Project Spectrum 2.0: The Official Word

Published by lolly at 8:45 am under Conscious Crafting,Project Spectrum

After seeing your suggestions, and mulling it over a bit on my own, I have come up with the list for this year’s Project Spectrum.

Starting this February – as in FOUR WEEKS from today! – we will embark on another exploration of the color wheel. This time, there will be more “wiggle room”; with each two month span there will be THREE colors or groups. This means that you can choose one of the colors and immerse yourself in it for two whole months, or you can use all three in your creative process.

February / March
Blue, White, Gray

April / May
Green, Yellow, Pink

June / July
Red, Black, Metallics

August / September
Brown, Orange, Purple

The color triads were picked randomly and fell in this nice little order. Three colors a month gives all of us more latitude and more room to explore. Of note: the addition of the “Metallics” category in June / July. This is the perfect time to work with the golds, silvers, coppers, etc. that are in your various craft stashes. I am thinking that this may be the perfect way to use those silver beads I got as a birthday gift…

The general inspiration is the same as the first incarnation of Project Spectrum. Creative expressions of all kinds are welcomed and highly encouraged. Bust out of your crafty routine and challenge yourself to see colors in a different way! If this means dipping into a new craft, or simply seeing your own craft through a different lens, Project Spectrum is the impetus you need!

Just for a little rundown and review of WHAT Project Spectrum is for the newcomers (a rehashing of last year’s post on the topic with a few new highlights):

Colors inspire. Colors elicit deep emotions and memories. Colors symbolize life events and the changing of the seasons. We surround ourselves with color – in our homes, in our gardens, and even on our dinner plate. The idea of Project Spectrum is simply a celebration of the colors around us, and taking the time to notice them. Participants can dye, crochet, weave, decoupage, spin, build, stitch, knit, paint, scrapbook, construct, sew, quilt, cook, grow, collage, photograph, bake, or bead items in that color group (of course all arts and crafts that I missed are totally welcome as well!).

It is really about expressing yourself creatively – making something beautiful, and creating something unique with your hands. It is also about thinking outside of the box – perhaps taking up a new hobby, or a long neglected one, or finally dabbling in design.

You can choose to make one thing out of the designated color(s) in the two-month span – or twenty things! This is a no-pressure project. You can simply make a photo essay – you carry around your camera with you and post pictures of the color objects you see throughout your daily travels.

Projects can be big or small – whether you plan to tile your kitchen or photograph a blooming tree in your backyard – it is not a race, it is just about sharing your creative work to inspire others and express your spirit!

You do not have to have a blog to participate. If you would like to share your work with others, think about joining the Project Spectrum Flickr Group! You simply have to have a passion for creating and expressing yourself through your work, and encouraging others to do the same. This is a create-along! It can easily work with any crafty obligations you may have – whether they are swaps, planned gifts, etc.

Project Spectrum is about expression and creating beauty with all of the colors of the rainbow – and there are millions of ways to do that! Let’s discover them together!

There you have it – a new adventure in the making!

In the coming days, I will post about what I am planning to do during the Project Spectrum span, as well as inspirational photographs and crafts that get me thinking about all of the colors of the rainbow! Please let me know what you think of the color combos, and join the Flickr discussion about what you are planning for this round! Also, grab one of the trusty Project Spectrum buttons, and tell your friends! Stay tuned – This is going to be great ;)

I am so excited! Thanks for organizing PS 2.0. Can’t wait to see all the fun things that everyone creates.

  2. Aviceon 04 Jan 2007 at 9:09 am

Like the new approach! This fits with my just-formed plan to make an inventory of the ever-growing stash and to match yarn with ideas for knitting projects — an inventory and reorganization that started out as a way of making room for my mother who’s comging to stay for two weeks…

  3. AmyDeon 04 Jan 2007 at 9:40 am

I joined – thanks! In fact I joined twice once mistakingly with AmyDE instead of AmyDe. Oops! I’m cleaning out my stash and craftroom this month so it’s perfect timing to get my projects in order by color. Thanks for hosting!

  4. AmyPon 04 Jan 2007 at 9:50 am

I’ve just signed up. I didn’t do the first round, but I’m really looking forward to round two.

  5. Amandaon 04 Jan 2007 at 9:50 am

Last year’s Project Spectrum was awesome, even though I didn’t participate. I can only imagine that PS 2.0 will be even bigger and better, and you can bet that I’m in for this year!

  6. Amyon 04 Jan 2007 at 9:57 am

    Sounds great! So many possibilities…

  7. ericaon 04 Jan 2007 at 10:23 am

This is great. It will work so well with my knitting almanac that I’m planning for this year.

  8. Jennon 04 Jan 2007 at 10:25 am

Lolly! How did you know that I just ordered baby blue yarn for “A Cardigan for Arwen.” you’re very perceptive! ;)

  9. Lauraon 04 Jan 2007 at 10:27 am

OK so.. this year I am officially joining!
I think I am going to use the color choices for spinning, because I’d like to get enough of a few different yarns that I have spun to perhaps make a sweater or some garment type thing. :)

  10. heatheron 04 Jan 2007 at 10:29 am

    I’m in!

  11. Jennaon 04 Jan 2007 at 10:38 am

Oh boy, I think it will be so great to see these wonderful groupings of color together. I hope thi Project is bigger and better than last year’s. Did you see that you got an award for it on the JenLa blog awards? Quite an honor.

  12. iselon 04 Jan 2007 at 10:40 am

    Round 2. Bring it on!

  13. taraon 04 Jan 2007 at 10:44 am

    Hoorah! PS rides again!
This lines up perfectly with my plans to crochet a blanket with all my blue leftovers…I think I’ll wait to cast on until Feb 1rst!

  14. Beeon 04 Jan 2007 at 10:46 am

Yay, let’s hear it for PS 2.0!!! Thanks for putting this together…this will definitely keep inspired and busy over the next several months.

  15. shadkittyon 04 Jan 2007 at 11:04 am

Seems a lot of us are organizing the stash this year! :)

Is it cheating if I already started a blue projet? Or if we mix colors from other months?

  16. Staceyon 04 Jan 2007 at 11:07 am

love how the new groupings came out – especially since I have blue yarn to use for my next sweater!

  17. moirae/Stephon 04 Jan 2007 at 11:08 am

This will be so much fun!

I don’t remember whether you had the easy sign up form for Socktoberfest, but it rocks.

  18. Kathyon 04 Jan 2007 at 11:10 am

Wow, girl, you are really a glutton for punishment! This year’s PS will probably be bigger than last year’s edition.

I’m not joining this year – I am being an anarchist in 2007. :)

  19. Bethon 04 Jan 2007 at 11:11 am

Looking forward to it this time around since I didn’t play last year.

  20. Caroleon 04 Jan 2007 at 11:21 am

Hooray for a new project spectrum. I think I’ll try fair isle in one of those color combos. Thanks for the inspiration, Lolly.

    Thanks for organizing Lolly!

  26. Rebeccaon 04 Jan 2007 at 11:49 am

Awesome idea with more than one color at a time! Can’t wait to start! I have some felted house slippers planned in a blue & gray handpaint that is PERFECT for P. S. Thanks for hosting it again.

    Rebecca

  27. chrison 04 Jan 2007 at 11:49 am

I so wish I were better at “alongs” . . . sigh. But if I sign up, it’s pretty much a surefire guarantee that the colors I *want* to work with will be the exact opposite from the project’s. Maybe I’ll just skulk-along and not actually sign up, thus freeing me to color-along with you. Revere psychology at its best!

  28. Mintyfreshon 04 Jan 2007 at 12:04 pm

Lolly, you’re amazing. Great solutions to the nagging problem of how to structure PS2.0. Thanks for being our tireless organizer; it’s going to be so much fun!

  29. Dorothy Bon 04 Jan 2007 at 12:07 pm

Awesome changes. I am really looking forward to participating this time around!

Now, I have an excuse to stock up on some colours.

  30. Monaon 04 Jan 2007 at 12:10 pm

    Hallo Lolly,

ich wuensche Dir ein frohes neues Jahr!!

*sigh* I don’t want to open Pandora’s box by saying it won’t amount to anything, but I will try again – Project Spectrum is just such a good idea. “you can always get it right next time” as the Barenaked Ladies say.

  31. Amy Boogieon 04 Jan 2007 at 12:17 pm

    YAY!!!
    You rock!

  32. Susanon 04 Jan 2007 at 12:26 pm

Hooooray!!!! I’m doing this again as you are my inspiration of PS!

  33. Poppinson 04 Jan 2007 at 12:26 pm

Lolly, I’m in. Or should I say “we’re in”?

I’m signing up along with my kids. I’m going to make it a bit of a homeschooling thing. A way to provide a creative focus to our arts and crafts time. I’m really hoping it will inspire all of us to think and create outside of the box and be a neat way to enjoy eachother’s company.

I’m going to be reading Project Spectrum-appropriate books to them, although I’m sure it will take some creative rummaging through our bookshelves and those of the library to find them.

I can’t wait! Thanks for mothering this gorgeous brainchild.

  34. jokoon 04 Jan 2007 at 12:32 pm

    great! i´m in!

  35. Sarahon 04 Jan 2007 at 12:59 pm

I’m so excited! I’ve been trying to plan out my ‘new year’ project post, so this will be just the organizing I need :)

  36. Tamion 04 Jan 2007 at 1:01 pm

    Looks great!
I like having three colors to choose from.
Extending it to two months works for me.
I found that one month just wasnt long enough for the projects I had planned last time.

  37. [...] As for spinning goals: I’d just like to get more consistent and continue to improve and just really enjoy having a wheel. I’d like to spin enough of a fiber (or fibers) to knit myself a sweater.  (One of those listed above would be awesome.) I’d like to keep spinning and knitting both and not let spinning overtake knitting. (I have joined Project Spectrum for this year and plan to use the color/month combinations to determine what I spin.  Otherwise, I might just quit knitting altogether and spin. It’s just so… soothing.) [...]

  38. emmaon 04 Jan 2007 at 1:25 pm

I can’t wait to get started now. I love the 3 colors and 2 months combination. Will there be a button for us to put on our blogs by any chance?

  39. Sherion 04 Jan 2007 at 1:28 pm

I just signed up and I can’t wait to start. I had so much fun last time. Thanks Lolly!

  40. Bridgeton 04 Jan 2007 at 1:29 pm

Why do you have to “sign up” if it’s a no pressure project? I’m not trying to be a naysayer, but I’m just confused!

  41. lollyon 04 Jan 2007 at 1:33 pm

Bridget: Thanks for asking! My thoughts behind the signups are that people can share their website / blog and others can click on it in the master list. Since sharing your crafts and inspirations is one of the key points in Project Spectrum, many people want to share their work through a blog, or through a photo service like Flickr. Of course, this is not required at all! You can always participate without actually signing up!
Also, it keeps tally of how many people are interested and willing to be a part of it.

    Best wishes,
    Lolly

[...] Oh, yay! I’ve signed up for Project Spectrum 2.0! I’m really excited, & the two months span means that I’m actually going to be able to do something each time! I’ve signed up for two many swaps & I have a lot of school work right now so there’s not much time to craft, but hopefully it’ll calm down soon. This semester, that starts on January 15th, I’m only taking one class which means that I will have more spare time. [...]

Please say you’ll do the postcard swap again! I wasn’t able to do it last time, but would love to participate in PS 2.0!

  47. Helmison 04 Jan 2007 at 2:40 pm

    I’m in, again!!

  48. maryseon 04 Jan 2007 at 2:45 pm

excellent — i’m also pleased with the symmetry of having 3 colors for june and july as well. yes i’m a dork, and having only red and black for june and july was freaking me out a bit.

i’ll see what i can do about making new monthly buttons too.

    let the games begin!

  49. Maritzaon 04 Jan 2007 at 2:48 pm

Yay! I signed on! So looking forward to this. Also, Lolly, I tried to email you re: green socks, but the email bounced back to me – twice. Weird. Anyway, get in touch with me if you get a chance.

Oh, hooray! And let me say that the three-color/two month approach? Brilliant. Because the neutrals kinda bored me by themselves, but paired with other colors? Fun! And I love the inclusion of metallics.

The year’s resolution: actually POST the pictures of the my Project Spectrum contributions!

Dir noch ein gutes und gesundes neues Jahr 2007
    Bettina

  57. katieon 04 Jan 2007 at 6:15 pm

Yay! As many ideas as I can think of for new projects, I think I really ought to use the Project Spectrum colors to focus on finishing up some old ones. I shouldn’t have any problem finding enough colors already in progress!

  58. Margoton 04 Jan 2007 at 6:20 pm

Hi Lolly! I love the two month windows for each color group. I had oruble keeping up one month at a time, and once I got behind, it was hard to get caught up – in fact, I don’t think I did!

Thanks for organizing the KAL – you’re a great host and it’s so much fun. HNY!

  59. Jenniferon 04 Jan 2007 at 6:36 pm

Lolly – you’re the best. Thanks for taking on this immense and inspiring project for a second year. It’s really fun to have a reason to knit outside our normal color range. This will be so much fun. Now I just have to manage this while complying with the “Knit From Your Stash 2007″ rules (Not to worry – it won’t be difficult!) Happy knitting!

Hi all! I do papercrafts & like to join PS2, it sounds really fun! I’m new to such exchange though, hope Lolly or anyone here can help?…do I’ve to submit a project with any colour, combi of colours or 1 project for each colour of that month? The project cannot contain any colour outside that specified for that month? What happens if we join but fail to submit any project? Are there any links to view PS1 submissions for an idea of how this works? Thanks lots!

so excited for this Lolly!! thank you!

  78. Poppinson 05 Jan 2007 at 9:44 am

It’s quite amazing that the order managed to end up with wintry colours followed by spring colours (green, pink and yellow practically scream ‘tulips’ at me) and some wonderful fall colours. That’s going to help me get in the spirit.

  79. lollyon 05 Jan 2007 at 10:07 am

Poppins: in full disclosure, I chose one color for each two-month span, and then the others fell randomly, as I assigned a number to each color and used a generator to match them up. But it did work out quite nicely according to the northern hemisphere seasons, didn’t it? :)

    Best,
    Lolly

[...] I’ve found something else that I intend to participate in this year.  Basically, the requirements are just to enjoy color.  To quote the organizer, “Project Spectrum is about expression and creating beauty with all of the colors of the rainbow – and there are millions of ways to do that!”  This requires more thought for me than just a knitalong, but it seems interesting.  I tend to gravitate to certain color families, so this might make me branch out a little more in my crafting.  I think, for starters anyway, I’m going to immerse myself in the colors by taking photos of things I see around.  I will post the pictures each week on Friday, so you can see what I see.  If anything, this will make me more aware of the world around me in full color, not just what people (advertisers) want you to see.   It will be interesting to see how this evolves and how different people interpret each color.  We start with blue, white and gray through March.  Should be easy to find those colors in NW Pennsylvania- atleast in nature.    Check back for updates- this starts February 1! [...]

“it’s fun to have fun, but you have to know how!” -Dr. Seuss

I’m looking forward to this community of color. I am a librarian & artist and love all things spectral. All of my yarn is cram-pack smashed into about 30 handle-top clear plastic boxes stacked up in one closet — and I must stress that it is all “chromologically” organized.

What fun this will be to rediscover different color boxes each few months!

[...] I’m also starting to think about bringing back some sheep to my shop. Particularly, Lolly’s Project Spectrum has got me thinking about Sheep Club, round II. I’m fiddling around with a few ideas (including creating some markers that aren’t sheep shaped? maybe?) The main question is how I should incorporate the three-color groupings. Sell sets of three markers in the three colors? One marker every other month that uses all three colors? I kind of like keeping the sets small so that the club is affordable (joining the club for 4 markers would cost around $20, joining a club with 12 markers could cost as much as $60). But I also have some fun ideas for the larger set. So, potential customers and folks who spend generously on knitting paraphanalia, what do you think? [...]

[...] Anyway, joining, that’s what I was talking about. I’ve joined a few more things. I’ve already mentioned Project Spectrum 2.0. It starts today. The first triad of colors are blue, white and gray. That’s pretty much the colors of my blog already so I won’t be making in changes there yet. WordPress makes it easy to quickly alter the look and colors of your blog so latter on I will be using that feature to keep things matching the Spectrum colors. I’ve been trying to figure out how I’m going to really use the colors. Well, now I’ve got something, I joined another project. This one is an effort to get all of the patterns from the Barbara Walker Treasuries knit up and photographed in color. It’s called the Walker Treasury Project. Want to knit a swatch or twelve? Join up, there’s plenty to go around. My plan is to knit all of my swatches in the current Project Spectrum colors. I’m going to purchase similar weight yarn (probably dk or worsted) in the various colors. Once I’m done (or done enough) I’ll start putting the swatches together into a blanket. It will, no doubt be a crazy looking concontion, but what the heck. I bet I’ll have fun doing it. [...]
