Cusp
On the cusp of Project Spectrum August… and I really just could not wait to start on my brown lace socks!
That is four repeats of the mock cable cuff, and through Row 10 of the lace pattern. It is nearly impossible to make out in the photograph, but there are some embossed leaves there! I have a confession: this is my first charted pattern. While I have knit a few cabled things, I have knit virtually no lace. Sure, I think it is absolutely breathtaking and gorgeous, but I just could not get the hang of it before. However, this chart is going well… at least up to this point! Maybe more lace charts are in my future.
I don't know how I missed it before, but it appears that Jody is working on the same socks (in a suggested tweedy wool too - she is such a good girl!) - and it looks like we are around the same point in the chart… so see hers for the detail ;) Also, Strikker Kris made them last year in a great purple tweed. I am using the Three Waters Farm Merino Fingering Weight, purchased at Maryland Sheep and Wool this year.
Although I started knitting on the browns, I still had some purple projects in mind before July finished - I completed my postcard pal's card (I know, I am late - thank goodness Suzanne lives so close!) and will show it after she receives it. And in the spirit of stashbusting, I used the leftovers from my March beading project for a late July project - it seems that the line between pink and purple is pretty thin in this shade.
Resting atop the Post Arts section …
And I sported this purple handcrafted necklace (not crafted by me, unfortunately!) out this weekend - My sister Sarah brought this purple shell necklace back from Oahu after her trip in March.

PS-Do you want another round of Project Spectrum? What do you want different next time? When do you want it to start? I started a discussion thread on the Flickr Project Spectrum page, but all comments and suggestions about how to make Project Spectrum better are also welcome here. Please let me know because I am making plans now!

The new socks are looking great! Another round of Project Spectrum sounds like fun…I’ll have to think about what differences might be fun & get back to you. Thanks for hosting such a fun event!
You socks are looking great!
I would absolutely love another edition of Project Spectrum! (I saw you mentioned in the Interweave Press article by the way - congrats! - you’re famous!)
I think it would be cool to do one for an entire year. A year of colors. You could issue challenges - like knit an object in the color of the month, post pictures of every object in your house that color or write about how that color makes you feel - or what memories you have when looking at that color. The list could go on and on…
-Jody
I want more! Every month!
I confess to being a lurker - I’ve enjoyed reading your blog and since I came late to finding out about Project Spectrum, I would love another one at some time in the future
I think it’s a fantastic idea.
That shell necklace is GORGEOUS!!
I loved PS so I’d love it again. I know it’s kind of hokey, but I’d love to see red in February and green in March.
I already posted on Flickr! but YES YES YES to round two of Project Spectrum!! I like Jody’s ideas. Like we all have to be hardcore about the month’s color. And maybe, if it were to be a year-long run, split red and pink, yellow and orange. Oh the possibilities!!
More project spectrum!! It gives me such a good excuse to use new colors. I wouldn’t even mind another repeat month of each color- like twice a year or so. Or, maybe colorway months? Like fall colors, winter colors, rainbows, etc.
The color of the yarn in your socks is so beautiful! Fall is just around the corner…
Love the picture of you and Little Darlin’ M and yourself. She is so sweet! I’m sure that you enjoyed your time with the girls and K & K. XXOO
Lace is alot of fun once you get the hang of it. Your socks look great. I really enjoyed ps and would definitely love another round!
August is already here? Jeez!!!
I’m sure you’ll have no problem figuring out that chart. The socks are looking great already.
Project Spectrum. I could do it again, yes. It’s fun and flexible enough that you can breathe. I’ll check the forum later today.
You girls look like you’re planning something bad.
Despite my sadness that August is almost here, the sock looks great! I liked the flexibility of Project Spectrum and would happily do it again- what if you did it all next year?
Hi Lolly … I feel so dumb! I thought I was all into the PS!!!
I just went to Flickr and found out I’m not even a member of the group!
I’ve posted all kinds of colors and stuff on my blog (even made it PURPLE for July!) and lovely collages in my sidebar! And lo. I’m not even ‘in’!
I am so sad! I wish I would have figured out my lack of membership earlier! Waaah. :o) Can you help me?
BTW - I always love coming here …. you are SO productive! VERY inspiring!
ProjSpec is such a great idea and I’m glad you are going to continue it. I think it should start in January, especially if you are going to do Socktoberfest again (hint hint). With the winter and holiday knitting coming up doing ProjSpec might be a bit much. The only thing I would change is getting more people to help you the next time around. I’m sure a lot more people signed up than you ever anticipated.
I’m up for another round of PS! It might be interesting to explore working with colors that complement each other on the color wheel.
I knew you were going to cave with those socks, hehe. It works out well because you’ll have them finished and be able to wear them when we get that first bit of autumn coolness in the air (which seems so far off on a day like today -yuck!).
I think for project spectrum: the sequel, I’d like to see it be more about colors in relation to one another. Of course, we know they’re great on their own, but how do they work together? That’s what I would like to explore.
I have really enjoyed it, from a knitting and spinning perspective, and I hope you continue on in one way or another.
Perhaps a colorWAY every month. Or a color harmony? We could work from analagous colorways through to the every other color one (I can’t remember the name, eek!) all the way around the color wheel. Or, as someone else said, earth colors, rainbows, whatever. Can you tell I’m a color junkie?
Your socks are going to be so pretty in that colorway- not to mention, perfect for Fall!
I think another round would be great! I’m bummed I got so busy some months that it flew by without me even noticing. I’d love another shot. Maybe add instead of color months, tone months - brights, neutrals, pastels, etc…there are so many ways to use color, I think we could come up with 12 easily!
The socks are great - I was eyeing my TWF yarn just yesterday!
Great yarn on the socks! I lived in Maryland for 4 years while I was in college, and I’m so sad that I didn’t knit back then because I would have been able to go to Maryland Sheep and Wool.
At least I can live vicariously through your blog!
Definitely another round! Maybe break up the color combo months (red/pink, orange/yellow, neutrals) more and intersperse the neutrals (as browns, as white, as black) with the brighter colors? You would probably have enough colors for the entire year!
OH YES, another PS!
I love the socks and what a gorgeous necklace, Lolly.
And I think I agree with Stacey and many others, many instead of colours, we’d do tones or colourways or even season colours - work around the Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter calendar. Concurrently, we could have a few months each dedicated to different crafts, without pressure, join if you want type of thing. Say, jewelry, knitting, crochet, sewing, etc, in the assigned colours. Ohhh I am bursting with ideas!!!!
Ok, now back to project spectrum II - I think a full year is a good idea, yes.
love the socks. I haven’t done PS yet but plan to sign up with next run if you have one.
I found out about PS halfway through it, with numorious projects lined up already! I would love for there to be another one in the future to take part in! All the ideas above are great as well! To give you some more ideas, maybe every thrid month (So four times a year total) would focus on the season rather than a set color/colorway? Like “Spring Time”, “Summer Time”, “Fall”, or “‘Tis the Season - Gift Knitting”? Something that uses color/s to convey the time of year. Maybe each month you could have a short list of ideas like in Feb. (assuming it will be red) have one of your projects be a Chemo cap to donate, or in the spring a cute knit top for the munchkins in your life …
Lolly, I haven’t been around much but I wanted to let you know you look amazing! And the sock isn’t too bad either!
More Project Spectrum? I say, Bring It!
I am loving your brown sock yarn, what is it? I just started a project (early for August) that uses charting too, it’s a practice project for bigger charting projects. I figured that I had better start small to get the hang of it!
Those socks look great so far-good luck on the lace!
I like the ideas others had about the season focus on colors. I think that each season of colors should be 2 months long, with a wrap-up month as the third month for us stragglers. I also like the idea of issuing challenges. I think the general theme of Project Spectrum should be left open, just to explore the color, but maybe an occasional challenge would be fun. Perhaps, take a picture of a car in a certain color-that could get kind of hard to find. Or experiment with a craft you aren’t familiar with in the color of the month.
I just started my gray lace knee-highs today! I’m excited to get back to socks again. I love the yarn and pattern you’re using!
That shell necklace is gorgeous!!!
What a pretty shell necklace that is! Very different.
I would love another PS…I like the idea of it being for a whole year too.
The socks look great. When will you be starting a lace shawl?
The sequence you chose (ROY G. BIV) for the colors are easy to follow, so I really don’t want to see that change. Project Spectrum II would be a fantastic idea!
I like having Project Spectrum as colours, rather then types of craft - if I want to knit, I want to knit.
One option is do it in reverse order: so you start with black/white/neutrals, then go on to purples, and finish with red and pink.
You could have catch-up months in between other months, or alternatively ‘fade’ from one colour to another. So you have a green month, then a green and blue month, then a blue month, then a blue and purple month etc.
You should give me some beading tips…that sounds like a fabulous project for Pixie and I…
The shell necklace is so so pretty…it makes me want to look at how it’s constructed!
Yes please! I would love another round of Project Spectrum, with the colours falling in different months. I take my camera out with me most days and it was so interesting having something specific to focus on. Well done, Lolly, for thinking of the idea in the first place!
I’d love another PS, with separate months for brownish and black/grey/white. I didn’t always make something in that colour for that month, but it was fun to go out looking for blue flowers or whatever.
