Knitting Tourist

Published by lolly at 1:15 am under Stash Enhancement, Travel, USA - North Carolina

When a knitter visits a new location, it is customary for the knitter to seek out a new yarn shop and observe the local yarn culture.

I can report that the local yarn culture in New Bern, North Carolina is quite interesting, indeed.

Most tourists take snapshots with large marble and stone landmarks. The knitting tourist takes snapshots with large displays of animal fur and plant fibers. Most tourists remember their trip with small souvenirs: keychains, postcards, pens, and tchotchkes. The knitting tourist remembers the trip with a different kind of souvenir: a ball of this spun animal fur!

…This particular knitting tourist brought home some wool…

A wonderful souvenir to remember a great trip!

    Hi Lolly,

Thanks for the great blog! I’ve enjoyed reading about your knitting adventures for a while now & am glad I’m not the only knitting tourist out there. Your new yarn looks gorgeous! Good luck with the jersey. :)

  7. meganon 07 Mar 2007 at 7:05 am

I just love discovering yarn shops on vacations. It really is mandatory to bring back a souvenir too. Lovely sweater, the colors will be beautiful.

  8. Mintyfreshon 07 Mar 2007 at 7:31 am

That’s an impressive yarn store for such a relatively small town (I’m assuming). How great for your sister–or maybe for you, when you’re visiting.

  9. Liz K.on 07 Mar 2007 at 7:52 am

That lopi sweater is going to be gorgeous!

  10. Ashleyon 07 Mar 2007 at 8:01 am

Hee–I am on a yarn tour just now too! I’m racking up the souvenirs, but nothing as great as the yarn for that sweater. How beautiful!

  11. Suzanneon 07 Mar 2007 at 8:28 am

It looks like you’re having a great time. Nice yarn purchases and the sweater is beautiful!

  12. Zarahon 07 Mar 2007 at 8:28 am

That’s quite a wall of wool! Your Lopi sweater will be very pretty, and I’m sure it will always remind you of your vacation.

Tee hee. We ARE a funny lot aren’t we? I recently did the knitting tourist thing when we went to Asheville. Remember? DH had us stay an extra day so that I could get all FIVE yarn shops in??? I’m glad that Kris is as understanding as my DH is. We are lucky girls, we knit and we have hubbies who support our obsession, er, hobby!

I can’t wait until you start that pullover. I saw that yarn in person and you picked some amazing colors!

  17. Kellyon 07 Mar 2007 at 9:39 am

nice yarn! i’m in love with that sweater!!

  18. Monion 07 Mar 2007 at 9:46 am

of course! the first thing I try to do is scope out the local yarn action. Sometimes I have to trick my hubby into it, though. He’s not much into the yarn shopping. darn it.

    That pullover is lovely!

  19. Jenniferon 07 Mar 2007 at 9:49 am

Oooo, a wall of Cascade and Brown Sheep. *sigh*

  20. eliseon 07 Mar 2007 at 9:50 am

    *drool*

kinda makes me want to go yarn store hopping this weekend and look at sock yarns…

  21. Jennaon 07 Mar 2007 at 10:05 am

You’re so very anthropological in your approach to the knitting tourist. thank you for your thoughtful explication :) The colors of the Lopi are wonderful, you’ll have such a beautiful, jewel-toned sweater when you’re done.

  22. Saraon 07 Mar 2007 at 10:17 am

We must be of the same breed, this tourist always brings home yarn, too. Like the yarn you chose for the sweater – it will be beautiful….

  23. margeneon 07 Mar 2007 at 10:38 am

That’s my favorite trip souvenir, too! You’ll enjoy knitting it and remembering your trip each time you wear it.

  24. staceyon 07 Mar 2007 at 10:44 am

very nice….the colors you picked are so pretty!

  25. Dorothy Bon 07 Mar 2007 at 10:51 am

Love the sweater and the yarns you chose.

I am definitely chomping at the bit for a holiday full of new yarn shops and that one looks like a great place to travel to. Someday.

  26. Feliciaon 07 Mar 2007 at 11:12 am

Is there anything better than taking a yarn tour of the United States? I think not! I picked up a book of yarn stores throughout the U.S. at my LYS last year and have enjoyed it immensely!

  27. Taraon 07 Mar 2007 at 11:14 am

Love the point-of-view on this entry…I was hearing Jacque Cousteau (or the narrator of Spongebob) do the voice-over :) !

  28. Adamon 07 Mar 2007 at 11:16 am

It’s always fun, although somewhat strange to me, to visit yarn shops in other cities. It’s fascinating to see how the yarn culture changes from location to location.

Nice haul too, that pullover will be sweet looking!

  29. novaon 07 Mar 2007 at 11:19 am

that sweater is on my list too, I think those colors will be gorgeous knit up in “Aftur.”

  30. yuveeon 07 Mar 2007 at 11:41 am

Love the pics! That’s one gorgeous sweater, can’t wait to see it again!

  31. Traceyon 07 Mar 2007 at 11:53 am

Love the lopi, don’t you just love that stuff? Sounds like a great trip.

  32. Sarahon 07 Mar 2007 at 12:30 pm

Isn’t souvenir yarn just the best? I love that sweater.

  33. Jodieon 07 Mar 2007 at 12:50 pm

I love yarn souveniers. So much better than a magnet for the fridge or commemerative plate.

  34. Courtneyon 07 Mar 2007 at 12:53 pm

Ohhhh, I love a good knit shop story! Beautiful yarn, can’t wait to see that one come together (I am less than confident in my stranding skills.)

  35. Miss Scarletton 07 Mar 2007 at 2:35 pm

That shop looks beautiful. I love walls full of yarn!

  36. Karaon 07 Mar 2007 at 2:42 pm

I love VYS (Vacation Yarn Shops). They are so magical!

I love that pullover! They colors you picked are going to be perfect.

  37. sea anemoneon 07 Mar 2007 at 3:37 pm

that is going to be a stunning sweater. great color choice. :)

  38. veraon 07 Mar 2007 at 4:16 pm

i agree, knitters make the funniest tourists. i would take a world trip, just to stop at all the knitting fairs, shops and craft events, and wouldn’t care to see anything else. my family think i am crazy, but i know you would understand lolly ;0)
and i love “the wall”, reminds me i need to get me some more cascade 220.

  39. francoiseon 07 Mar 2007 at 4:42 pm

This sweater is gorgeous and I hope to see it on your needles soon!…

  40. Ginnieon 07 Mar 2007 at 6:25 pm

I love the colors you picked–they will make a beautiful sweater. It’s so much fun to discover new yarn shops. I have my husband trained to keep an eye out!

  41. Nonnahson 07 Mar 2007 at 6:26 pm

Cute pullover! And it’s going to look so cute in the colors you chose.

  42. Knit Nurseon 07 Mar 2007 at 6:55 pm

I like to plan these kind of weekends – the weirdest thing is when they just happen out of the blue! Usually I get so excited I just buy anything – often because I don’t have the list of yarn requirements with me for my planned projects. Must get more organised!

  43. Sueon 07 Mar 2007 at 9:03 pm

I love those colors of your yarn, just gorgeous. I wish we had yarn shops where the walls were stacked to the ceiling with yarn. How lucky you are to have those wonderful shops nearby, or at least near your sister when you visit her. Maybe there will have to be more visits throughout the year to keep your stash updated too.

  44. eyeleenon 08 Mar 2007 at 12:02 am

Love the colors for your new project. An excellent way to remember your trip.

  45. Brendaon 08 Mar 2007 at 12:03 am

Beautiful colors for the Lopi sweater! Glad you had a good time.

  46. Grandma Fleaon 08 Mar 2007 at 6:42 am

Collecting photos of knitting shops and knitting around the world, in my travels, is one of my favourite occupations.

  47. Jodion 08 Mar 2007 at 8:28 am

Quite the educational trip! I had no idea that so much Cascade and Lamb’s Pride could coexist peacefully in such close proximity.

I love that sweater pattern, by the way.

  48. Andreaon 08 Mar 2007 at 11:13 am

Oh, how YUMMY!!!! What a way to spend your weekend.. So Jealous!!! The sweater will be beautiful in those colors. Ü

  49. Asaon 08 Mar 2007 at 2:09 pm

You’re a tourist to my liking. Great colour choices for the sweater.

  50. heatheron 08 Mar 2007 at 2:37 pm

the stop off in a new LYS is a must in every new town…very cool that you got to see…mmm you know I love the socks.

I love the colors for the lopi…the blues with the neutrals is going to be stunning on you. SO pretty.

makes me think of another lonely yoked pulli that I need to finish.

  51. iselon 08 Mar 2007 at 5:35 pm

That’s a nice little store and I love New Bern. There are some many pretty places to see and it is such a charming town…
That’s going to be one beautiful memento.

  52. Heatheron 08 Mar 2007 at 7:06 pm

Awesome swag from what looks like a fun shop!

  53. Raganon 08 Mar 2007 at 8:24 pm

HEY! That is my yarn store. It is on the way home from work for me and I stop there whenever I need to feel the yarny goodness. Cool.

  54. Kellyon 09 Mar 2007 at 7:33 am

Looks like a great yarn shop to visit!

  55. Amy Artisanon 09 Mar 2007 at 7:56 am

What a fun part to your trip! Love the yarn that you picked up – it will be a beautiful sweater & indeed a great way to remember the trip. I love picking up yarn “on the road” as well. This Monday I have to go to a different client location & I’m bummed that the fun looking YS in the town is closed on Monday – oh well.
