Composition of the Compendium

Published by lolly at 9:29 pm under Juta's Stockings, Shades in Trekking

I have three pairs of socks on the needles right now, and two of the pairs are part of my own personal project, the Nancy Bush Compendium. This is a long-term project that I am combining with this month’s Project Spectrum colors.

Remember Juta’s Stockings that I started in January? They were cast on as part of the informal sock knitalong that Maritza and I started, called the Green Socks Knitalong.

Knitting on Juta's Stockings

Now that we are all about green, it was time to pull them back out!

Juta's Stockings

Juta's Stockings

At first, I was not very happy with the way that the yarn (Tess Designer Yarns) was striping and flashing. I had not seen this effect in any of the other Tess yarns I have worked with, or the samples.  However, it really isn’t that noticeable in natural light, and it has kind of grown on me. I don’t remember seeing any other yarns with this same shade of green. The pattern is a simple arrowhead lace on the side panels of the cuff, and on the top of the foot - called “Juta’s Stockings” from Nancy Bush’s wonderful Folk Knitting in Estonia.

My second sock project is from Nancy’s mail order service, The Wooly West. It is the Shades pattern, and instead of using the different yarns as Nancy does in the pattern, I chose to use the self-striping Trekking XXL in the #107 colorway. I finished sock one, and sock two will be cast on very soon. (I am telling myself to finish the first Juta’s Stocking before I start on it!)

Love the Juta’s Stockings. They need to go on the list…

The Trekking ones are lots of fun, and Juda’s Stockings are beautiful! I do like that green.

Oooh. Green. Lace. Socks. What’s not to love?! :)

  5. jayneon 18 Apr 2007 at 3:24 am

I like the green with its effects. That’s my kind of colour and yarn. I also like the Trekking a lot. I keep hearing such good things about that yarn.

Ok, I’ve finished the back, two sleeves, and one front of Wren. It is kind of a boring knit. Tomorrow I’m going to sew up one side and sleeve so that I can try on what I have so far. Hoping to post that on blog too.

I read your assessment of the Zodiac yarn and tend to agree, but the colours are pretty.

Both socks are really great. I like the subtle changes of the green yarn a lot and don’t really see it as flashing and pooling.

  7. staceyon 18 Apr 2007 at 7:25 am

Huh - I have never seen Tess’ yarn do that!!!! I kind of like it! Love the shades sock - you picked the perfect yarn for that!

  8. margeneon 18 Apr 2007 at 8:04 am

They are both great! It doesn’t matter which one you finish next, just make sure you finish both PAIR;-)

Love them both, but especially the Juta (though a green yarn has yet to disappoint me).

I also love that first photo — makes me want to snuggle up on the sofa all cozy-like. :)

Those are some nice looking socks! And I love your idea of a Nancy Bush Compendium. What a great way to gather all of her projects you finish in one place.

  22. novaon 18 Apr 2007 at 1:43 pm

I like the effect in the Tess yarn, it looks nice… I like the pattern for the trekking sock too. Pretty colors!

  23. Jenon 18 Apr 2007 at 2:52 pm

    Your socks are lovely.

  24. courtneyon 18 Apr 2007 at 3:15 pm

    That’s a lovely green…I really like it.
I am obsessed with Nancy’s sock patterns, they just “speak” to me and I feel compelled to knit them all. I just saw that Grumperina was making the Gentleman’s sock in Railway Stitch and I am now determined to make that as well! Of course I have to finish my Child’s First Socks first… :)

  25. Michelleon 18 Apr 2007 at 3:24 pm

Ohhhhh what pretty sock! I love both colours!

  26. Noraon 18 Apr 2007 at 7:08 pm

I love how the different textures interact with the yarn.

(Have I already mentioned this on Flickr?)

  27. Shiranion 18 Apr 2007 at 7:48 pm

    I love that colorway…is it color 100?

  28. Jenniferon 18 Apr 2007 at 9:40 pm

    Gorgeous socks!

  29. Dorothy Bon 18 Apr 2007 at 11:00 pm

Pretty socks! Although I think it would be hard to play with just one colour when the Trekking was calling my name.

  30. eyeleenon 18 Apr 2007 at 11:09 pm

    oooooh lovely!!

  31. iselon 18 Apr 2007 at 11:21 pm

    So, sock monkey, go!

  33. Erinon 19 Apr 2007 at 2:14 am

I LOVE the green of the first sock. So vivid and deep. I am such a sucker for green.

  34. Christyon 19 Apr 2007 at 8:15 am

I have never seen Tess’ yarn do that. Very odd.

    The trekking sock looks awesome.

  35. Hillaryon 19 Apr 2007 at 10:17 am

Those socks look great. I think that it’s the green speaking to me as much as it’s the pattern. I’m a green girl at heart.

  36. Adamon 19 Apr 2007 at 12:45 pm

I love both of the socks! The colors in that Trekking are dynamite, and they go great with the pattern :)
