This disaster is getting very little attention in the media, but the problems are only getting worse as the winter comes to the Himalayas.

Hang in there girl, it will be worth it. Once upon a time, in my b.c. life (b.c.=before children), I too wanted to be an archivist, and studied for many years. The hope is still there, but has to be shelved (ha!) until the kids are a little older. So I really enjoy reading about your studies. It is so great that you share all your ups and downs, but in the end you will be better for it. Believe me, although it is hard, knitting can wait. What you are doing now, going to school and getting your degree(s) while you are still young, it will be much easier than waiting-even for a few years. It is easy to keep putting it off for another day, but a lot of times that day never comes. Soon you will have a career that you enjoy, and everything will fall into place for you. If you do ever decide to have children one day, you will wonder what you did with all that ‘free’ time!
In the here and now, just take it one day at a time. You have a fantastic and loving husband, a supporting family, and live in a beautiful city. And, not to mention, gorgeous skin! That self portrait is lovely. Trees are pretty too!
Take care and be good to yourself, and I hope you can sneak in a little knitting soon. I always feel like a part of me is missing when I am not able to knit!!
It is hard when you get into the high gear school season, it does bring up a lot fo doubts about the worthwhileness of schoooling. I know I had lots of times during my undergrad where I was exhausted and wondered why I was doing these things that felt like they had no relevence to the real world. Just get through and think how proud you’ll be when this semester’s done – and how much knitting time you’ll have! I know you must miss the sticks though, it’s sad when they’re not there.
I hope you got the email I sent yesturday. Take care and smooches, lady.
Does it make you feel any better to hear that it’s that time of year? And that I don’t know a single grad student, in any field, who doesn’t feel this way at least twice a month? It’s been four years and I still wonder if it’s worth it… I’ll tell you what, though — I couldn’t survive it without knitting. Even if I don’t get to it as much as I would like, I’m so grateful to have a hobby that is relaxing AND productive, at times when I feel like I’m neither.
Hang in there! Not too much longer until winter break.
Hang in there a bit longer, it will all be over soon. And yes, it is all worth it…every single minute of it. Just think about it in this way…if you succeed in your studies, you may get a big job which will give you lots of $$ then you can retire early and knit to your heart’s content.
Huggs Lolly…things will slow down soon
…smile, we are all cheering you on
.
Hang in there Lolly! Just about this time during my last year in grad school, and also the month or two before I graduated, I felt like this too. Do I *really* want to do this? (it’s a good thing I didn’t knit then, because I’d be in trouble) But I graduated and it felt good to have such an accomplishment under my belt. Wish I was doing more work in my field, but that’s another story! Keep your head up!
I’m really enjoying your self-portrait series — is it related to your degree, or just for fun? Keep up the hard work in school but make sure to take a few breaks of else you’ll go insane. When I was studying for the bar I went with something completely mindless: The Ashlee Simpson Show. But hey, a few rows of stockinette might do the trick, too! (And just think, after all this studying you get an awesome winter break that us working stiffs would kill for!)
I believe in you Lauren! You have years of knitting ahead of you. It can wait.
Amy
I feel your pain! Unfortunately I can’t match your dedication. I teeter out at around 2 hours straight of reading. It makes me wonder how I used to read the whole day away as a kid. As much as I love my book history stuff, I can’t wait to read for fun again. But wait, I meant to be encouraging… I guess we’ll have to settle for commiseration.
I’ll pass on my brother’s new favorite quote, “Don’t worry, it’ll get done.”
love these self pics…and the tree pics too…awesome.
Hey, Lolly-Girl. I’ve been where you are (just a short year & a half ago!), & I promise you that it’s TOTALLY worth it. Just think of how much smarter you’re getting! And reaching the end & getting that piece of paper is such a great feeling.
Hang in there. I promise it will be over much sooner than you think!
Oh Lolly, hugs to you. Yes, it is absolutely worth it. I can only imagine how much the semester is cracking down on you right now, but your sense of accomplishment will be that much greater once it finally comes to an end. Grad school is definitely rough. I’m only taking one class and I’m swamped, so I can’t imagine how much MORE you must be. Whenever you get down, think of all the opportunities and doors that are going to open to you because of all your hard work and persistence. Not being able to knit would drive me batty, too. Maybe you could try the feet-holding-the- book-open-while-you-knit posture again.
We’re such loons- anything for a few rows! BTW, thanks for the info about the Pakistan relief site. You’re so right about the callous lack of media attention and the level of suffering there. Take good care of yourself and I’m sending you good thoughts so you can squeeze in a couple of rows!
I finished my socks too! I have to take pictures of them still, but one pair down – many more to go!
I’m starting another pair very soon!
You can do it Lolly! I know, it totally sucks when other obligations deprive you of your knitting time. Things seem really out of balance, since knitting really is a kind of therapy that becomes a comforting part of your daily routine. For me, no matter how bad my day at work is, I know I’ll be able to happily knit away on the 45-minute subway ride home. Anyway, from what you’ve said in your blog, the frustration and busy-ness you have to put up with now will be well worth it in the long haul. And it will definitely pass, so hang in there! And think of how wonderful it will feel to knit when your precious time returns!
lolly! it IS worth it!
(actually, i don’t know, but i want to be the cheerleader) —- education rocks! learning things rock! it’s positive!
i’m glad you enjoyed your hawaii vacation …. just think, the education has a light at the end of the tunnel.
and, … the knitting will wait for you
listen to all these people who post! why do we know it’s a gooooood thing?!
Lolly! It *is* worth it – you can do this! Sorry it’s so tough right now but the material at least looks very interesting.
Thanks for blogging about the earthquake blog – you have so many wonderful readers I know it will be a huge help! This is my favorite time of the year. Those tree pictures are stunning.
Best of luck with the studies!
Lolly – you hang in there! It is worth it. I don’t speak from personal experience of having gone through it. I speak from the perspective of wanting to be inspired to do so. You know time really does fly and in a year you will look back and wonder where the time went! Every other stitch I knit is now dedicated to you until you can knit again! That’s what knitting buddies are for!
I feel for you. This is my first semester out of school and I’m amazed at how much of my time was spent with school related things (mainly homework). Just remember this time will be over sooner than you know and how accomplished you will feel.
I know, I know! It sucks royally! But December 9 is SO close and then you’ll have a nice break until January. And next semester will be (at least slightly) easier. I can’t wait until Saturday. At least we can have a nice little booze and knit break then, if only for one day. Alright I’ve procrastinated enough. You have guilted me into writing MY paper now.
It will be worth it. You will do great. and soon you will have time to knit. Take care and hang in there, Lolly!
Oh gawd do I remember only too well what you are going through! I feel your pain! But it is sooo worth it! you can get through it and your needles will be happily waiting for you
.
Cheer up Lolly! I am sure all this reading will be worth it in the end… Grab some knitting when you can to relax. One day there will be more time for it.
It will totally be worth it Lolly! You’re going to look back at this post in a few years and wonder what you were even doubting for!
The trees look amazing. Glad you’ve got some beauty in your world!
Hello sweetheart. It will get better. You are probably so overwhelmed that you are considering things that you would never have considered. I know one thing for sure,… if you don’t finish, you WILL regret it. The double will increase your chances of doing what you want to do. Stay with it, Lol. Thanksgiving is almost here and in a short bit after that, Christmas. Both will be well-earned time off. I am so proud of you. Love you.
Hi Lolly, all that hard work, it is worth it. Keep chanting to yourself. Its worth it, because I’m worth it…
Keep smiling!!
keep the faith…next semester will be easier!
Doing an awesome job..
x/o
chin up, Lolly! It IS worth it – and what a dedicated student you are. Those sticks will be there for you when you put your note taking sticks down.
Hey Lolly! Hang in there with the studying. It WILL be worth it. It took me 6 years to get my BA which seemed like an eternity, and even though I didn’t knit at the time, there always seemed to be something else I’d rather do than STUDY! Ew.
Hang in there!
hey Lolly — you can do it, and it will be worth it. Here’s my only tip — don’t feel you have to read every word assigned to you. I don’t say that to be a slacker, as I did well in school, but always found that paying attention and taking great notes in class always did more for my end result than doing all of the assigned reading…. take a break and knit a bit. . .just make sure you go to class! that’s the knitbrarian way!
Ugg I have utmost sympathy…class has been kicking my butt lately…mostly with reading also. Ugg. lol
Hang in there! School is hard but you will be so proud of your accomplishments in the end. The knitting time will return, just you wait! Cheers-
Hey sweet Lolly! It WILL all be worth it…You can do it. Just hang in there girl : ) Maybe just sneek in a few rows of knitting, at least for some stress release!
oh, such lovely photos!
take a break from time to time. it will be worth it, i’m sure, but it never feels that way when you’re exhausted.
be sure to treat yourself once a day.
I´ve almost finished my last socktober sock.. I have really been busy the last weeks with work and have been to tired to knit on my during the evenings.. You can see the last sock on my blog!
About postcrossing: Yes I have been writing my blog address to those i´ve send postcard to.
Lolly, my best to you as you work on school stuff. It will be worth it and your knitting will be waiting.
gorgeous photographs! hope you get a few minutes to rest soon. hang in there, it sounds like it really is worth it. make fun time just as mandatory as studying, though!
love the colors! and like that – whoosh! – they’re all down. isn’t nature incredible.
Just think of all the knitting that awaits when the semester is over. Be strong! It’s worth it!
As I am finishing my school stuff up, I can say that it is totally worth it. You will be so proud of yourself when you get done. Just think of the end and how good it will feel to be done. I tried to take 10 to 15 minute knitting breaks and worked on a sock, just enough to try and give myself a mental mind break.
Have a great Thursday and the weekend is almost here!!
Oh, that’s sad that you haven’t had time to knit, but school is keeping you busy. At least the semester will soon be over, right? A 2-3 week chance for a break. This semester is tough and it’s sad that you haven’t had time to knit, but school is the most important thing right now. And yes, it will all be worth it. But it’s easy to have those doubts right about know when school is piling a bunch of stuff on top of you. Just hang in there, it will soon be over and then you’ll have a chance to breathe. Take care of yourself.
Hang in there! I can remember being in Grad School and wondering if I’d ever do anything other than study again. It’s all worth it in the long run, and still tough in the moment. Hope you can find some time for yourself soon
Wow, nice leaves.
Thanks for the comment on my blog about my socks. I have been sock-inspired! I am on my 3rd pair, well…3rd ever pair of my life, so I am quite proud. Thanks again…don’t despair…you will get back to knitting soon.
lovely fall leaves! this is one of my favorite times of year!
hang in there with the school work! that’s one thing when i was in school – knitting was my homework (my friends were so jealous)! but then again, i had to deal w/ crazy profs telling me socks were bad.
Good luck to you with all of your reading! I can totally sympathize as I’m starting to feel swamped by the GIANT BOOKS myself
It will definitely be worth it when all us students can later apply our brain power to intensive knitting sessions and use yarny goodness to save the world!
The trees are amazing. Every where I turn there are beautiful trees.
Study hard…knit later.
I feel your pain. Luckily, this will all be over soon and we can knit happily ever after.
I finished my Socktoberfest socks (http://crazylanea.typepad.com/). Thanks for running the knit-along–it was fun to see so many socks in progress.
Lolly, my fellow Scorpio, I’m sure it will be worth it. You love it, or you wouldn’t be doing it, and that alone makes it more worth while than doing something you don’t enjoy.
I think it really IS that time of year…the time of year when school takes over! I don’t know about you, but I’m REALLY looking forward to Thanksgiving/Christmas breaks!
School has taken over my world, too, as evidenced by the fact that I’m a week late on this post. I feel your pain! I am in the downhill stretch of my thesis and worried that I won’t get enough participants to graduate, stress.ful! But, in the big scheme of things, I will graduate, just maybe not this semester. And, I really, really hope it will be worth it someday! Here’s hoping yours will be, too!
