Handy Dandy

Published by lolly at 4:00 am under Mittens / Gloves,Stashbusting

The bind off was just in time to combat the cold winds that blew through Maryland and DC! These little mitts were quite handy today! And see how perfectly they match my beloved Point Five scarf? I was going to give these as a gift, but seeing the perfect color match, I may just have to keep them… that, and they smell like my lotion now ;)

Fetching Mitts

Fetching Mitts
Pattern: Knitty Summer 2006
Yarn: Karabella Aurora 8 in 1547 colorway
Source: Springwater Fiber Workshop
Needle: Size 6 Brittany Birch DPNs

There is a reason you are seeing these little mitts all over the blogs! They are fun, quick, and a perfect one-skein project! The Karabella ball was purchased back in August when I went to Springwater with MamaE and Carole. The beautiful color caught my eye, and even though it was only one ball in the clearance bin, I figured I could find a way to use it. This one ball was perfect for this project. I used all but 3 inches of the yarn in the entire ball! I plan to make these again very soon, as I have some other random 50g skeins in the stash that could whip up into this pattern in a matter of hours. It's also a perfect first cables project – easy and clearly written in the pattern. In fact, it is a perfect submission for the Fall Cables knitalong too (and I have another one planned!)

I plan to wear the Fetching mitts as I head to Stitches East later this morning. I am looking forward to a great day with some beautiful yarns, and some friendly faces. I am planning to look for some laceweight yarns, as I am interested in trying more lace projects, and also some Noro. After scanning my book and magazine collection, I reacquainted myself with several patterns that I really liked.

Kolsva Cowl Among them, the beautiful Kolsva cowl-neck sweater, designed by Cornelia Tuttle Hamilton, in the Noro Revisited book. It calls for 5 skeins of Noro Kochoran, which is a beautiful (and pricey) yarn. I am hoping to find the fabled cheap Noro and make my purchase.

Wish me luck!

that cold wind blew down south too, and i haven’t made the mitts yet. i have printed the pattern from knitty, but a sheet of paper ain’t gonna do diddly to keep my hands warm!

  10. gleekon 04 Nov 2006 at 9:00 am

those fetching are super cute! i’m so glad to hear that it only took one ball for the both of them. i have aurora leftover from my zigzag scarf so i may whip up a pair to match :)

have fun at stitches! if you can’t find noro there for cheap, try ebay. i bought my bag of silk garden on ebay for a great price.

Hi Lolly, I am a bit of a Noro addict, and buy all mine from E-bay, I’m not sure but some of the e-bay uk sellers are selling it cheaper (without tax) to US, so worth a look.

  13. Stacion 04 Nov 2006 at 9:33 am

    Happy yarn hunting!

I think I’m the only blogger that hasn’t tried the fetching mitts yet. They’re very cute.

  14. Jenon 04 Nov 2006 at 9:36 am

  15. Aviceon 04 Nov 2006 at 9:56 am

You go girl! Here’s to a successful Noro-vember! Your pals expect a full debriefing on Monday.

  16. no-blog-rachelon 04 Nov 2006 at 10:02 am

Lolly – if you don’t find the Noro Kochoran at the right price today, Webs (yarn.com) has it at 11.99 a skein, which looks like a pretty hefty discount. Not a ton of colors but they have 4 or 5 options. It’s beautiful yarn – I can see why you want to use that! I got some Noro from Webs about 4 weeks ago – their Cash Iroha and also some Silk Garden for 6.79 – not bad.

Have fun at Stitches East – I can’t wait for Stitches West in February!

Love the mitts…Daughter just saw them and now wants a pair…can I make them in cotton? I have a ball of Tahki Cotton Classis left over from a head wrap that I made her…would love a matching set. Any thoughts?

  22. Tamaron 04 Nov 2006 at 12:58 pm

  28. Alexison 04 Nov 2006 at 3:13 pm

Love the Fetching! I’ve finished two pairs myself and they are so fast and lovely. I will be doing two more pairs before the holidays are over, at least. What a great gift pattern!

That color is stunning, and it does go very well with your scarf, so I say they’re yours now :-)

  29. Monion 04 Nov 2006 at 4:25 pm

I love the Fetching mitts! Absolutely love them!

I hope you found some Kochoran for that lovely sweater!

  30. Barbon 04 Nov 2006 at 6:06 pm

I love Fetching and your blue onces are pretty.

  31. Heatheron 04 Nov 2006 at 6:12 pm

I really want to make those mits, but here fingerless gloves are silly. Gloves need fingers. Sometimes you need two layers of gloves!
Before I moved, wore fingerless mits all the time in the winter, and that was okay. sigh.
Although, I may end up wearing them at work if I made them…

  32. Jillianon 04 Nov 2006 at 6:32 pm

Cute mitts – I wish I had thought to make some when I lived in NH. Perfect for typing in really cold rooms!

  33. Kellyon 04 Nov 2006 at 6:35 pm

Your fetching mitts came out great! It is such a fast fun pattern. I’m already on my 3rd pair.

Hope you had fun at stitches and found the yarn you were looking for. That is a really great sweater!

  34. Veraon 04 Nov 2006 at 10:18 pm

Fetching looks fab. I have the yarn, and I plan to get to it soon.

  40. Suzon 05 Nov 2006 at 2:27 pm

The “Mitts”, umm…about how many yards would you guess that is? I have 100 yards of something i bought off of ebay and so far it’s not seemed like enough to make anything. I’m wondering if it’s enough for the mitts??

Yikes! i had another question or comment and in 10 seconds it’s totally escaped me. ROFL@self. Oh well. ;)

They are great! Very fetching :)

  42. *karenon 05 Nov 2006 at 3:59 pm

Looks beautiful but I have to ask: Do they actually keep your hands warm? Really? I would think your fingers would be freezing. I guess I am just wondering how practical they are…

  43. Staceyon 05 Nov 2006 at 4:15 pm

I just made a pair of those Fetching gloves last weekend…haven’t blogged about them yet though. Super easy. Yours look great :)

  44. Skylaron 05 Nov 2006 at 8:34 pm

Oh my, those gloves are a perfect shade of blue. How lovely! I just finally got caught up reading your last 7 posts (Mr Wonderful and I were on a week long vacay). You’ve been busy, but I am excited to learn more about your “calling.” BTW, I did get one sock in for Soctoberfest. I will post it soon…

  45. Jenna Pink Monkeyon 05 Nov 2006 at 10:22 pm

I like how the bright color of your mitts shows through so well in those photos. They look lovely. Stitches was a good time and I’m glad you were able to achieve some of your purchasing goals. I hope you had un today with your mama!

  52. [...] Well they are done!!! and they are FETCHING! From Knitty summer ‘06 Like Lolly, I only had a teeny bit of yarn left! I was glad that I didn’t need another skein for just a few rows!  These are too cute I’m still wearing them as I type! [...]
