Neverending Story

Published by lolly at 9:10 am under Hokusai Ribs, Socks

Socktoberfest may be over for another year, but for many of us, socks are a neverending story. Even the strictly monogamous knitters and crocheters out there usually make an exception for socks…

After finishing my Lace Knee Highs, I shifted my sock knitting gaze back upon the lovely Yarn Pirate ribbed socks, nicknamed "Hokusai" because the color palette reminded me of the Japanese artist's work.

I am following the Madder Ribbed Sock pattern from Nancy Bush's Knitting Vintage Socks. (Speaking of Nancy: my INTERVIEW with her was a real highlight of my Socktoberfest celebration! Such a pleasure!) I originally planned knee socks with this yarn, but I think that the lovely colorway will be well-suited in this attractive ribbed pattern.

And in true obsessive fashion, I am already planning the new socks I am going to knit this season. Thankfully, you helped me out with a little decision-making!

Voting Map

Not the latest tally, but the trend is clear: you all prefer green leaves! and being that all of the yarns are beautiful, and there is no shortage of beautiful patterns in this world, I will graciously oblige, and make the Embossed Leaves socks in Cherry Tree Hill Loden.

Thanks for helping me decide!

Still pining away for Socktoberfest? Well, you are in luck! There are still many sock-related projects going on, and the Socktoberfest Flickr group will stay open for submissions and inspirations all year long!

Some of the other sock projects that have caught my eye and attention:

  • LimeGreenJelly's Big Sock Project: She and several other UK-knitters cast on for the world's largest sock! They are using ten circular needles, and cast on 1500 stitches! Over 50 knitters participated in the cast on, and a good amount of money was raised for charity on the same day! Jo is hoping that the sock will break the current world record, and even better yet? She wants YOUR help in doing so! She is willing to send the sock anywhere in the world for knitters to knit on. This would be a fun project for Stitch `n Bitch groups! Talk about being a part of something BIG! ;)

  • Hillary's Sock Madness Competition: In Hillary's words, Sock Madness is " …a competitive sock knitting event like no other. It will involve knitters from around the world knitting socks in a tournament style competition. The patterns will be released at the start of each round and, we hope, will be unique." Sounds great!! And it all starts in March 2007. And my favorite part of it? "As with any tournament, we’ll need spectators and cheerleaders too." I am a great cheerleader ;)

So, you don't have to go into withdrawal with all of these fun things going on! If you know of other sock-alongs or related projects, please leave a comment!

I’m glad you’re restarting the Hokusai socks. That color is too rich and beautiful to pass up. I would try to make those socks the highlight of my outfit every time I wore them.

That giant sock is great! I just hope they’re knitting on needles larger than size 0 or 1!

Oh I’m glad you found something for the blue/multi yarn – I love that colorway and was so disappointed for you when it didn’t work out for the last pattern. Thanks for always keeping us inspired – you keep knitting (and reading) fun!

The Yarn Pirate colorway is so amazing and so are you for keeping the Sockterfest going. The embossed leaves are one of the prettiest sock patterns out there!

I really like the blue/brown colourway. So pretty together.

1500 stitches for a sock. Wow, that’s a heck of a cast on!

    That colorway is just gorgeous!

I can’t wait to see your progress on embossed leaves, you’ve made me search through my stash for something appropriate, maybe koigu?

1500 stitches? I wonder if they’re going to do a heel?

that yarn is beautiful, and Hokusai is the perfect name for it! one of his beautiful prints is on my mousepad, and I just love staring at it, I can’t imagine how fun it would be to knit with it!

You know, Lolly, I’ve successfully resisted Socktoberfest (I’ve already done 7 pairs this year — I needed a break), but with each post of yours I read, I’m tempted. I look longingly through my sock stash, fingering the beautiful handpainted colourways. I have holiday knitting to do — I must resist!

Hokusai makes me happy and I voted for the loden leaves socsk, so I’m looking forward to seeing both socks progress! Have fun thsi weekend (I’m sure you will)!

I love the Hokusai! What a great inspiration for a name. And 1500 stitches?!?! How are they all knitting on it at the same time, I wonder?

  18. Brandyon 04 Nov 2006 at 12:04 am

I have that pattern and I am getting ready to make those socks.

I finished my first pair of socks. I didnt get them down by Halloween nite but I did finish them today!! They came out lovely too for my first pair.

The Sock Madness thing looks like SOOO much fun! And, even better, my holiday knitting will be done by March. muhahaha!

Oh, and I’m extremely jealous of your Yarn Pirate yarn.

I love the Hokusai, it’s beautiful.

I wonder if that huge sock wants to make a trip to philadelphia…

  21. Beckyon 04 Nov 2006 at 1:28 am

I wanted to thank you for doing Socktoberfest. Although I didn’t officially finish a pair (I finished a mismatched pair – one sock each from two different patterns) this really got me excited about socks. I have several more patterns picked out and just increased my sock yarn stash as well.

  22. staceyon 04 Nov 2006 at 2:14 am

cheerleader it will be for me also! I can’t wait to see you start the embosses leaves – that color will be fab!
