Wound Up and (a little) Giddy

Published by lolly at 9:42 pm under Project Spectrum, Socks, Trekking XXL 108

I don't know why it did not occur to me sooner… but the reason socks take me so long to complete? Simply said, I have a very long foot.

TrekkingXXL 108 Sock 1 complete .. it only took me a month!
Alternate View

I started this lovely sock at the beach last month - remember the whole "dropping the needle in the water" incident? I think that the pattern - the Sleeping Sock from Knitting Vintage Socks - is a good fit for this unique yarn. The original pattern does not have a heel, however, so I improvised and added a classic Dutch heel (described in the same book).

Now I just need to outfit that other foot!

These socks were hold overs from June's Project Spectrum blue theme - I started them late in the month, and it took me this long to complete one. Can I hope for a faster second sock? I had a lovely purple sock yarn for this month, but never got to it… so my mind has already shifted to my sock plans for next month - the ones I have been waiting for throughout the whole of Project Spectrum!

Sure, there are four days left in July, and I am still relishing in the purples and violets around my world, but I have to say that I am excited to start on these… the Lace Knee-Highs from Interweave Knits Winter 2004.

So, I didn't waste any time…

Umbrella Swift Action!

Winding Away

All balled up and ready to go!

After many months of beautiful colorful creations, it is hard to believe that we only have one more month left in Project Spectrum! The months have flown by, and I have seen so many beautiful projects (on the blogs, and on the Flickr Project Spectrum group!) I had some response to a Project Spectrum Clean Sweep, and I think it will be a great way to "shift gears" and finish up those lingering color projects from all of the previous months. So, please join us in September with all of your leftover color projects, and we can have an FO Parade!

Lastly, a great big thanks to Amy Singer for featuring Project Spectrum in the Fall issue of Interweave Knits! Although I have not personally seen the column yet (and did not know a thing about it!), I heard from some very reliable sources that Amy mentioned our little color project and the colorful reverberations in the blogosphere!

Update: here it is!  Many thanks to Kimberli for sending this picture!

If you are here as a result of her column, you can learn more about Project Spectrum and its 1200+ participants here - and feel free to join us for our last month! Who knows… maybe Project Spectrum v. 2.0 is right around the corner? :)

“The Lolly Knitting Around Project Spectrum has been very visible on knitting (and other) blogs since it launched in March 2006. Lolly encourages crafters of every kind to focus on a different color each month in whatever way they choose be it knitting, quilting, beading - even photography. The 1141 chromatically coordinated blog postings are rich and tantalizing, and might help you see something new in your old stash.” Amy Singer, IK

Thanks for your compliments on Carla you inspired it by knitting your own and posting a link to the Cotton tape sale at Elann = ).

I saw the IK blurb today when I received my latest issue today in the mail. I was so happy to see Project Spectrum (and your name, of course) in there. I’m not 100% sure what I’m going to do after the final month of Project Spectrum. For so long now I’ve been planning what I knit based on the “rules” of PS. Now, I have to think for myself?!? I don’t know how I’ll cope ;-)

  3. Mintyfreshon 27 Jul 2006 at 10:41 pm

Wow, Lolly, a mention in Interweave? You’ve hit the Big Time, that’s for sure. Congrats! Just tonight my boyfriend and I were walking home from dinner and he said “whatever happened to the color thing you were doing?” (I lamented it being a purple month!)

  4. Jenniferon 27 Jul 2006 at 10:43 pm

Very beautiful socks and lovely yarn!

Congrats on the mention in Interweave! I know that I’ve learned a lot from being involved in Project Spectrum

  5. LisaBon 27 Jul 2006 at 10:55 pm

Congrats on the mention! Mine just came in the mail, I have to go look at it now!

  6. eyeleenon 27 Jul 2006 at 11:00 pm

Wow Lolly! Congrats on the Ik Blurb!

Great looking trekking sock. Love the color. Is that an Ikea catolog I see underneath it? LOL I’ve just placed the catalog in my knitting basket. (I need new shelves for my stash ;-)

  7. Tammanyon 27 Jul 2006 at 11:00 pm

I’m sorry I missed Project Spectrum. I am new to the “blogosphere.” I would love to see PS v. 2.0 in the future!

  8. Jennon 27 Jul 2006 at 11:03 pm

I am still puzzling over this: I finished a whole pink sweater in March. I did some peach beading in April. And then in May, I started one pair of socks…and it took me two months to finish them! What gives? I’m working on a purple sock and a gray sock, and I would absolutely love a Clean Sweep to do all the things that I didn’t get a chance to do!

I love your Trekking sock, the colorway is beautiful! Don’t feel badly about it taking a month, Trekking is so fine that it takes forever to work up. That’s what I keep telling myself about the purple sock, anyway!

  9. kellyon 27 Jul 2006 at 11:35 pm

Congrats on the Interweave press! The trekking sock looks fantastic. I hope there’s another project spectrum in the works! I’ve still got orange sock yarn that needs another go-round!

  10. melissaon 27 Jul 2006 at 11:48 pm

wow! congrats on the interweave shoutout! project spectrum was a really wonderful idea - so glad I could participate! I just wish I had been a bit less busy to be able to finish more projects! I had good intentions for orange, but green was the only finisher. oh well, maybe I’ll have better luck if there is a 2.0!

  11. Amandaon 27 Jul 2006 at 11:55 pm

I’m so glad I’m online again so I can read your blog again. I’m sorry I wasn’t in time for project spectrum but it’s great that it’s getting so much attention. PS Thanks for the card you sent last year!

  12. Dorothy Bon 28 Jul 2006 at 1:12 am

Congrats on the bit in Interweave!
I’m definitely interested in a Project Spectrum 2. My stash wasn’t big enough for this one, but if I knew when it was starting and what the colours were, … ;-)

  13. Suzieon 28 Jul 2006 at 1:25 am

Nice shout out in IK! Congrats! Nice work on wrangling project spectrum too!

  14. Barbon 28 Jul 2006 at 4:23 am

How exciting for you! I really have enjoyed Project Spectrum. Such a grreat idea and catchy name.
    Love you sock, too.

  15. Annarellaon 28 Jul 2006 at 7:11 am

Wow, well done on the press blurb!! So exciting!! So, is there going to be a second edition to Project Spectrum? :)

    xx

  16. lorindaon 28 Jul 2006 at 7:28 am

You were already big time before the mention in IK, Lolly, but it’s nice they are agreeing with us. :) Love the Trekking socks–the colorway and pattern look so nice together. And a Clean Sweep sounds great for me. I need to finish what I’ve started so I can do some more! Thanks for all your inspiration.

  17. carrie mon 28 Jul 2006 at 7:49 am

ok, you are SO BIG TIME now. it’s wonderful that your project has appealed to so many people, and i’m so impressed!

  18. Annon 28 Jul 2006 at 8:54 am

First: It cracks me up that you shot your sock over the Ikea catalog… if only because it’s been a fixture on our coffee table since last weekend.
Second: I saw that shoutout when my IK came last night — I thought it was fantastic! (though a little weird you weren’t contacted?) You’ve done a great thing here.
Third: What’s the yarn you’re using for the socks? Is it the tess?

  19. lollyon 28 Jul 2006 at 8:57 am

Oops! Thanks for the reminder, Ann -
The yarn for the Lace Knee Highs is theMerino Fingering Weight from Three Waters Farm, purchased at this year’s Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival. It is just gorgeous!

  20. Karinon 28 Jul 2006 at 9:31 am

Congrats on the IK mention - it really has been a fun project - my first in blogland. I love the idea of the PS Clean Sweep, too. You’ll have to stop enabling me for new projects ‘tho (seeing the ballet tank on your sister, meant I have to get going on mine, sitting in a bag still) and then maybe I can catch up!

  21. Sourire11on 28 Jul 2006 at 9:45 am

    Congrats!!! That’s awesome!

I have to get back into the PS mode… I was good with it until purple… and then I got very distracted by the amazing lace… but I already have several neutral color projects planned! I love the Sept. cleanup month idea - I may make that my purple!

Thanks for organizing such a fun knit along!

  22. Saraon 28 Jul 2006 at 9:46 am

wow, you do have really long feet. i never would’ve believed that sock would fit you until i saw it on your foot.

    btw, nice ikea plug. :-)

  23. Amyon 28 Jul 2006 at 9:50 am

Congrats on the IK mention - I’ll have to look for it.

Long feet - if/when I finally get going with the socks I think that will be one of my problems.

Was the unmentioned giddiness about the new Ikea catalog? :)

  24. Amberon 28 Jul 2006 at 10:30 am

Congrats Lolly! How exciting! :) I love the pic of your swift next to the window. I have always wanted a mirror like that (in the backgroud of your pic.)

  25. Kellyon 28 Jul 2006 at 10:32 am

Your sock looks great! I have the same long foot problem you do so a lot of socks I knit are for family members with smaller feet. Congratulations on the Ik article!

  26. catherineon 28 Jul 2006 at 10:35 am

love the sock! and mimi’s tank is beautiful! looks good with your reege hat too ;)

  27. Kathyon 28 Jul 2006 at 10:58 am

IK? Someday we’ll be saying, “we knew her when….” :)

I’m not sure I can handle a PS 2. Whew! I got a lot done this time around, but it was mostly greedy knitting - all for me!

I love the color you’re using for the kneesocks.

  28. gleekon 28 Jul 2006 at 11:12 am

oooh, i like the colors of that wound up yarn! what is that? it’s such a great brown with speckles.

the trek socks turned out nice. yeah, having large feet can be a real bummer. i hear ya on that front.

  29. Karenon 28 Jul 2006 at 11:23 am

I thought it was pretty cool when I saw the blurb in IK. Kudos to you!

Lovely sleeping sock. I like it much better with a heel in it. :)

  30. Chrison 28 Jul 2006 at 12:02 pm

Congrats on the IWK mention! It’s good to see a brilliant idea recognized. :) And I really hope there is a PSII - I enjoyed how the color focus changed both the way I looked at the world and the way I related to colors. Thank you!!!

  31. margeneon 28 Jul 2006 at 12:37 pm

Trekking socks take longer than most because we just don’t have much time for ‘real’ Trekking. Think I’ll start wrapping up my PS knitting in August. I’m going to need the extra time to get ready for Socktober! Your Rowan socks are going to be so cool!

  32. Beatrizon 28 Jul 2006 at 1:05 pm

Congratulations on your fabulous Project Spectrum idea…I’m glad it was mentioned in the IK Fall 2006 issue. I’ll buy a copy just for that reason alone. The Trekking socks looks great!

  33. cecilyon 28 Jul 2006 at 1:25 pm

I TOO would love to see a cleanup month AND a Project Spectrum 2…then I could actuallyfollow month to month, instead of just waiting for blue and purple. ;)

Thanks for organizing a wonderful thing. :)

  34. terbyon 28 Jul 2006 at 1:30 pm

Lolly congratulations! You made the big time.

What is that delicious brown yarn you’re using? I think I need some…

  35. Lyndaon 28 Jul 2006 at 1:39 pm

Very cool that Project Spectrum got a mention in IK!

Ahh, there are really very few things as satisfying as winding up a lovely cake of yarn, are there?

  36. Stephon 28 Jul 2006 at 1:53 pm

I love those Trekking socks, the colors are so beautiful!
Congrats on the IK mention, very cool :-)

  37. Lisaon 28 Jul 2006 at 2:11 pm

The trekking looks fabulously comfortable. I’ve never knit with it myself, but I think I may need to go add some to the stash! And I love the yarn for the knee-highs - what a great aubergine color.

Congrats on the recognition for Project Spectrum. I wasn’t a participant, but it is certainly a great way to encourage knitters to explore colors they wouldn’t naturally gravitate to. I’d certainly sign up for a project spectrum v. 2.0!

  38. Jennaon 28 Jul 2006 at 2:57 pm

Congrats on hitting the big time! Something to add to your portfolio. I think you shuld become a Crafting Creativity Consultant :)
I’m glad that you’re a bad girl like me, starting on your brown project early. I don’t blame you, those socks are so, so gorgeous.

Is that the new Ikea catalog behind your sock? i love.

  39. Erinon 28 Jul 2006 at 4:14 pm

    Lolly,
Just got IK today and there’s a nice little paragraph in it. That’s awesome! I’m still trying to decide what to do for next month but I’ll have pleny to do during the finish it up month.

  40. Monion 28 Jul 2006 at 4:39 pm

I love those knee high socks! I’m actually going to do some knee-highs for August, too!

  41. Debbyon 28 Jul 2006 at 7:12 pm

Lolly, congratulations on the mention in Interweave Knits! You’re very talented and I’m so glad you got the recognition you deserve. I do hope that you do the Project Spectrum again. I joined the blogosphere late, and have only been participating at the very end…missed all the good colors and am coming in at the neutrals.

Can’t wait to see your new socks!

  42. Rebeccaon 28 Jul 2006 at 7:24 pm

    You are FAMOUS! ta-ta-ta-dah!

If I create a photo album for the Sleeping Socks in the Vintage Knits KAL, will you please add your picture??? I love the sock!

  43. knittingnurseon 28 Jul 2006 at 9:23 pm

Yeah ! I’m so proud of YOU!!! FABULOUS dahling, simply FABULOUS!

  44. vanessaon 28 Jul 2006 at 10:34 pm

That’s so awesome. I’m really looking forward to the next project spectrum.

  45. kristinon 28 Jul 2006 at 11:29 pm

Getting mentioned in the article … very cool, girl! : ) Here’s hoping for PS version 2.0.

  46. Lauraon 29 Jul 2006 at 1:26 am

I saw that today and said “Oh my gosh!!” My kids said what? what? hehe Very cool to be mentioned in Amy Singer’s column Lolly! :)

  47. mrspaoon 29 Jul 2006 at 3:03 am

Congratulations :) That is kudos indeed. I’m up for a PS2!

I love your socks - they are gorgeous! To quote a famous nursery rhyme character: “My what long feet you have” (I couldn’t resist)

  48. Momon 29 Jul 2006 at 7:44 am

Congrats Lol’! You are so “mentionworthy”. I’ve been mentioning you for years. :-) Love those socks! XXOO

  49. iselon 29 Jul 2006 at 8:46 am

Ohhh, Lolly is now even more famous!! Woot, woot! :D

Congratulations and thank you for coming up with the idea. It’s been a lot of fun.

Your sock is sooo pretty. I love that colorway and the transitions. Yum.

  50. Theresaon 29 Jul 2006 at 1:31 pm

The IK knee high is so beautiful. Can’t wait to see pictures of your progress. And the yarn you will use is so rich.

    Congrats on the IK mention!

  51. Jeanineon 29 Jul 2006 at 4:21 pm

I was leafing through my IK last night and saw that mention about you and Project Spectrum. How awesome is that!

I love the colorway you’ve selected for the knee highs.

  52. Jenon 29 Jul 2006 at 7:46 pm

Your socks are great and I am so jealous of the swift and winder. I still do mine by hand!!!! :)

I absolutely love the colors of those socks…I know you’ve wanted to knit them for a long time.

    Congrats!
