Project Spectrum 2.0: The Official Word
After seeing your suggestions, and mulling it over a bit on my own, I have come up with the list for this year’s Project Spectrum.
Starting this February - as in FOUR WEEKS from today! - we will embark on another exploration of the color wheel. This time, there will be more “wiggle room”; with each two month span there will be THREE colors or groups. This means that you can choose one of the colors and immerse yourself in it for two whole months, or you can use all three in your creative process.

February / March
Blue, White, Gray
April / May
Green, Yellow, Pink
June / July
Red, Black, Metallics
August / September
Brown, Orange, Purple
The color triads were picked randomly and fell in this nice little order. Three colors a month gives all of us more latitude and more room to explore. Of note: the addition of the “Metallics” category in June / July. This is the perfect time to work with the golds, silvers, coppers, etc. that are in your various craft stashes. I am thinking that this may be the perfect way to use those silver beads I got as a birthday gift…
The general inspiration is the same as the first incarnation of Project Spectrum. Creative expressions of all kinds are welcomed and highly encouraged. Bust out of your crafty routine and challenge yourself to see colors in a different way! If this means dipping into a new craft, or simply seeing your own craft through a different lens, Project Spectrum is the impetus you need!
Just for a little rundown and review of WHAT Project Spectrum is for the newcomers (a rehashing of last year’s post on the topic with a few new highlights):
Colors inspire. Colors elicit deep emotions and memories. Colors symbolize life events and the changing of the seasons. We surround ourselves with color - in our homes, in our gardens, and even on our dinner plate. The idea of Project Spectrum is simply a celebration of the colors around us, and taking the time to notice them. Participants can dye, crochet, weave, decoupage, spin, build, stitch, knit, paint, scrapbook, construct, sew, quilt, cook, grow, collage, photograph, bake, or bead items in that color group (of course all arts and crafts that I missed are totally welcome as well!).
It is really about expressing yourself creatively - making something beautiful, and creating something unique with your hands. It is also about thinking outside of the box - perhaps taking up a new hobby, or a long neglected one, or finally dabbling in design.
You can choose to make one thing out of the designated color(s) in the two-month span - or twenty things! This is a no-pressure project. You can simply make a photo essay - you carry around your camera with you and post pictures of the color objects you see throughout your daily travels.
Projects can be big or small - whether you plan to tile your kitchen or photograph a blooming tree in your backyard - it is not a race, it is just about sharing your creative work to inspire others and express your spirit!
You do not have to have a blog to participate. If you would like to share your work with others, think about joining the Project Spectrum Flickr Group! You simply have to have a passion for creating and expressing yourself through your work, and encouraging others to do the same. This is a create-along! It can easily work with any crafty obligations you may have - whether they are swaps, planned gifts, etc.
Project Spectrum is about expression and creating beauty with all of the colors of the rainbow - and there are millions of ways to do that! Let’s discover them together!
There you have it - a new adventure in the making!
In the coming days, I will post about what I am planning to do during the Project Spectrum span, as well as inspirational photographs and crafts that get me thinking about all of the colors of the rainbow! Please let me know what you think of the color combos, and join the Flickr discussion about what you are planning for this round! Also, grab one of the trusty Project Spectrum buttons, and tell your friends! Stay tuned - This is going to be great

I am so excited! Thanks for organizing PS 2.0. Can’t wait to see all the fun things that everyone creates.
Like the new approach! This fits with my just-formed plan to make an inventory of the ever-growing stash and to match yarn with ideas for knitting projects — an inventory and reorganization that started out as a way of making room for my mother who’s comging to stay for two weeks…
I joined - thanks! In fact I joined twice once mistakingly with AmyDE instead of AmyDe. Oops! I’m cleaning out my stash and craftroom this month so it’s perfect timing to get my projects in order by color. Thanks for hosting!
I’ve just signed up. I didn’t do the first round, but I’m really looking forward to round two.
Last year’s Project Spectrum was awesome, even though I didn’t participate. I can only imagine that PS 2.0 will be even bigger and better, and you can bet that I’m in for this year!
Sounds great! So many possibilities…
This is great. It will work so well with my knitting almanac that I’m planning for this year.
Lolly! How did you know that I just ordered baby blue yarn for “A Cardigan for Arwen.” you’re very perceptive!
OK so.. this year I am officially joining!
I think I am going to use the color choices for spinning, because I’d like to get enough of a few different yarns that I have spun to perhaps make a sweater or some garment type thing.
I’m in!
Oh boy, I think it will be so great to see these wonderful groupings of color together. I hope thi Project is bigger and better than last year’s. Did you see that you got an award for it on the JenLa blog awards? Quite an honor.
Round 2. Bring it on!
Hoorah! PS rides again!
This lines up perfectly with my plans to crochet a blanket with all my blue leftovers…I think I’ll wait to cast on until Feb 1rst!
Yay, let’s hear it for PS 2.0!!! Thanks for putting this together…this will definitely keep inspired and busy over the next several months.
Seems a lot of us are organizing the stash this year!
Is it cheating if I already started a blue projet? Or if we mix colors from other months?
love how the new groupings came out - especially since I have blue yarn to use for my next sweater!
This will be so much fun!
I don’t remember whether you had the easy sign up form for Socktoberfest, but it rocks.
Wow, girl, you are really a glutton for punishment! This year’s PS will probably be bigger than last year’s edition.
I’m not joining this year - I am being an anarchist in 2007.
Looking forward to it this time around since I didn’t play last year.
Hooray for a new project spectrum. I think I’ll try fair isle in one of those color combos. Thanks for the inspiration, Lolly.
YEY! YEY! YEY! Thank YOU, Lolly! You’re a fabulous hostess and I just love the creative itch that Project Spectrum provides!!! Did I say YEY? Well, here’s some more: YEY!
yay for P.S! I signed up both Blacksheep and Blatherskite. I want to do some photography stuff and will post that on Blatherskite. And I decided to repost my knitting stuff on Blacksheep
Yay! Signed up, and already planning!
Looking forward to my first Project Spectrum Lolly!
I didn’t participate last year but was so inspired by everyone else’s work, I am looking forward to joining in on the fun this time around!
Thanks for organizing Lolly!
Awesome idea with more than one color at a time! Can’t wait to start! I have some felted house slippers planned in a blue & gray handpaint that is PERFECT for P. S. Thanks for hosting it again.
Rebecca
I so wish I were better at “alongs” . . . sigh. But if I sign up, it’s pretty much a surefire guarantee that the colors I *want* to work with will be the exact opposite from the project’s. Maybe I’ll just skulk-along and not actually sign up, thus freeing me to color-along with you. Revere psychology at its best!
Lolly, you’re amazing. Great solutions to the nagging problem of how to structure PS2.0. Thanks for being our tireless organizer; it’s going to be so much fun!
Awesome changes. I am really looking forward to participating this time around!
Now, I have an excuse to stock up on some colours.
Hallo Lolly,
ich wuensche Dir ein frohes neues Jahr!!
*sigh* I don’t want to open Pandora’s box by saying it won’t amount to anything, but I will try again - Project Spectrum is just such a good idea. “you can always get it right next time” as the Barenaked Ladies say.
YAY!!!
You rock!
Hooooray!!!! I’m doing this again as you are my inspiration of PS!
Lolly, I’m in. Or should I say “we’re in”?
I’m signing up along with my kids. I’m going to make it a bit of a homeschooling thing. A way to provide a creative focus to our arts and crafts time. I’m really hoping it will inspire all of us to think and create outside of the box and be a neat way to enjoy eachother’s company.
I’m going to be reading Project Spectrum-appropriate books to them, although I’m sure it will take some creative rummaging through our bookshelves and those of the library to find them.
I can’t wait! Thanks for mothering this gorgeous brainchild.
great! i´m in!
I’m so excited! I’ve been trying to plan out my ‘new year’ project post, so this will be just the organizing I need
Looks great!
I like having three colors to choose from.
Extending it to two months works for me.
I found that one month just wasnt long enough for the projects I had planned last time.
[...] As for spinning goals: I’d just like to get more consistent and continue to improve and just really enjoy having a wheel. I’d like to spin enough of a fiber (or fibers) to knit myself a sweater. (One of those listed above would be awesome.) I’d like to keep spinning and knitting both and not let spinning overtake knitting. (I have joined Project Spectrum for this year and plan to use the color/month combinations to determine what I spin. Otherwise, I might just quit knitting altogether and spin. It’s just so… soothing.) [...]
I can’t wait to get started now. I love the 3 colors and 2 months combination. Will there be a button for us to put on our blogs by any chance?
I just signed up and I can’t wait to start. I had so much fun last time. Thanks Lolly!
Why do you have to “sign up” if it’s a no pressure project? I’m not trying to be a naysayer, but I’m just confused!
Bridget: Thanks for asking! My thoughts behind the signups are that people can share their website / blog and others can click on it in the master list. Since sharing your crafts and inspirations is one of the key points in Project Spectrum, many people want to share their work through a blog, or through a photo service like Flickr. Of course, this is not required at all! You can always participate without actually signing up!
Also, it keeps tally of how many people are interested and willing to be a part of it.
Best wishes,
Lolly
[...] Oh, yay! I’ve signed up for Project Spectrum 2.0! I’m really excited, & the two months span means that I’m actually going to be able to do something each time! I’ve signed up for two many swaps & I have a lot of school work right now so there’s not much time to craft, but hopefully it’ll calm down soon. This semester, that starts on January 15th, I’m only taking one class which means that I will have more spare time. [...]
Sounds fun (again)!
Yeah! I´m in!!
I’m excited! I’ve got some great ideas and this year will definietly be indulging in my other crafting interests!
Please say you’ll do the postcard swap again! I wasn’t able to do it last time, but would love to participate in PS 2.0!
I’m in, again!!
excellent — i’m also pleased with the symmetry of having 3 colors for june and july as well. yes i’m a dork, and having only red and black for june and july was freaking me out a bit.
i’ll see what i can do about making new monthly buttons too.
let the games begin!
Yay! I signed on! So looking forward to this. Also, Lolly, I tried to email you re: green socks, but the email bounced back to me - twice. Weird. Anyway, get in touch with me if you get a chance.
I’m in! Project Spectrum is a great idea! So I’ll promise at least try…;)
ohhhh I’m liking the more than one colour deal! Sounds good!
Yay! I’m in. Thanks for organizing, Lolly!
Oh, hooray! And let me say that the three-color/two month approach? Brilliant. Because the neutrals kinda bored me by themselves, but paired with other colors? Fun! And I love the inclusion of metallics.
The year’s resolution: actually POST the pictures of the my Project Spectrum contributions!
Yay for P.S.! Thanks for organizing it again, Lolly!
Great, I’m in! I like the new set-up, good idea!
Hallo Lolly
Würde mich auch wieder gerne dazu anmelden, war ja beim letzten mal auch dabei und es hat sehr viel Spass gemacht.
Dir noch ein gutes und gesundes neues Jahr 2007
Bettina
Yay! As many ideas as I can think of for new projects, I think I really ought to use the Project Spectrum colors to focus on finishing up some old ones. I shouldn’t have any problem finding enough colors already in progress!
Hi Lolly! I love the two month windows for each color group. I had oruble keeping up one month at a time, and once I got behind, it was hard to get caught up - in fact, I don’t think I did!
Thanks for organizing the KAL - you’re a great host and it’s so much fun. HNY!
Lolly - you’re the best. Thanks for taking on this immense and inspiring project for a second year. It’s really fun to have a reason to knit outside our normal color range. This will be so much fun. Now I just have to manage this while complying with the “Knit From Your Stash 2007″ rules (Not to worry - it won’t be difficult!) Happy knitting!
[...] Lolly has just posted the plans for Project Specturum 2.0 – this year’s approach has opened a totally different way of looking at colors. Time to start planning the projects – knit and otherwise. I had projects I wanted to accomplish in ‘06 which were pushed to the back burner once I started traveling for work. [...]
hurray for 2.0! i was wondering how you would mix it up a bit for the second round. i hope i’ll have a bit more time to dedicate to the projects this time around. i think the two month increments will help!
Yay! This is really going to help me clean up my WIP’s & stash bust! Thanks Lolly!!!
Eff Yeah!
I love the triads!!!!
great combos! stash oh stash, here I come!

I’m in! I love colours… think this will be fun! I missed it last time, so thanks for organizing it again, Lolly!
Brilliant sign up program you have there! Nice work.
Looking forward to this!!
HIh hII, I´m in too… This will be fun:)
I came across a link to Project Spectrum while checking out another blog! Very inspiring and I’m excited to participate!
Hi all! I do papercrafts & like to join PS2, it sounds really fun! I’m new to such exchange though, hope Lolly or anyone here can help?…do I’ve to submit a project with any colour, combi of colours or 1 project for each colour of that month? The project cannot contain any colour outside that specified for that month? What happens if we join but fail to submit any project? Are there any links to view PS1 submissions for an idea of how this works? Thanks lots!
i am in too, but i not write english! so….
Hi all, I could not resist to register. I am so keen on starting next month. I think I will do at least a little something to every colour. The results of my first brainstorming can be found here: http://wolleundich.blogspot.com/2007/01/project-spectrum.html
Don’t worry, it’s bilingual (and sorry for all the bad mistakes I made)
Greetings,
Jinx
Can’t wait! Interesting that the sign up list includes several “Viagra” participants . . . I guess everyone wants to join in the fun
wow - so many signed up already!!
Thanks for project spectrum Lolly!!! =)
I’m in!
Happy Anniversary!!!!!
Dad
I completely missed out on this last year and was so jealous of all the participants as I saw them showing off their stuff. This year, I’m in. Thanks for coordinating it!
so excited for this Lolly!! thank you!
It’s quite amazing that the order managed to end up with wintry colours followed by spring colours (green, pink and yellow practically scream ‘tulips’ at me) and some wonderful fall colours. That’s going to help me get in the spirit.
Poppins: in full disclosure, I chose one color for each two-month span, and then the others fell randomly, as I assigned a number to each color and used a generator to match them up. But it did work out quite nicely according to the northern hemisphere seasons, didn’t it?
Best,
Lolly
I’m in for another year! Thanks for making this fun and interesting Lolly!
I am looking forward to this years Project Spectrum Lolly! Thanks!
Glad to hear you are feeling better!
[...] I’ve found something else that I intend to participate in this year. Basically, the requirements are just to enjoy color. To quote the organizer, “Project Spectrum is about expression and creating beauty with all of the colors of the rainbow - and there are millions of ways to do that!” This requires more thought for me than just a knitalong, but it seems interesting. I tend to gravitate to certain color families, so this might make me branch out a little more in my crafting. I think, for starters anyway, I’m going to immerse myself in the colors by taking photos of things I see around. I will post the pictures each week on Friday, so you can see what I see. If anything, this will make me more aware of the world around me in full color, not just what people (advertisers) want you to see. It will be interesting to see how this evolves and how different people interpret each color. We start with blue, white and gray through March. Should be easy to find those colors in NW Pennsylvania- atleast in nature. Check back for updates- this starts February 1! [...]
I didn’t sign up last year and regretted it - so here I am this year! :o)
Thanks for organizing this, Lolly. I can’t wait to see what everyone makes this year!
[...] To accomplish the first three items on this list, I’m joining in on Rebekah’s Yarn Focus Challenge and Friday Night Spinners. For the last item here, I’m thinking about Lolly’s Project Spectrum 2.0 (because I knit too slowly to make the project useful, but sewing might actually be doable.) But I’m still undecided, because I have a tendency to join things and then not finish them. (hmmm… maybe that’s another goal?) [...]
I am in. This is so exciting…
[...] Julia was telling me about her plans to join this online project called Project Spectrum 2.0. It seems like it’s geared towards knitters but it’s generic enough that others could participate also. I clicked on over and signed myself up! [...]
YAY, Project Spectrum is going to rock! I had to sign up again this year. You make it so much fun and with such freedom to express ourselves with color. Thank you!
Thanks for the invite at Flickr. I’m in!! x
Sounds absolutely inspirational - I would love to join!
yay! its going to be even more fun this time around
Great Idea. I did found you too late last year, so Im so IN this year.
[...] [...]
Please count me - the colour spectrum is a great idea
and i´m so happy to knit in these colours.
Greetings to you
Steffi
Sign me up! (It also gives me an excuse not to feel guilty about the unfinished grey bag/UFO lurking in the sewing basket).
Hello Lolly!
Project Spectrum is a great idea.
I’m in!
Can’t wait to start ;0)
Greetings,
Melanie
Please take me on your list. Last year I saw it too late, but this year I`m in time. And sorry for my horrible english.
Sounds fun, I’m in (but I can’t promise anything (= )
I’m in! Unfortunately I’m not the fastest knitter in the world but hopefully I get something done. That’s why it’s great that we have two months for each set of colors.
The colour spectrum is a great idea.
Thank you
Christa
[...] Zeskan blogista bongasin tämänvuoden Project Spectrumin ja päätin osallistua itsekin. Tänävuonna on jaettu 3 väriä per kaksi kuukautta, joten tällainen aloittelijakin ehkä onnistuu jotain rykäisemään kasaan Katsotaan kuin ämmän käy! [...]
I’m from Germany. My English is very bad. But I’m so excited and very happy - and I’m in!!!
“it’s fun to have fun, but you have to know how!” -Dr. Seuss
I’m looking forward to this community of color. I am a librarian & artist and love all things spectral. All of my yarn is cram-pack smashed into about 30 handle-top clear plastic boxes stacked up in one closet — and I must stress that it is all “chromologically” organized.
What fun this will be to rediscover different color boxes each few months!
I’m in. My english isn’t so good, but I hope you understand me. This is a great project!
I just signed up it sounds like so much fun! I really like that my birthday month June/July are my favourite colours together red, black and metallic (insert silver) :-D, so I probably will make something for myself. Two whole months to get things together is also a bonus.
This is a great idea! I don’t have much time but I will try to do atleast something.
[...] Lolly’s announced Project Spectrum 2.0! It starts February 1 and the colors are combined a bit differently. Also, each group of colors gets two months, so hopefully things will feel a little less frazzled. [...]
I’m in. Please take me on your list.
I’m from Finland and my english is bad, but I’ll try.
This will be fun, I think
I’m in, my english is not good, but i’ll try my best.
Thanks for organizing another round of PS! I didn’t get to join in the fun last year, but count me in this time.
[...] I’m also starting to think about bringing back some sheep to my shop. Particularly, Lolly’s Project Spectrum has got me thinking about Sheep Club, round II. I’m fiddling around with a few ideas (including creating some markers that aren’t sheep shaped? maybe?) The main question is how I should incorporate the three-color groupings. Sell sets of three markers in the three colors? One marker every other month that uses all three colors? I kind of like keeping the sets small so that the club is affordable (joining the club for 4 markers would cost around $20, joining a club with 12 markers could cost as much as $60). But I also have some fun ideas for the larger set. So, potential customers and folks who spend generously on knitting paraphanalia, what do you think? [...]
Sounds like fun, so I joined…
Hi,
it´s my frist time here. Now let´s see if i´m able to do the right colors at the right time. Sorry my blog is in german.
Have a good time!

Hooray!! I was waiting for this post. Please, please please do the postcard swap again.
I missed this one last time (saw it the last month of 1.0). I am sooooo looking forward to participating this time because I want the creative challenge!
[...] No, not that kind. I’m not brave enough for that yet. But I did sign up for both Project Spectrum and Knit From Your Stash 2007 so it’s color knitting of a sort. [...]
I missed out on the last one.
But excited for this one!!!!
You know, this all sounds like so much fun, but since I am the world’s biggest procrastinator it makes me the worst for joining something that goes on this long. However, it’s tempting because it combines more than just knitting, right? How long til the sign up for this ends? Project Spectrum could put me on the road to being more organized…
Hi I am excited about this years project spectrum.
When I signed up the link with my name on the members list won’t link back to me. I don’t know how to fix it.
I’m in!! Already have blue yarn to do an entralac scarf KAL for February.
[...] 12 Jan 2007 Friday … at last!! Posted by knotmaker under Life , Knitting , WIP This is the start of a little hoodie sweaterfor my friends little girl. I am using red heart yarn. This little sweater is going to be one of my PS February/March projects. I am also going to do my best to get more of the pesky socks (that I started almost a year ago) knit. I am hope that my involment with in socktopia is going to inspire me to finish the current pair of socks and move on to others!! [...]

[...] Saturday, January 13th, 2007 in Red Scarf Project by Priscilla Last week or so, Heather asked for ideas for future projects for this group, and when I answered her in the comments, Project Spectrum jumped into my head for a couple of reasons. I have enjoyed the entries everyone posted for last years Project Spectrum and I’m ticked to be involved this year!!!! Looking forward to it!

Can’t wait! I really want to join this time! I am excited!
[...] I have to say though, the prospect of all of the colorful food cooking creations for Project Spectrum has me excited (and quite hungry!) Do you like to get creative in the kitchen? There are no shortage of yummy foods that span the color spectrum. So many fresh veggies, fruits and herbs - you could literally eat the rainbow! And why not? Barring any food color additives, the general rule of thumb is: The more vibrant the color, the healthier it is. [...]
Ooh, I want to play this year!
[...] Yeah, I am so in! [...]
[...] It looks like I’m going to have a week off at the end of the month / beginning of February, just in time for the start of PROJECT SPECTRUM! Oooo, I wanted to join last round and didn’t, I’m so glad to get a second chance! I’m putting the green socks OTN into futurespace (they’ve been there a month anyway) and digging in my stash for something blue! I don’t have a blog but will enjoy seeing others’ blogs and photos. Thanks for doing this again!
It´s a really good idea. I´m in ;o)
I come whit too. I am from Finland and my english is not good. Mutta tulen mukaan.
New member here! I’m excited to get in on this one. : )
im newbie too
but i’m in!
I’m in!
Are you running the postcard swap this time?
I can´t believe what I´m reading here. Sounds really cool! I´m a native New Yorker living in Germany since ages (I´m still homesick) and now finally have a chance to “explode”. Please let me in!.. Uhhh… sign up… where?
Great idea! I saw this last time and I’d love to join in!
I seem to have registered twice though. My browser returned an error, and I thought it hadn’t gone through. Sorry.
[...] I discovered Illustration Friday through Amy at Creative Mom Podcast. I really like it, and not only have I joined that, but Project Spectrum and Refashion 07. The pages are nice and thick, the pocked in the back, the sturdy binding and covers make it a really great and different sort of journal. [...]
[...] I will have to see how it knits up. I am thinking to work on the afore mentioned socks as my first Project Spectrum 2.0 project. This should definitely qualify in the blue range. [...]
Oooops. I signed up twice!
I forgot and did it again. I couldn’t find a way (I’m sure there is a way, I just couldn’t find it!) to see the list, so I signed up again. You can delete one of me, if you would please! Thanks, Kathleen
[...] Thursday, January 25th, 2007 in Knitting I’ve decided to do Project Spectrum 2.0. I have such a tough time picking projects to start, and I start too many that I don’t finish, because I get distracted by something else. This will help me narrow down which projects to start at a given time, and hopefully motivate me to finish them within a designated time frame. [...]

[...] I signed up for Project Spectrum 2.0, have any of you ever done that? It looks very interesting to me. How do I describe this in a nutshell? You craft something - or many things - in any manner you like, be it painting, knitting, photography, etc…something in the color spectrum Lolly has chosen for the given timeframe. The February / March timeframe colors are Blue, White and Gray. Which fits in perfectly for my KAL sweater which is blue. I have no idea if I’ll knit something for each one or if maybe I’ll break out and do one of my other hobbies (like stained glass). We’ll see. [...]

I’m in! Sounds like fun
[...] Anyway, joining, that’s what I was talking about. I’ve joined a few more things. I’ve already mentioned Project Spectrum 2.0. It starts today. The first triad of colors are blue, white and gray. That’s pretty much the colors of my blog already so I won’t be making in changes there yet. Wordpress makes it easy to quickly alter the look and colors of your blog so latter on I will be using that feature to keep things matching the Spectrum colors. I’ve been trying to figure out how I’m going to really use the colors. Well, now I’ve got something, I joined another project. This one is an effort to get all of the patterns from the Barbara Walker Treasuries knit up and photographed in color. It’s called the Walker Treasury Project. Want to knit a swatch or twelve? Join up, there’s plenty to go around. My plan is to knit all of my swatches in the current Project Spectrum colors. I’m going to purchase similar weight yarn (probably dk or worsted) in the various colors. Once I’m done (or done enough) I’ll start putting the swatches together into a blanket. It will, no doubt be a crazy looking concontion, but what the heck. I bet I’ll have fun doing it. [...]
