Once Upon a Dream

This tweed, originally purchased for this sweater, has been on my mind a lot lately… so much so that I even dreamed about it last week. I was still working on my socks, however, and needed to finish before I started anything new. However, now that the socks are off the needles (and have been worn several times since!), I was ready to start working with this beautiful yarn. I discovered that this Dalegarn Sisik is a dead-on gauge match for several of the tweedy Rowan yarns, so it was the perfect substitute for one of the patterns that I have admired many times…

Rowan's Cherie

'Tis Cherie from the beautiful book, Vintage Knits, originally published by Rowan as Vintage Style in 2004.

Vintage Knits: Thirty Knitting Designs for Men and Women This particular pattern, like many in the book, was designed by Kim Hargreaves. The neckline is my favorite part – boatneck with the little buttons! There are only a few finished "Cheries" that I have seen on the Web, and they mentioned that some tweaking was necessary in the neckline and the sleeves… so I hope it doesn't require too much to get the right fit. I want that neckline!

However, I am already thinking about what pants, skirts and handknit socks will match this pullover… so, as you can see, it is my destiny to knit this sweater. ;)

On Halloween night, while on trick-or-treat door duty, I cast on for Cherie… and I made some real progress! It has to be the yarn. It just flows through my fingers so well, and I am in love with this color.

Cherie

Back ribbing complete, and 1.5 inches into the stockinette body.

Cherie will also qualify for three knitalongs that I am currently participating in: Tweeding Along, and the Red Sweater KAL, and NaNoSweMo.

This is going to be good… I have that feeling!

That red tweed is gonna look fab!!

  5. Terra

I love the cherie pattern, much more so than the pattern the tweed was originally intended for, its a very flattering neckline and the buttons are super cute. Looking forward to seeing the finished result!

    A sweater in a month? That’s quite a gauntlet to throw down….
Beautiful color for a beautiful sweater. It’s a classic and simple sweater in a beautiful yarn. You know it was meant to be when you dreamt about it! You’re making me want to make something in tweed, and I don’t even have any….

  8. Stacey

I will just be impressed if you finish the sweater in less than one month. I wish I could knit as fast as everyone else. Incidentaly, do you knit continentally? I have been obessed with the idea of that lately, convinced that it must be faster…

  9. Jodie

I started a sweater last night on trick or treat door duty too. It’s the Coral Crossing sweater from the Fall ’06 Interweave. Maybe I’ll finish it in Novemeber too. That would be awesome, but I’m not sure it will be likely.

  10. Kim

I knitted Hourglass in that same red sisik. It’s such a great yarn! Cherie is gorgeous!

  11. Erin

That sweater is going to be lovely. I can feel it! I think i might join NaNoSweMo–if only so I can say it over and over. NaNoSewMo. funny.

Yay for Cherie! I’ve got this pattern earmarked for sometime in my future knits! But first… I have to finishe the other 2 Vintage Knits sweaters I have on the needles (Joy and Salina)! The color is going to look lovely on you! Can’t wait to see more!

  21. Sarah

That yarn is lovely! I just love how tweeds knit up. I certainly hope you’ll pick some fun buttons for this sweater!

  25. Pauliina

    Hi!

I’m also working on Cherie at the moment. The pattern for the sleeves is definitely not correct! I’m making size M and I ended up casting on 52 sts instead of 70 mentioned in the pattern. I still haven’t made it to the neckline but I hope it’ll turn out right. For the sleeves I took some advice from the sleeve pattern for Elise in the same booklet. Good luck with your Cherie!

  26. Lizzy B

That will look wonderful on you Lolly!

    NaNoSweMo how fun!

  27. Karen

Pretty! I have that color sitting in my stash too. Along with a few other colors too… ;)

  28. Lisa

Love that pullover! It’s chic and sophisticated, yet simple. I also love the button for the Red Sweater KAL – I’ve always been a big Marilyn fan!

  29. Avice

Great choice…maybe this is my inspiration to finish a Noro sweater that has been hanging around — my resolve always falters when I hit the sleeves. I am thinking that it might be a good birthday present for my sister Moira, if I don’t keep it for myself….

  30. Kelly

What gorgeous sweater! It’s going to look great in that shade of red!

  31. heather

sisik! I know you love it! it’s going to be gorgeous!

  32. Allegra

Great choice! I love Cherie! I can’t wait to see it finished!

  33. lorinda

The sweater is beautiful, but I want that book for the gorgeous guy in it.

  34. Debby

I love the neckline of your new sweater!!

  35. margene

Three in ones are always fun! I might need to buy that book just for that pattern alone. It’s going to be a great sweater Lolly!

  36. tiennie

Go Lolly! I know you can do it and I can’t wait to see Cherie on ya!

  37. Erin

That’s definitely going to be a lovely sweater. I love that neckline too. I’ve been looking for a pattern with something similar…. I just have too many Christmas presents to think about first!

  38. dani

That sweater is going to be beautiful on you. However, I’m terrified at the thought of knitting a sweater in the month of November. That’s crazy talk!

  39. elizabeth

I love this sweater. I can’t wait to see yours!

  40. gleek

wow, one sweater that meets three KAL needs? genius :)

the neckline is the first thing that i noticed about this sweater. it’s just sooo cute and flattering.

  41. Dorothy B

  42. maryse

i love the color too. it’s going to be beautiful.

  43. kelp!

I too love the neckline on Cherie, but then I’m a sucker for boatneck sweaters!

Is the Sisik awesome? I really regret not buying a bunch of it when Webs had it on super-sale a few months ago…

  44. christine

You are so right – that color is wonderful!

  45. Gracie

Beautiful sweater!! The color is fab!

  46. Shannon

Have updated the name after someone pointed out it should be NaKniSweMo. Just as fun to say, but technically correct, abbreviation-wise! See everyone over at knitgrrl.com for NaKniSweMo! :)

  47. meg

i also love that color. gorgeous.

  48. Laura

That’s going to be a fabulous sweater. I love your yarn! I hope you don’t have to tweek the pattern too much to get the neckline you want. It’s lovely in the photo.

  49. Stacey

so pretty – red and tweed – what a great combo! Is the sisik soft? It will look fabulous on that sweater – any ideas on colors for buttons? So many colors you could pull out with the tweedy bits!

  50. Kellie

I’m so glad you’re knitting Cherie and I can’t wait to see how it comes out. This was the second major sweater I attempted, but unfortunately I didn’t have the skillz/motivation to figure out how to change the neckline. I finished and seamed the whole thing, tried it on, and immediately began frogging! Hopefully yours will inspire me to go back and fix it up. Good luck!
