This tweed, originally purchased for this sweater, has been on my mind a lot lately… so much so that I even dreamed about it last week. I was still working on my socks, however, and needed to finish before I started anything new. However, now that the socks are off the needles (and have been worn several times since!), I was ready to start working with this beautiful yarn. I discovered that this Dalegarn Sisik is a dead-on gauge match for several of the tweedy Rowan yarns, so it was the perfect substitute for one of the patterns that I have admired many times…
'Tis Cherie from the beautiful book, Vintage Knits, originally published by Rowan as Vintage Style in 2004.

This particular pattern, like many in the book, was designed by Kim Hargreaves. The neckline is my favorite part – boatneck with the little buttons! There are only a few finished "Cheries" that I have seen on the Web, and they mentioned that some tweaking was necessary in the neckline and the sleeves… so I hope it doesn't require too much to get the right fit. I want that neckline! |
However, I am already thinking about what pants, skirts and handknit socks will match this pullover… so, as you can see, it is my destiny to knit this sweater. 
On Halloween night, while on trick-or-treat door duty, I cast on for Cherie… and I made some real progress! It has to be the yarn. It just flows through my fingers so well, and I am in love with this color.
Back ribbing complete, and 1.5 inches into the stockinette body.
Cherie will also qualify for three knitalongs that I am currently participating in: Tweeding Along, and the Red Sweater KAL, and NaNoSweMo.

I have been in a tweeding mood as well lately, and I am knitting red (but not tweed yet). it must be the season! I do love the Dalegarn Sisik, thanks for the tip.

I love the cherie pattern, much more so than the pattern the tweed was originally intended for, its a very flattering neckline and the buttons are super cute. Looking forward to seeing the finished result!

Beautiful color for a beautiful sweater. It’s a classic and simple sweater in a beautiful yarn. You know it was meant to be when you dreamt about it! You’re making me want to make something in tweed, and I don’t even have any….
I will just be impressed if you finish the sweater in less than one month. I wish I could knit as fast as everyone else. Incidentaly, do you knit continentally? I have been obessed with the idea of that lately, convinced that it must be faster…
I started a sweater last night on trick or treat door duty too. It’s the Coral Crossing sweater from the Fall ’06 Interweave. Maybe I’ll finish it in Novemeber too. That would be awesome, but I’m not sure it will be likely.
I knitted Hourglass in that same red sisik. It’s such a great yarn! Cherie is gorgeous!

I’m also working on Cherie at the moment. The pattern for the sleeves is definitely not correct! I’m making size M and I ended up casting on 52 sts instead of 70 mentioned in the pattern. I still haven’t made it to the neckline but I hope it’ll turn out right. For the sleeves I took some advice from the sleeve pattern for Elise in the same booklet. Good luck with your Cherie!

Great choice…maybe this is my inspiration to finish a Noro sweater that has been hanging around — my resolve always falters when I hit the sleeves. I am thinking that it might be a good birthday present for my sister Moira, if I don’t keep it for myself….

I’m so glad you’re knitting Cherie and I can’t wait to see how it comes out. This was the second major sweater I attempted, but unfortunately I didn’t have the skillz/motivation to figure out how to change the neckline. I finished and seamed the whole thing, tried it on, and immediately began frogging! Hopefully yours will inspire me to go back and fix it up. Good luck!
