Tale of Two Socks

Side by Side Socks
Canyon Hiking Socks and the Shades in Trekking socks

Uncovered after many many months at the bottom of my knitting bag… For all practical purposes, I had forgotten about the Canyon Hiking Socks that I started during last year’s Socktoberfest. I was excited when I started them - it was a fun and simple pattern in a bigger gauge, so naturally I thought I would finish them in a heartbeat. Here we are, six months later, and sock one is not even complete. I considered ripping them because they were a tad to tight, but I know they will stretch with some wear. The pattern is from the book, Greetings from Knit Café, which has several great patterns including this one. I substituted some stash yarns - Lion Brand Wool Ease and a recycled burgundy wool from the thrift shop - instead of the Rowan Wool Cotton that the pattern calls for. Seems to be a good fit too!

The Shades in Trekking sock is the exact opposite. I started this sock last week, and I already turned the heel and finished the gusset decreases. I simply can’t put this one down. I think Trekking yarn has that effect on me. I simply can’t wait to see how long one color will repeat, or what new color is going to be incorporated on the next row.

I had a battle with the flu this week, and that time out gave me the chance to work on both of these socks - in between naps and frequent trips to the loo…

I can’t explain why some socks get attention and others don’t - I love all socks equally! I do plan on spending some quality time with the knee highs though - although they probably won’t be worn until autumn with the wool and all. The dark heathery pink is a natural fit for Project Spectrum’s color theme this month (and it feels good to get a lingering project out of the basket and finished!)  There’s no denying that the Trekking is perfect - greens, yellows, and pinks (with some reds and blues thrown in for good measure) makes this one the ideal PS yarn!

Have a happy Easter, and a great weekend :)

So sorry you had to deal with the flu. I hope you’re fully recovered by now.

The Trekking sock is the perfect April/May Project Spectrum project. (And you’re so good at keeping up with the featured colors . I’m stuck in the past! LOL!)

The socks are looking great! Glad to hear that you are on the mend from the flu - I got hit with a bug 2 weeks ago & it was no fun.

    Both are looking awesome!

it’s funny how some sock patterns - either simple or complex - just grab us and we can’t stop knitting, while others - even similar to the ones that grab us - just sit….I guess every sock has it’s time! Those canyon socks are great - i love the colors!

I have been wondering about that book…

Loving all the pink and green too!

Cool socks! I remember the knee high from last fall. It looked so cozy then and still does! Today (with the frigid, unApril weather we are having; seriously did I wake up in Wisconsin today??), I am thinking a nice, warm (and pretty) knee high sounds great! And love that trekking. I think I have the same colorway. In fact it was the very first sock yarn I bought, about a year ago. One of these days, I actually use it!

    Feel better.

They are both beautiful and knee socks are perfect for those blustery rainy days in spring. Of course the Trekking sock looks more spring-like and bright so I think that would be the one I would be spending the most time with too.

The Mr. got knocked down with that flu on Tuesday poor guy. We are still hoping Girly and I don’t get it. I hope you are fully recovered and Chris doesn’t get it either. Nasty.

I like the picture that shows the socks are incomplete. lol

Some of my socks get more attention than others as well. For me, the simpler the pattern the longer it will take me to finish them.

I’m loving that colorway of Trekking! I wonder if that’s one of the ones I have in my stash… The chevron-type pattern of that sock shows off the striping of the Trekking very nicely.

Both socks look excellent! I love socks - though I do tend to get very bored with the foot section - so I’m thinking of trying toe up next time around.
The colours in Trekking are awesome. The fit with the Hiking sock looks great - they are on my list too.

    That Trekking colorway is fantastic!

they make a cute pair… I know for me- I also can’t put the trekking down because of the surprise you get at every turn- such lovely color transitions.
I love to see the part where the leg pattern, the heel+gusset and the foot show- you see all the different ways the yarn plays.

  20. Monion 08 Apr 2007 at 12:26 pm

I forgot you were knitting those stockings! I love them! Both of them, actually…

  21. kaeton 08 Apr 2007 at 5:43 pm

i hope you are feeling better- well enough to gorge yourself on peeps and cadbury eggs at least! i think both socks are lovely, although there is no denying that those colors of the trekking are absolutely entrancing! i can see why you find it hard to put them down!

oh, you’ve inspired me to pull out my half finished-mateless socks and get cranking. That knee high looks wonderful! feel better.

  23. joyon 09 Apr 2007 at 12:18 pm

I love the hiking socks!!! Of course, I’m a hiking sock kind of gal, so this is no surprise…but I say finish them please so I can be inspired to (very eventually) try some of my own!

  24. Debbyon 09 Apr 2007 at 1:04 pm

Hope you feel better now! I’m glad that you were well enough to knit. I hate lying there too sick to pick up the needles!! Your socks look great as usual!

  25. Ruthon 09 Apr 2007 at 1:31 pm

I love knee-high socks - yours look just right for hiking!

  26. Saraon 09 Apr 2007 at 1:59 pm

I hope you’re feeling better!! The trekking is gorgeous… what a wonderful colorway!

  27. Elle Kaseyon 09 Apr 2007 at 2:27 pm

I couldn’t believe you’d finished more socks. Then I saw the feet. To get well you might wanna cover up those tootsies. But they’re going to be awesome socks.

  28. Erinon 09 Apr 2007 at 3:12 pm

Both socks are great but I particularly love the hiking knee highs. The color and the stripes are so cute and it looks like a perfect fit!

  29. Debion 09 Apr 2007 at 9:53 pm

I feel the same about Trekking, it’s addictive :)

I’m using a colorway now that I don’t even like (I’m not a purple girl) yet I still love love love the sock!
