After a few false starts, the blue zig zag scarf for my International Scarf Exchange pal is coming along quite well. I always run into problems when I have to cast on hundreds of stitches. I use stitch markers, and I still lose count. This one was a challenge in particular because of the yarn’s texture. I stuck with it though, and now I am nearing completion.
Two more rows of the light aqua, and then I add the fourth and final blue periwinkle colorway. I hope my pal likes this scarf – her questionnaire did not provide a lot of information about her preferences. I think I will be lucky to have enough yarn leftover to make another (perhaps a little smaller) version for a headband, belt, or summer scarf.
The scarf will be ready very soon, and I will have time to post it before the deadline. My pal lives in Asia, so the sooner I can mail it, the better. I haven’t heard from the knitter who is making my scarf in quite awhile – I hope I have a scarf to look forward to as well!
… … …
The long weekend started off with a Friday night show in DC. Kris and I went to see one of our favorite singer/songwriters, Damien Rice, at Constitution Hall in the city. We got there early enough to do some sightseeing before the show. Across the street from the concert hall is this little place… You may recognize it.
I have lived in the DC area for many years, but this is only the second time I have been to the White House grounds. The first time was as a child to view the “Nutcracker Christmas” tour during the Bush, Sr. administration. We didn’t go inside this time, but we played tourist and snapped some photos.

Damien Rice put on a wonderful show. There was no opening act, so he just walked onto the candle-lit stage and started to play his guitar, and later the piano. His albums take up permanent residence on our .mp3 players, so it was a real pleasure to see and hear him live. (links to some of his videos) It was mellow, thoughtful, passionate, and the perfect way to spend a Friday night.

The colors you chose for the scarf are gorgeous. Your pal will love them.
Sounds like you and Chris had a wonderful date. The weather looked gorgeous too.

Cool! Damien Rice! When I got to see him in Cologne back in March, I feel that he was a bit too loud in the concert….I would’ve wished that he’d play more of the mellow stuff.
That scarf will be worth the battle! You chose such lovely colors.
The Damien Rice show looks like it was amazing!!
The scarf is coming along quite nicely despite all the problems with the cast on.
I enjoy listening to Damien Rice too.
Yes I love Damien Rice!!!
Ouch – that quote about “The first time was as a child to view the “Nutcracker Christmas” tour during the Bush, Sr. administration.” really made me feel OLD. I knew you were young… but when put like that I feel really old. Sigh. Looks like a great way to spend a Memorial Day weekend. I love the scarf – is it an original pattern?
You and Kris are the cutest couple Lolly!
Have a great w/e!
What a pretty scarf, I love the colors and pattern you chose!
My friend Tamar saw Damien Rice Tuesday in Philly (or whatever night he was in Philly last week)! She was psyched, too.
And if your scarf person wasn’t specific about likes/dislikes, then presumably she likes most anything! The scarf looks great, Who wouldn’t be happy with it?
Sounds like a great time! The scarf looks lovely!
I love Damien Rice too, so glad it was a good concert. Your scarf looks great as does all of the other recent knitting – especially Wren.
Love the photos – especially the last one! x
Your scarf looks beautiful and I hope your pal comes through for you.
The concert looks pretty cool and it sounds like my kind of show. Love the photo of the two of you together. You really are a cute couple.
The scarf looks wonderful so far, and the colors are gorgeous. Gee I remember going to see live music (before kids that is), and it was always a great way to end the week from work. It sounds as though you and Kris enjoyed yourselves immensely.
I think the scarf looks fabulous thus far, lucky ise pal! And a Damien Rice concert? Perfect way to spend an evening in my book. Lucky you!
The scarf looks lovely! I hate casting on 75398457838458934 too. I never make it the right length, even after swatching and math. Maybe that means I must knit the other way.
I’m glad you had a good time at the concert! It looks like it would have been fun. And really, you’re not missing much re White House. If I were you, I’d probably go if I didn’t think its occupant were a conniving, corrupt, reckless half wit who starts wars for political and/or financial gain. (politics aside…)
i really like the colors your picked out…so beautiful & they go well together.
Damien Rice! I’m so jealous!
I really like the scarf, I’m sure your pal will too. Those are great colors for everyone, so who wouldn’t like it? Looking forward to seeing the finished project!
what a wonderful, relaxing and soulful way to begin a long weekend!
Oh, what a great tour. Thanks.
You two look great, what a great image of you both.
Favorite thing to do with chives? I’d say appreciate their pretty flowers. I don’t know how to cook with them…actually
You know, it really does sound like a perfect Friday. I love that picture of you two!
wow, that scarf is really coming along! you picked some great colors for that pattern. it will be worth it!
Aw, you two are so cute!! And your scarf pal is v. lucky.
OMG! I was there at the concert, too, with knitting friend Barbara. For a long time before the show, along the side where the buses were parked, I was sitting on a bench knitting. Sitting there knitting, with the buses and bouncers, and the president flying in/out in his helicopter…it was a very odd combination, but a lovely night in DC.
You took a really great shot of the White House! I am embarrassed to say I have yet to visit it. You live in such a great town, always so much to do around there. Such a sweet photo of you both!
Your pal is lives in Asia! Your scarf is going for a lovely trip. She will love the colors you combined. I do.
Man i love that pic of you guys!
The scarf is going to be great. You have a lucky pal.
