Yarn-Packing District

Published by lolly at 7:51 pm under Cherie,Kolsva Cowl

Kris and will be leaving bright and early tomorrow morning for California, and right now, I am determining what knits to take with me. I have completed the back of Cherie, and will start on the sleeves this evening while watching the hockey game. Sleeves seem like an easy enough travel knit. I could just start on the front too…

Cherie Cherie

The color in the right photo is true to life – it is a nice dark cherry red with lovely tweedy flecks and a nice shine. The yarn, Dale of Norway Sisik, is a blend of wool, mohair, silk, and viscose… so many different fibers coming together in this amazing yarn.

Cherie Back

The knitting has been quick, as I only started this last week. This sweater is part of three knitalongs, if you recall – one of them being Shannon's National Sweater Knitting Month (NaKniSweMo) knitalong, so I need to finish this by the 30th of November. With airplane, car, bus, and train knitting on the upcoming trip, I think I can make some real progress.

In fact, I am so optimistic, I am also bringing my new Noro Kochoran. While winding it on the ball winder this afternoon, I observed the true beauty of this yarn. It is so pretty and will make a lovely sweater. Even if I do not complete the sweater for the Norovember knitalong, I can start it, and hopefully, it will go quickly on the requisite size 9 needles that the pattern calls for (the pattern is the "Kolsva" pullover from Noro Revisited collection.)

And because my life doesn't quite seem complete without some socks on the needles, the Hokusai Ribs are coming along too. They are working up so nicely in the lovely Yarn Pirate colorway!

Should I pack something else as well? ;)

Looks like you are covered! Man you are knitting Cherie fast! :P

Oh & that noro sweater is just lovely!!

  7. Dorothy Bon 08 Nov 2006 at 9:01 pm

Cherie is looking beautiful. It still makes me laugh how many KAL’s one sweater can be used in.

Sounds like all the travel time will require a nice big bag of yarn.

  8. gleekon 08 Nov 2006 at 9:14 pm

sounds like you’ve got it all in hand! i hope that all my veggie recommendations come in handy :) and you’re gonna love artfibers for sure.

by the way, love the noro sweater. it sort of reminds me of the somewhat cowl but with set-in sleeves. the front drape is especially pleasing.

If you need more motivation, I think there’s another knit along for sweaters for November, but they are for 50,000 stitches. See Lime N Violet.

Cherie looks awesome! Yarn, pack yarn? What excuse will you have for buying more?! Have fun!

  12. gray la granon 08 Nov 2006 at 10:18 pm

i’m the worst when packing for trips. actually, i often leave clothes, etc, at home, so there’s plenty of room in my bags for knitting. and i ALWAYS overpack in that dept. like, i can actually knit a sweater, 4 socks, a lace shawl, and a hat on a four day trip!
the sisik is so pretty! i can’t wait to see you modeling the sweater, as i think you will be finished soon, unless you fall off the wagon into the arms of some noro ;)

Have a wonderful trip! I love the red tweed sweater. What a great color for you.

Three projects sounds about right. I always pack way too many books when I travel. Cause what if I don’t like one?

Can’t wait to hear about your travels.

  14. moiraeon 08 Nov 2006 at 11:21 pm

pls disregard my earlier and totally idiotic comment. apparently you knew all about the knit along.

  15. Coleenon 08 Nov 2006 at 11:47 pm

    Have a great vacation Lolly!!

red tweed! its looking wonderful! yap, the dilemma of the knitting on the trip. I find small items to work best- so I can have room for all the stuff I’ll bring back with me!

Have an amazing trip! I wish San Fran wasn’t quite so far away from me, cuz I would surely come up to meet you.

  18. claudineon 09 Nov 2006 at 3:25 am

How about packing some clothes too?? ;) Have fun in California!

  19. LaurieMon 09 Nov 2006 at 6:14 am

I dunno. I think you’ve got it covered! Besides, if you don’t, it’s just an excuse to buy more yarn. :-)

  20. stinkerbellon 09 Nov 2006 at 6:34 am

I love both of those projects.
I am currently torn between ignoring my Lara (Debbie Bliss Alpaca Silk pattern) and starting a Somewhat Cowl that reminds me of Kolsva… Will see if I get anywhere :)
    Have a wonderful trip.

    Hi Lolly,

I had to comment because I went to the Yarn Pirate site from your link in this post and she had some new yarn up – I bought one skein of her Wool/Tencel blend in the Hydrangea colorway. I need more sock yarn like you know what, but the colors are great looking.

Glad you had fun at Stitches. See you at Sheep & Wool.

GORGEOUS color on that Sisik! And the Noro as well – the Kolsva will be lovely!

And what are the odds of 2 DC-area knitters being married to men named Kris? =)

  23. Staceyon 09 Nov 2006 at 8:36 am

You and the creative post titles… :)

Have a great trip and it sounds like you packed just enough! A little bit of everything and nothing too challenging to tax your vacation mind!

  24. potikareon 09 Nov 2006 at 8:37 am

    wow, you are brave;)

  25. hillaryon 09 Nov 2006 at 8:47 am

Your packing list sounds great and very complete. I really love the look of that tweedy yarn and I can’t wait to see it all finished.

  26. Danaon 09 Nov 2006 at 9:01 am

have a great trip! i can’t wait to hear all about wine country.

  27. Traceyon 09 Nov 2006 at 9:03 am

Chocolate, you should definately bring chocolate. It’s the perfect knit/travel companion.

  28. fawnon 09 Nov 2006 at 9:40 am

Slobber, that’s the Rowan Vintage Knits book! …drool, slobber… I can’t wait to see how Cherie comes out. But don’t do *too* much knitting on this trip – leave plenty of time for sight-seeing and wine-tasting, too!

  29. Saunon 09 Nov 2006 at 9:51 am

That sounds like more than enough to keep you busy. Have fun in California. I can’t wait to see your pictures when you get back.

  30. Jennaon 09 Nov 2006 at 9:59 am

You guys are going to have such a great time. I’m so jealous!! Don’t forget to go to the Sutro baths and Amoeba music on Haight Street.

You’re making good progress on Cherie, you may how up my doubts after all. I hope you prove me wrong, because I think she will be a great December sweater for you. So pretty and classic.

    Don’t forget to pack Kris.

  31. primitivespiriton 09 Nov 2006 at 10:17 am

Lolly, have a wonderful trip, I wish that you were coming up to Eugene, OR! I would love to meet you. I would take another project possibility with me to make sure I had enough to pick from. What if I didn’t want to work on one? Then I would have the others there ready to go. I like to have something challenging, something easy, something exciting, a variety…. And then there is always what you pick up on the trip! I just got back from a trip to Seattle via train and I loved it, knitted my heart out. It is SO fun! Have a great time, Karen

  32. Wandaon 09 Nov 2006 at 10:28 am

Of course you should bring an extra project! All knitters bring more than they can possibly knit on. You’ll probably have Cherie finished or close enough. Hope you and Kris have a great time and can’t wait to hear about your trip.

  33. Marisolon 09 Nov 2006 at 1:27 pm

Wow Lolly, that sweater looks beautiful!!! I love the colors and I’m sure it will look lovely on you! Also, glad to hear you are coming out to California. Hey maybe you can drop me a line if you are going to be in San Francisco. Maybe I can come out and meet you in person.

  34. Deliaon 09 Nov 2006 at 1:35 pm

Where is your first stop in CA? It’s so freaking nice here right now – hope you enjoy your trip!

  35. Debon 09 Nov 2006 at 2:00 pm

Cherie is looking gorgeous! Such a beautiful color and classic design. Those always end up being my faves. Can’t wait to see more of both of your current projects. Have fun in California. Sounds like a great time!

  36. Isabelleon 15 Nov 2006 at 1:17 pm

Beautiful color for your Cherie! And that reminds me of the Somewhat Cowl – only an elegant version of it and with sleeves… Boy, was I slim not so long ago… :-/

BTW, how are you doing on your fitness/nutrition plan?
I try to follow your steps but each time I lose the weight I get it back quickly… Aaargh! :-(
