Notes on Wren
Wren: You remember her.
The cardigan that made me stop in my tracks.

Within a day of receiving the Berroco weekly newsletter, I had ordered the yarn for her. I am not usually such an impulsive buyer. This pattern just had my number, I guess. Wren would be a very welcome addition to my lackluster wardrobe. Got the yarn within three days, and I cast on immediately. |
The love is still there, although the honeymoon is over. Wren continues to excite me - despite the sea of stockinette that I am wading through at this point. For all of the love I give to the pattern, I am not too pleased with the yarn. It’s like being head over heels in love with someone, and then finding out that you can’t stand your partner’s family…
It snags. You can’t wear jewelry. File your fingernails and cuticles. Put lotion on your hands. Each little snag is quickly remedied, but the “annoying factor” is quite high.
I am working the left front of the cardigan. As you can see from the picture above, the neckline is decreased to fit a nice little shawl collar in later. At the same time, I am working the arm hole decreases, seen here. I hope to have a nice fit with this garment. The yarn is not ALL bad, as it does have a nice drape, and creates a sturdy fabric. I assume that the problems I encountered with the snagging are commonplace with any ribbon yarn… just hoping it won’t constantly snag when I wear it as a finished garment!

You picked a great color for this despite the yarn woes.
P.S. When are you going to be in NYC? I’d love to get together with you again (if we don’t drown in all this water first!).
It’s looking great. I’ve yet to knit with a Berroco yarn that didn’t underwhelm me.
Sigh…its beautiful despite the annoying factor! Someday I shall be able to afford Berroco heh!
I feel your pain, but hang in there, the colours are to die for, absolutely stunning! x
Ohhh that is a shame! There truly is nothing worse than knitting something and then having to not move while you wear it, or letting anything get near! The colours are beautiful, though!
It’s not the ribbon yarn that’s the problem, it’s the nylon. I guess the artificial fibers are just so very fine that they can snag on anything. I had similar problems with a different yarn but one which also had a lot of nylon in it. I didn’t think my hands were dry but the yarn sure thought so!
Keep going though, it’s going going to be a beautiful sweater when you’ve finished.
I feel your pain. That is exactly what happened to me with the Berrocco Gem that I was using to knit a tank top for my mother. It’s still not finished.
that’s frustrating, but the color is really, really pretty
So so so pretty though! I hope you love it when you’re done, after all that snagging.
I *love* the sweater. Too bad the yarn is difficult. But it *looks* great!
Oh that is sooo frustrating. It looks gorgeous knit up though. If that’s any consolation.
I have a love/ hate relationship with ribbon yarns too. It makes such a pretty fabric but so awful to work with. The twisting! The snagging! ack.
It is turning out lovely though…
Sorry the yarn is being a pain, but I think this will be a real winner when it’s all done!
It is a lovely sweater, but knitting with tempermental yarn is no fun at all.
BTW: I wanted to tell you that I took PS as my inspiration for a series of bead pendants I made for my Etsy store. Thank you for the inspired color groupings!
that will be a beeeeutiful sweater! Just wanted to stop by and say, yes! that was the gift yarn that I knit the monkey socks with. I thought about dying it… but when I saw that pattern, I just had to keep it clean! Thanks for the compliments, and the yarn!!
Too bad about the yarn! The pattern looks nice and it seems to knit pretty quickly, so I think you’ll survive.
I just cast on my Wren last night. I’m not the girliest of girls when it comes to manicures, so I had some snag problems last night from my dry hands and cuticles. But I’m really pleased with how the yarn is knitting up. I’m always a bit unsure about variegateds and novelty yarns, and wasn’t too sure I’d like the matte/shiny/black thread thing. But I do! I do! Yay. So I’ll moisturize before picking up Wren again.
But it’s so pretty! I hope you’re happy with the finished cardi.
Wren is looking great - even with all of the hiccups the yarn is causing.
I’ve noticed similar things with a ribbon yarn project I’m working on - I put it down almost a year ago & have never got around to picking it back up again…
Hmmm, good to know. I really liked wren the first time you posted it. I’m eager/curious to see how it comes out (I think the color will look good on you)
well, in spite of the problematic nature of the yarn, it is still very very pretty. the colors are knitting up so wonderfully, it will be stunning to look at once it is finished!
Even though the yarn is bothering you - and that is a problem, the easy snagging - Wren is looking fantastic. The yarn is making a lovely material and the colour will be very nice on you.
I can’t wait to see it on!
The colours of this yarn are so pretty, it’s going to look so good when done, even though it’s a bit of a pain to knit.
Ahh, I’m glad you updated about this. I’m planning on a Wren eventually too, and was considering ordering that yarn, but I think I’ll substitute… I’m not as patient as you, and as gorgeous as that’s coming out, I think the constant snagging would drive me nuts!
Beautiful so far, though! Can’t wait to see it finished! That color’s going to be stunning on you.
It does look awfully pretty though…maybe all the hassles will just add to the beauty in the end. Beauty doesn’t come without pain, after all…
Such beautiful colors! And they mix together so well in the knitted garment. I hope the sweater will redeem itself from the snag woes!
What pretty yarn. You’ll be happy when it’s done.
Great colour choice, shame about it snagging. Thanks for the link to Wren. Your absolutely right, its gorgeous… I’ll just have to remember to subsitute the yarn… although it does have a gorgeous effect.
I’m sorry Wren is giving you such fits. It’s coming out *so nice* though, and I think you’ll love wearing it. You’ve mae great progress — you can do it!
So lovely! The color! But that yarn would have me tearing my hair out.
What a gorgeous jacket this will be - too bad that the yarn is so difficult - but hey, even if you can’t move, or wear jewellery, you’ll look spectacular - we must remember our priorities!
Sorry to hear that the yarn is a bit difficult. But the colour really is gorgeous, though. And I like the look of the design too, I think it will look great on you. You can do it, Lolly!
While it is a lovely color and gorgeous pattern - I feel your pain regarding not quite loving the yarn - I hope you are thrilled with the fit when complete. Can’t wait to see it on you!
That is annoying - it is coming out beautiful though - maybe you’ll have to go minimalist when you wear it…
The yarn is gorgeous, but it’s too bad that it’s so annoying. I can totally understand. Knitting with silk is kind of annoying for the same reasons.
I made a shawl with Berroco Suede and it was the same way. It snagged if you looked at it the wrong way. I made me nuts too.
The fabric your yarn is making is really pretty though, so hopefully that will make up for it being so annoying.
