Stanley Cup Block Party

Published by lolly at 8:10 am under Carla Pullover, Stashbusting

Just as Chris Pronger scored the first Edmonton goal – 14 seconds into the game – I was binding off the front of my Carla pullover. And during the first intermission, I got the block party started!

I will sew her up tonight, complete the sleeve detail, and show her off tomorrow!

Of course, with 2 hours of hockey game left, I needed something else to knit. I could have worked on one of the WIPs, but, instead, I started on a new blue…

This “Fuzzy Wuzzy” mohair is from Dancing Leaf Farm, born and raised here in Maryland. My friend, Donna, gave this beautiful “True Blue” colorway for my birthday last year. It has a TON of yardage, much more than this pattern calls for. If you look close enough, you can see that it is turning my needles blue! I had a feeling this might happen, so I chose my cheapy Ebay needles. It dyed my fingers too, so after knitting up, it will need a good rinsing until the water is clear. It may fade the yarn – it is a little bright, eh?

Last year, I worked a trade with Jacqueline. I admired her beautiful mohair camisole, and she admired a teapot only sold in the US, so the trade was born! She sent me the Jo Sharp Contemporary Knitting Two Collection book, and I found the Adagio Teapot she wanted. So, I am finally making that little mohair cami I admired!

Such a simple pattern – infinitely wearable in every season. I love the muted colors of the Jo Sharp mohair yarn, but I am committed to using up some stash yarns this summer, so I hope that this camisole turns out well with this variegated mohair.

I was ready to see the Stanley Cup awarded to the Hurricanes last night. I just had a feeling that they could pull through. Neither of the teams in the finals are “my” team, but I do enjoy watching good hockey, and this series has been incredible! Great stories and great plays. My sister Sarah goes to college just outside of Raleigh, North Carolina, so I hope to catch one of their fall games when I go down to visit her.

On Saturday night, Kris and I will be watching Game Six of the finals – counting down till the Cup is awarded. Whether it goes to the Oilers or the ‘Canes, I will have my knitting in one hand, and my tissue in the other… I always tear up when they skate around with the trophy!

Wow! The clara pullover realy opened up. It looks great.

Look forward to seeing the pullover pieced together! The lace pattern look beautiful.

I love the blue varigated mohair! It looks like it’ll be perfect for that pattern — a different take on it, yes, but it’ll add some “zing” to the design. Very pretty!

  3. Amyon 15 Jun 2006 at 8:53 am

Your pullover is great! Its amazing what a good blocking can do. I should try that with my one and only wearable garment (that don’t look so wearable on ME) that I knit last summer. I love the mohair cami, too! You have such a good eye for patterns.
Good luck to the ‘Canes. My company’s headquarters are about three miles away from their stadium, so I, too, am going to try to catch a game next year while I’m down there.

There is NOTHING like the Stanley Cup. Just the words “The Cup is IN the building” are enough to send shivers down my spine. I was lucky enough to be there when the Devil’s won their last cup and it was one of the most thrilling nights of my life. Luckily my husband was there with me. Playoff Hockey is THE BEST! (Puts that silly World Cup to shame. SO EXCITING!)

  5. Karenon 15 Jun 2006 at 9:00 am

Oooh, that cami will be wonderful. I love mohair, but can’t wear it . . . the little hairs get under my contact lenses (ouch!!). I can’t wait to see the finished pullover!!!

  6. Erinon 15 Jun 2006 at 9:11 am

I can’t wait to see the pullover when it’s all put together. I love that lace pattern. The mohair cami is incredible. I love the color and it’s such a versatile pattern.

  7. Liz K.on 15 Jun 2006 at 9:11 am

Can you tell me a little more about the mohair? I have some BLUE Outback mohair that is pretty bulky. I have a sweater’s worth, but I made a sweater out of it and looked like a big ole hair bear. I totally chose the wrong pattern for it. Is your mohair pretty bulky, or is it more like a kidsilk or soft kid type? I am just at a loss for what to do with this stuff!

  8. heatheron 15 Jun 2006 at 9:16 am

    can’t wait to see!

    the blue is amazing!!

  9. Danaon 15 Jun 2006 at 9:18 am

woo hoo! look at you go on your carla. can’t wait to see the finished product. also – that cami will look great in the variegated mohair – hope it doesn’t fade too much, though. and on a hockey note – i got to see the stanley cup closeup once – it’s pretty cool! so much history. if i didn’t give away all the photos to my hockey fan friends at the time, maybe i can post one or something. anyway, enjoy!

  10. jesson 15 Jun 2006 at 9:22 am

woohoo, I was knitting and watching the game last night too, of course, crazy hockey fanatic me (we even went to see the Caps AHL team play on Saturday — they’re in the AHL finals, and up 3 games to 2 now! Go baby Caps!). But er — go Oil! Underdogs and all! There is nothing like playoff hockey! :)

I cannot wait to see your Carla assembled! :)

  11. Staceyon 15 Jun 2006 at 9:27 am

I can’t wait to see Carla all done! That blue mohair is FAB!!!!! I love the bright color! That is another book I have been looking for (you seem to put them up on your blog as I think about them!) – That cami will go great over another tank, short or long sleeve shirts – all seasons! Go stashbuster!

  12. Teresaon 15 Jun 2006 at 9:44 am

Carla is gorgeous, and that color is going to look so pretty on you! The cami is a pretty one too-no matter what color blue it turns out!;-)

I am not one for hockey, but Adam and Veronica love it. Shameful I know, considering I only live a few hours away from “Hockey Town”. In the off season the Wings practice in Traverse City (close to where Adam grew up), and it is cool because you can watch them practice, and it is a little more personal than an actual game. I try so hard to enjoy the game, but alas, I am still a baseball girl at heart!

    Take care sweetie!

It’s nice to see an American so into hockey. I just moved back to my hometown of Calgary (from Toronto) and while I’m not as hockey nutso as my family, I do enjoy the playoffs. And you’re right — it’s great knitting time! Go Oilers! (I thought they were doomed, but they’re putting up a good fight — I almost cried after that OT goal last night!)

  14. Beakon 15 Jun 2006 at 9:51 am

I keep a few needles in reserve for blue…I knit with it all the time, and it seems to be the most likely to bleed.

    The pullover looks great.

  15. Claudiaon 15 Jun 2006 at 9:54 am

Oh my goodness, all that blocking looks so complex!!! Oy oy oy! Beautiful cami! I can’t wait to see it finished!!!!

  16. Jenniferon 15 Jun 2006 at 9:59 am

Oooo, a completed Carla! Must see the FO!

I think the mohair will make a lovely cami! Maybe if you rinsed the FO with a diluted vinegar mixture you could set the color?

  17. gray la granon 15 Jun 2006 at 10:07 am

i can’t wait to see carla! does “tomorrow” mean shortly after midnight tonight?

  18. Lauraon 15 Jun 2006 at 10:11 am

I am ready to see Carla done! I have been secretly admiring it while you’ve been knitting it up.

I think that the cami will be lovely in the variegated too!

  19. Lyndaon 15 Jun 2006 at 10:13 am

Oooooh, that mohair looks so soft! Everyone will want to be hugging you when you wear that!

  20. krison 15 Jun 2006 at 10:24 am

ahh carla – so beautiful! can’t wait to see it finished up! and don’t do what i did to mine: wash it on a hot cycle and completely wreck it :-(

i love the little mohair vest and have the yarn and pattern for it in my stash. that jacqueline sure comes in handy!

  21. gleekon 15 Jun 2006 at 10:27 am

ah, too bad that book is out of print! i could probably find it on ebay if i were patient enough :) that mohair vest is gonna look so pretty! funny that it’s dyeing your hands blue.. something that i fear from denim yarn!

  22. Sandyon 15 Jun 2006 at 10:31 am

Spoken like a true hockey fan! I always tear up too, but when Pittsburgh won in ‘91, we were crying to beat the band! (DH is from da ‘burgh).

    Everything is looking so beautiful.

  23. Elainaon 15 Jun 2006 at 10:36 am

I am always thrilled to see your finished and in progress knits, so beautiful. You work so fast! =)

From someone who lives in Edmonton, there isn’t a playoff game where you don’t hear honking in the streets everytime the Oilers score a goal — even in the most quiet cul-de-sac. And that OT goal last night? You can hear the excited screaming and yelling in my house and the rest of the neighborhood!

  24. Debbyon 15 Jun 2006 at 10:43 am

That mohair is just gorgeous! And I can’t wait to see your finished pullover. All that wonderful blue!

What is the name of the blocking board kit that you have? I think I will need one for my lace project this summer, and I’d appreciate your recommendation.

  25. sydneyon 15 Jun 2006 at 10:53 am

Carla is looking good. I’m anxious to see how it looks once it’s put together. The camisole is going to be nice too.

  26. eunnyon 15 Jun 2006 at 11:01 am

Whoa, Carla went fast! Can’t wait to see you in it.

  27. Kathyon 15 Jun 2006 at 11:05 am

I also love that JS Cami – and that blue yarn is amazing, whether or not it’s turning everything else blue along with it.

I really can’t wait to see Carla all done! Pictures, pictures!

  28. BArbon 15 Jun 2006 at 11:23 am

Wow your needles are blazing! Love all the blues!

  29. jodion 15 Jun 2006 at 11:33 am

I will totally cry if Edmonton wins. And I swear I’ll do my best not to rub it in to Sandy (who’s from Charlotte, and clearly not on my team here).

And, I want a Carla now! I love that stitch. I don’t love how freaking expensive Rowan is here, though. Bah.

  30. Dorothy Bon 15 Jun 2006 at 11:57 am

Go Oilers!! I hope they win not just because I am Canadian, but because Chris Pronger’s home town is an hour’s drive from where I live and I want to see the Stanley Cup up close and personal!!!
    GO OILER’S!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Your Carla looks great!

  31. jessica~on 15 Jun 2006 at 12:14 pm

Wow your sweater looks great! Can’t wait to see it all seamed up. :)
I’m rooting for the Oilers because Samsonov is on that team and I feel like he got screwed over by the Boston Bruins and I’d like to seem him win.

  32. chooiwahon 15 Jun 2006 at 12:14 pm

You are a quick knitter!! The blue mohair look so beautiful, I been looking for that mohair cami as well.

  33. Nonnahson 15 Jun 2006 at 12:21 pm

I love that cami. It’s on my to-do list…eventually! And Carla looks great- can’t wait to see her all put together!

  34. allisonon 15 Jun 2006 at 12:24 pm

You make this canuck very proud with all this Cup talk!! I love it!! There’s something special about playoff knitting isn’t there? Eventhough my Habs got knocked out by the Canes in the first round, I’m strangely still watching…Go Oilers! (Love the cami BTW!)

  35. caroleon 15 Jun 2006 at 12:35 pm

    Love that mohair cami!!

What kind of blocking board is that?

  36. kelpon 15 Jun 2006 at 2:20 pm

Love the color of your Carla. Holy cow, you knit it up really quickly!

  37. Mouseon 15 Jun 2006 at 2:24 pm

The mohair cami looks so soft and the blue you are using is such gorgeous colors! I can’t wait to see your finished Carla pictures!!

  38. Jennaon 15 Jun 2006 at 2:40 pm

Crying for the Stanley cup, so cute :) I LOVE the way the stitch pattern looks on Carla, it’s so cool. I’m sure you’ll look divine in it. When you wear that cami, be sure that the dye doesn’t come off on your clothes! It looks so soft, it will make for a lovely wardrobe piece.

  39. Monion 15 Jun 2006 at 4:56 pm

how exciting! can’t wait to see your carla pullover! I want to be done with my sweater :( . It’s slow going. The cami is simply adorable! too bad about the dye, though.

  40. Cathion 15 Jun 2006 at 5:13 pm

I love Carla- I’ve been toying with getting some of the Tape from Elann and making one too. Can’t wait to see yours!

  41. Amyon 15 Jun 2006 at 5:24 pm

I’ve admired that cami as well. Cute and versatile.

  42. Amyon 15 Jun 2006 at 7:37 pm

The sweater pieces look great – can’t wait to see it all sewn up!

  43. Lauraon 15 Jun 2006 at 8:12 pm

So excited to see Carla! She looks great on the blocking board!

I remember now seeing that Jo Sharp camisole in an ad in IK, probably, and thinking it was too cute. May have to seek out the pattern. You are very good at adding to my to-knit list. :)

  44. Lizon 15 Jun 2006 at 8:24 pm

Wow, what a gorgeous blue mohair! I can’t wait to see the camisole finished. Carla is look great too.

  45. Kellyon 15 Jun 2006 at 8:35 pm

Love the camisole and now have fingers and needles that go great with this months color!

  46. Shellon 15 Jun 2006 at 8:45 pm

Looking forward to seeing Carla finished. The cami looks good so far.

  47. catherineon 15 Jun 2006 at 9:26 pm

those are some very beautiful blues! love the mohair!

  48. Sueon 15 Jun 2006 at 9:42 pm

I cannot wait to see that Carla pullover. It looks so nice already. I started the Jo Sharp mohair singlet top too for my sister, but alas it is still sitting in my WIP basket. I also bought some cheap yarn with the same texture in a blue to start one for me, but it will have to wait. The color of your blue is gorgeous, and it suits your coloring.

  49. melissaon 15 Jun 2006 at 10:36 pm

hockey and knitting just go hand in hand!

i was so ready to see Brind’Amour skating around with the cup last night. i was screaming at the tv when edmonton scored that overtime goal. so unfair! i’m rooting for the canes cause Brind’Amour used to be one of my favorite players on the Flyers. Plus Recchi used to be a Flyer in the good old days too. I can’t think of two more deserving players.

It’s almost a conflict of interest though, cause the coach of the Oilers also used to be one of my favorite players on the Flyers. I mean, dude, how could you not like the last guy in the NHL that was crazy enough not to wear a helmet! McTavish was nuts!

    Go Canes!

  50. Chrison 15 Jun 2006 at 11:27 pm

Oh, I’m looking forward to seeing the finished Carla! And I hope that new blue doesn’t fade too much – it’s stunning as is.

  51. LisaBon 16 Jun 2006 at 12:33 am

Ooh did you see the game up in Edmonton, where O Canada was being sung by the entire stadium? That was so inspiring – loved it.
This household is rooting for the Hurricanes. Between the Stanley Cup and World Cup – I haven’t seen much of my husband!
I love how Carla looks – all blocked out and pretty. Can’t wait to see it on!

  52. jacquelineon 16 Jun 2006 at 3:28 am

i am so glad you are making the jo sharp vest….and the colour you have chosen is magnificent.

do you realise it is about 15 months since we did that trade…in fact my wonderful adagio teapot has been used and used so much that it has just gone to that great teashop in the sky. (i noticed a few black mould bits growing from the overuse! blech!!) i have replaced it with a not so nice – but quite servicable locally produced model. i can’t tell you how many cups of tea i had from it – and how many times people commented on it….and it always reminded me of you! seriously one of the best trades i have been in.

  53. Jessicaon 16 Jun 2006 at 5:52 am

Such pretty blue stuff! I’m glad I’m not the only one that gets all emotional when the cup gets skated (unless of course we are talking about 1999… but that was a very different emotion!).

  54. Momon 16 Jun 2006 at 8:02 am

Lovely camisole. It will look lovely on you, my lil’ blue-eyed Lol’! Finished my felted tote that you gave me for Mother’s Day. Come see and consult.
    XXOO

  55. Saunon 16 Jun 2006 at 8:38 am

I can’t wait to see the Carla pullover all put together. You are doing well on you SOS. That cami is so cute. I’ve admired that pattern a few times but I just can’t bring myself to buy the book for just one pattern.

  56. Gracieon 16 Jun 2006 at 11:31 am

I’m excited to see the pullover (along with everyone else!), it looks so great!

  57. LeAnneon 16 Jun 2006 at 12:30 pm

I love your Carla. I found some bright orange Cotton Tape for 50% off, but ended up not buying it, as orange is just not “me”. I think your cami pattern is. so. cute!!!! I may have to buy that book.

  58. The Purloined Letteron 16 Jun 2006 at 1:48 pm

Beautiful sweater. I have such blocking-board envy!

  59. Bossygirlon 16 Jun 2006 at 2:42 pm

You are one speedy knitter chick!!! I’m so impressed. The cami you have planned looks adorable.

  60. Bonne Marieon 16 Jun 2006 at 5:11 pm

    I can’t wait to see that pullover – it’s Blue, it’s lacy, it’s Y-O-U!

  61. kukaon 19 Jun 2006 at 9:28 am

oooh, i’m making that cami too!!!

  62. pinkyon 23 Jun 2006 at 9:13 pm

Lolly, if you come to town next season for a game, drop me a line and we can meet up! What could be better than knitting friends and hockey?? We might even be able to drag along some other Triangle knitbloggers.

Your blue stuff this month is so beautiful! Too bad June is coming to an end.
