More Inspiration from Ms. Gaughan

Published by lolly at 12:12 pm under Book Business / Reviews, Inspirations

I have yet to knit one of Norah’s patterns (I am planning one for the next color scheme of Project Spectrum) but I draw such inspiration from her work. Perhaps it is her clean lines and unique constructions, or her nature-oriented motifs… all I know is that I love it.

Last week’s Berroco Knit Bits email inspired me all over again - they announced Norah Gaughan’s new pattern book, combining two collections, and simply titled “Volume One” (that indicates that more than one is planned!) There are some brilliant pieces in both collections, and here are some of the ones that really caught my eye:

Norah's Justina skirt worn as dress

This picture shows three of the knits from the “Urban Layers” collection. “Justina” is the skirt -worn here as a dress - such a lovely and versatile piece! (and see the boots? I have some that are nearly identical!)

Loving Norah's work - Anais tee

The Anais tee, with the lovely neck line. I can see this become a hot blog knit…

Norah's Chantal Cardigan

I love the photostyling in both collections, and these two pieces, the Chantal cardigan, and the simple Noemi scarf are both nice additions to any wardrobe.

Norah's Skirt - Aune

The Aune skirt is particularly lovely with all of the textural details.

There are some other stunning designs in this collection, and even some simple designs that will be wardrobe staples. I am looking forward to getting my copy of this wonderful volume!

wow! That second pattern, the top, totally made my eyes widen! A hit for sure!! I cannot wait for this pattern book… thanks Lolly!

Anais totally caught my eye too! I’m hoping I have something in the stash for it . . .

i can’t wait to see this pattern book either. when you posted the pictures on your flickr account, my heart skipped a beat. Woohoo!

I already sat and drooled over half of the items from this book after seeing it on the Berroco website.. I think half of it is the photostyling of the book that really got me interested in the designs. Usually I think Berroco steals its design concepts from Zoolander’s “Mugatu” (the whole army blanket as poncho “Derelicte” look…) but I’m glad to see them stepping it up.

I love her designs, too. For me, it’s the way she combines unique textures and patterns into classic clean lines. Makes for a piece that you can wear for years but that will always have a little edge to it. I can’t wait to get my own copy!

couldn’t agree more! when i got the newsletter i thought “lolly must be loving this one too!”

given how great a lot of the free berroco patterns have been lately, i’m wondering if norah is designing them too. maybe wren?

  8. Barbon 11 Jun 2007 at 2:33 pm

  12. katieon 11 Jun 2007 at 4:35 pm

Oooh, thanks for the heads up. I hadn’t visited that Berroco site in a while. So pretty!

  13. Jackieon 11 Jun 2007 at 5:23 pm

I loved the Anais tee too, but I’m wondering why the model has a shirt underneath.

  14. cristinaon 11 Jun 2007 at 7:06 pm

    i think i’m in love!

  15. Marion 11 Jun 2007 at 7:22 pm

Wow, there are some great patterns in that book!

  16. Megon 11 Jun 2007 at 7:28 pm

I’m not sure that “gimme” acutally expresses my desire for these booklets…. DEFINITELY interested in a KAL for Anais if anyone’s starting one up.

  17. Stephon 11 Jun 2007 at 7:39 pm

ohh my….I love every photo. Can’t wait till this one comes out!

  18. Nonnahson 11 Jun 2007 at 8:04 pm

I saw that pattern book preview, too, and I love that Chantal sweater!

  19. Ginaon 11 Jun 2007 at 8:05 pm

Oooh, thanks for letting us know. I am so buying that. Can someone tell me how to pronounce “Gaughan” so that I can ask at my yarn shop if they have it without embarrassing myself? I always say Gow-gan, but have no idea if that’s right.

  20. Melissaon 11 Jun 2007 at 8:56 pm

I got that email and almost immediately laid the credit card down to order the book. I do love me some Norah! Definitely love that tee and the cardigan; would definitely wear both a lot.

  21. claudineon 11 Jun 2007 at 11:42 pm

Ooh, what lovely patterns! Norah Gaughan is one of my favourite designers too. Can’t wait for the book to come out! Thanks for the heads up :)

  22. Karmaon 12 Jun 2007 at 12:01 am

I, too, was very excited to see Norah Gaughan’s new designs. Thank goodness she’s bringing Berroco up a notch or ten. I think my favorite is the Chantal cardi you posted… can’t wait to see what starts popping up in blogland!

  23. norahon 12 Jun 2007 at 8:25 am

    gone
    (like vaughan with a “g”)
Thanks sooooo much for all of the lovely words!

  24. lauraon 12 Jun 2007 at 9:07 am

OK, you’ve gotten me all excited about this! I printed out a list of Berroco shops in my area from their website and I’m going to see if I can find this at one of them. I think a KAL is a GREAT idea! :)

Also I can see a lot of the Urban Layers being great projects for our current Project Spectrum colors!

  25. aquaknitson 12 Jun 2007 at 10:04 am

Thanks for letting us all know! That Anais top is definitely gorgeous, a new must-buy pattern book!

  26. novaon 12 Jun 2007 at 10:05 am

Fantastic patterns to add to the queue. So Lolly, are you going to start a KAL? heh.

  27. Kathyon 12 Jun 2007 at 10:24 am

How cool that Norah reads your blog! But then who doesn’t? :)
I think I saw a crochet version of Knitting Nature at the store the other day full of amazing stuff.

I think I like that skirt. A lot.

  28. Sneaksleepon 12 Jun 2007 at 12:39 pm

It’s so interesting–I used to say that I would never knit a skirt, but lately I have seen several patterns that I think I would not only knit, but also actually wear! Thanks for the links!

  29. fawnon 12 Jun 2007 at 1:03 pm

oooh, i love nora gaughan’s designs. i sit and drool over ‘knitting nature’ all the time.

  30. Megon 12 Jun 2007 at 2:16 pm

I chose the same ones as favorites as soon as I saw them on Friday! I even made a mosaic for my blog but didn’t get around to posting until today. It’s nice to see some one shares exactly my taste. :)

  31. AmyPon 12 Jun 2007 at 3:10 pm

The Anais top really spoke to me, too. I can’t wait to see everyone else’s interpretation of it.

  32. knittingphilistineon 12 Jun 2007 at 4:01 pm

This book looks to die for!

  33. pamela wynneon 12 Jun 2007 at 4:15 pm

omg, I WANT this, like I haven’t wanted a knitting book in a while. Usually, I can’t find 3 patterns in a book that I would wear. This time, not only are three patterns I love in the same book, but also on the same PAGE, and even on the SAME MODEL!! Thanks for showing us.

  34. Brendaon 14 Jun 2007 at 7:01 pm

I liked the Eloide (sp?) shrug from her collection. The construction looked very interesting. They showed it in Ultra Alpaca Light, which I am also looking forward to, having knit very happily with Ultra Alpaca. Of course, many of the other patterns are great, too. I think I need this book!

  35. Ginaon 14 Jun 2007 at 11:40 pm

Wow, thanks Norah! Your way is much more elegant than mine.

  36. kaeton 15 Jun 2007 at 5:30 pm

i love it all! i’ll take one of each please! i really like her design aesthetic…very wearable

  37. Cathon 16 Jun 2007 at 6:06 am

Thankyou for posting this; I LOVE that coat. Now if I could only get the booklet delivered here to England… If anyone has any suggestions for online stores who would do this, I’d be eternally grateful!

  38. Miss Scarletton 16 Jun 2007 at 10:46 am

I love all of those! I only just checked out her Knitting Nature Book and was blown away - I think I liked nearly every pattern. How often does that happen with clothing?
Now a new book is coming…my library will be growing.

  39. Jodieon 21 Jun 2007 at 1:31 pm

I haven’t made any of her designs yet, but I did just get the Knitting Nature book as a gift. I keep looking through it and can’t decide which one I want to make! Now I have even more designs to keep me busy.

  40. [...] was really hoping that the shop would have the new Norah Gaughan collection, as they carry a full Berroco line… alas, it is not in stock yet. I can wait a few more [...]
