Burgundy Bliss
Two reds have completely captivated me during this round of Project Spectrum… deep rich burgundies and fresh tomato-ey reds. Funny how certain projects can take on both of these colors in different lights!
The Blue Sky Alpacas Bulky has lived in the stash for a few years - it was one of the first blog contests I won, back when I started blogging in 2004. It was one of the most magnificent yarns I had ever seen at the time, and it still is quite lovely! I didn’t quite know what to do with it - it is only 45 yards per ball, so there is limited pattern support for such a bulky yarn. Then I was reminded of the super-simple Uptown Scarf from Weekend Knitting. It calls for the same yarn. Isel made the scarf a few years back, and the simplicity really appealed to me.
Garter stitch is like an old friend.
Rockin’ the Size 35 needles! Long time readers may recall that these beautiful wooden needles were a Christmas 2005 gift from my parents. They found the needles at an antique shop.
Beautiful solid wood with a really nice point. Once you get used to the bulk of the needle, they are quite pleasant to work with… especially with the wooden clinking sound
… and on much smaller needles, I recently completed my first Whitby sock…

You may have seen Sandi Wiseheart’s recent announcement about the Knitting Daily blog tour in the daily email. Sandi will be stopping by LollyKnitting Around on Wednesday, July 4th, for a little interview! I am compiling some questions, and I would be happy to include questions from you (if space and time permits).
Please feel free to leave a question in the comment section, or you can email me, if you have something to ask!

Now I realize why I have been hooked on reds lately!!! It’s all the Project Spectrum juju comin’ my way!
I have some nice ones up on my blog - those are my fav.
I love the tomato red - the first one you show. Yummy!
I love those deep rich reds too. I just got a sweater’s worth of Blue Sky Alpaca Dyed Cotton in Tomato, and it is sooooo gorgeous. I keep it next to my chair just to pet it. Mmm.
Your sock looks great!
I really like bright cherry reds, although I’m not knitting with any at the moment. I’ve been fantasizing about making some beaded jewelry in cherry red and aquamarine. For some reason I love those two colors together. We’ll see… I love the photos of your chunky yarn and garter stitch.
The chunky red yarn is so gorgeous. I used to be afraid of reds, but I love it these days. Current fave is deep red.
I’m loving the rich burgundys myself. The color Alchemy Bamboo yarn that I used for my Montego Bay Scarf really captivated me. The yarn cost way more than I ever spend for a skein, but when I saw that color in the store I just couldn’t leave it behind.
Your Whitby is really pretty. I haven’t seen that yarn used much. It is nice to see how well it knits up.
I’m a candy apple red girl all the way…
Very pretty scarf! And the sock is fabulous too!
wow, those needles are…. BIG!
19 mm, can that be right? O.O
cool. i should think of a sweater with needles that size. that must knit up in a wink…
I love all reds, deep dark ones and coral ones, it’s a good colour for all seasons but the best for Winter time, when you need warmth and coziness - red scarf would be just perfect!
Mmm, I’ll take reds in any shade I can get, but that bulky alpaca looks delicious.
Nice Whitby. I have some dark plum bulky BSA form a SP exchange that I’m still stumped on using, Glad you found a project for yours.
My favorite reds are deep reds, ‘true’ red (think firetruck), and purpley-reds. I seem to knit with the latter most often (for me), I think perhaps because I don’t look great in purple and it’s the closest I can get to it.
I’m partial to the deeper reds, not so much the orangey reds.
I did see Sandi’s announcement and was very excited. Will ‘tune in’ on the 4th.
Beautiful Whitby! I love the tweed with that pattern. I’m a burgundy fan, more than any other variety of red, although I also have a strong fondness for rust, but I usually think of that more as an orange.
It’s been a while since I’ve made a scarf, but seeing that beautiful yarn and those big needles has me itching to cast on! Your photographs are beautiful, too. Good inspiration!
oooh - what a soft and cuddly scarf that will be! Burgandy is one of my all time favorite colors, like you, along with a bright red! Your whitby came out great! I love the combo of tweed and cables - always a winner!
I love deep, dark reds with blue under-tones. I also love how you photographed your sock.
Congratulations on the interview.
Great socks and I’m loving that tomato-y red!
You’re going to love that scarf. It is so warm and soft; I always grab it when it’s really cold outside.
No reds for me so far, except for the necklace. It looks like I am stuck with black.
Lolly those socks are gorgeous and the yarns are to die for! really pretty! Looking forward to the interview on Wednesday!
Mmm, both the scarf and the Whitbys are so cozy! My favorite red is this tomatoey shade of Koigu. I haven’t even knit anything with it — I just like to look at it on the skein.
The scarf looks incredibly soft and spring-y.
The Whitbys look beautiful too. There is just something about red in deep rich colours that is incredibly appealing.
All reds wow me Lolly, it’s me favoritest color in the whole wide world!
