Decision Making

Published by lolly at 10:13 am under Easy Street Pullover

Swatches don’t make for very interesting blog posts; hence the brief silence.  I finally came to a decision on my next big sweater project:  cast on for two!  So, I did just that…

Malabrigo Indigo

Malabrigo Worsted in Indigo colorway for the Easy Street Pulli

Balling this yarn up is nearly as fun as knitting with it.  Like other kettle-dyed yarns, there is a lot of difference in color from skein to skein.  I decided to use two skeins at once and alternate between the two every two rows - simply carrying the yarn up the side of the seam.  The variegation is very pleasing to my eye, but I was not quite sure how it would fare in the cable pattern.  Variegated yarn with cables can have two effects:  ugly and busy, or pretty and dimensional.  I was going for the latter.

Does it Work?

One and a half cable repeats on sleeve one - I think it passes the test!

The Nordic Memories pullover also got the go-ahead.  I am about 3 inches into the ribbing, so it doesn’t quite warrant a picture yet… once the colorwork starts, you will see it!

***

Any plans for the weekend?  Only two days and I am hoping to fit in quite a bit:  I have tickets to see the Decemberists and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (together!) tomorrow night, and Harry Potter, and a morning run, and maybe a haircut…

Talk about eye candy Friday! Yum!! I heard about the Decemberists show, but we have houseguests this weekend, so won’t be going. Definitely seeing HP tonight, though!

Gorgeous color and it looks like a perfect match for that pattern. Do you worry about pilling at all? I’ve used the yarn on some hats (fared well) and Fetchings (pilled) — maybe I just need to take better care. Your pictures make me want to go out and buy some more! :)

Such a beautiful color in that Malabrigo yarn. I’m sure it will become a lovely sweater!

  7. Genaon 13 Jul 2007 at 11:37 am

I’m so jealous! Beautiful yarn and going to see the Decemberists! Have a great weekend, I’m sure you will.

  8. Arianneon 13 Jul 2007 at 11:38 am

You chose the ones I wanted most to see! Yay!

That Malabrigo makes me squirm with GLEE.

  9. Beaon 13 Jul 2007 at 11:40 am

I’m delurking to say I love your blog, and the combo of the Malabrigo with the Pulli will be amazing. But really I also wanted to say I’m SO jealous that you get to see the Decemberists! I love them, have a great time!

  10. Annon 13 Jul 2007 at 11:55 am

hey! I’ll be at that decemberists show! I’ll keep an eye out for you… I missed them last time so I am superexcited to see them this time around.

  11. Zarahon 13 Jul 2007 at 11:55 am

That looks fabulous - the cables really pop on the reverse st st. Sounds like you’ve got a great weekend planned, too!

  12. Amyon 13 Jul 2007 at 12:05 pm

MMMMM… I love malabrigo… I’m putting off Harry to go to Friday the 13th Knitting in Hyattsville… enjoy the movie!

  13. Gina Lon 13 Jul 2007 at 12:15 pm

Wow I’m loving your easy street already the Malabrigo is stunning!

  14. spriteon 13 Jul 2007 at 12:25 pm

Do I sense a headstart on the August/September Project Spectrum colors here? Enjoy the Decemberists. We might still head up for the show, but I think the cost of lawn seats will probably keep us home in D.C.

  15. Stefon 13 Jul 2007 at 12:42 pm

Aieeee! You’re starting Nordic Memories! Now I want to start it too! But it’s too hot here to be knitting anything wool. Oh well, autumn will be here soon enough. Can’t wait to see your progress pictures!

  16. Jenon 13 Jul 2007 at 1:18 pm

I looove the Malabrigo. I made a Booga Bag with a couple skeins I had. Unfortunately, I had the water temp up too high and the colors all ran. So much for alternating skeins! I have seen the Malabrigo felted in such a way that the color variations stay. I can’t wait to see how this looks once you really get going.

  17. courtneyon 13 Jul 2007 at 1:19 pm

beautiful! i love that yarn…and really think it will do the sweater justice. i was contemplating using it for a sweater for my niece, but as it isn’t machine washable, i don’t think it is practical for her mother.
have fun in seeing the decemberists and the bso…you’ll be in my city this weekend!

  18. Kimon 13 Jul 2007 at 1:41 pm

Love that Malabrigo blue!! I’m currently knitting a red kettle-dyed yarn into a cabled scarf, and know what you mean about walking that fine line between dimensional and ugly…

I’m green with envy for your Decemberists and Symphony tix!! Wow! Maybe you’ll give us a concert review?

  19. maryseon 13 Jul 2007 at 1:42 pm

i love the malabrigo and the cable. it’s going to look great!

  20. staceyon 13 Jul 2007 at 1:53 pm

yep - i’d say it works!!! can’t wait to see Nordic - that one is on my to do list as well…..

have fun at Harry - it was great!

  21. Heatheron 13 Jul 2007 at 2:03 pm

Oh the Decemberists, you’ll love them live…and the cable does indeed pass the test!

  22. Marlenaon 13 Jul 2007 at 2:10 pm

Wow, I’m not usually into purple, but that is beautiful! And it looks great cabled. :)

  23. Joanna Kostrzewaon 13 Jul 2007 at 2:12 pm

I like the colour changes on the cable, it may be the good yarn choice! Please show us the Nordic Memories pullover soon, I really want to understand the beauty of it, it seems it’s on many people’s knitting lists but totally unappealing to me. ^^

  24. novaon 13 Jul 2007 at 2:21 pm

Mmm, Malabrigo. I think you are going to have a lovely sweater on your hands very soon.

  25. Theresaon 13 Jul 2007 at 2:28 pm

I think your malabrigo is working wonderfully with that cable. It really is pretty and dimensional. You’ve got me wanting to finally use the malabrigo I bought last year.

  26. tiennieon 13 Jul 2007 at 3:12 pm

What a beautiful color and it really works with the cables! Have a great weekend!

  27. Jenniferon 13 Jul 2007 at 3:29 pm

Is it sad if I bring my knitting to the Decemberists? For pre-show activity, of course…

This is the first concert I’ll see at Merriweather where I actually have tickets inside. Now it’s guaranteed to be a beautiful evening!

  28. Maggion 13 Jul 2007 at 3:38 pm

I know you have a million comments and they don’t all beg a reply, but how many skeins of the Malabrigo will the sweater need? ( You are making me consider a copycat move!) Also envious about the concert, especially since Ryan Adams didn’t make it to the show I was there to see in Charlottesville Tuesday. Enjoy!

  29. Mintyfreshon 13 Jul 2007 at 3:50 pm

What silence? I noticed no silence–you just posted the scarf with Mimi! (I wonder if all bloggers think they’ve been silent more than they are perceived to be? I think I haven’t written in ages, but I still post twice a week, even if just photos, so though I feel absent I suppose others don’t think so!)

I can’t believe you and all the sweaters. I had vowed that 2007 would be all about sweaters for me, and I’ve completed . . . ZERO. I’ve cast on for . . . ZERO.

  30. Danaon 13 Jul 2007 at 5:04 pm

What a beautiful varigated yarn! I’m looking forward to followi g your progress.

  31. Ginnieon 13 Jul 2007 at 5:05 pm

The Malabrigo is gorgeous! I have yet to try that yarn, but I know I will someday. You’re off to a good start!

  32. Beeon 13 Jul 2007 at 5:30 pm

That blue is gonna look fantastic on you. Mmm…malabrigo…you cannot go wrong with that yarn. I have about six skeins of this yarn just waiting to be knit up. I am currently stuck on socks at the moment.

This weekend: got a 10 mi run for my marathon training, and maybe a movie (http://www.sonypictures.com/homevideo/tekkonkinkreet/index.html) planned and time for lots and lots of knitting. Since I’m teaching summer school, we only work mon to thurs. So nice!

Sounds like you’re gonna have a great weekend! Do enjoy.

  33. Adamon 13 Jul 2007 at 5:58 pm

The cable is perfect w/ the Malabrigo, just enough variegation to make it interesting, and not enough to make it too busy. Nice choice!

And I’m so jealous that you get to see the Decemberists! You people on the East Coast have all the good shows!

And HP is great, I bet you’ll love it. I saw it on Wednesday and am planning to go again this weekend. Between the movie and Book 7, I can hardly contain myself :)

  34. rachel ion 13 Jul 2007 at 7:04 pm

oh malabrigo. i could sing songs of love for malabrigo. gorgeous colors. simply marvelous!

  35. erinon 13 Jul 2007 at 7:59 pm

The yarn looks so lovely in the cables. You know, I would never have thought of trying a variegated yarn for a cabled sweater like this but I’m beginning to see that it can work very nicely.

  36. iselon 13 Jul 2007 at 9:03 pm

Yay! The one I voted for. This is going to be sooo great, Lolly.

  37. Liz K.on 13 Jul 2007 at 9:04 pm

There’s that gorgeous blue again! Love it!

  38. Karmaon 14 Jul 2007 at 12:00 am

Oh, I’d say you definitely got “pretty and dimensional”. Verrrry nice.

  39. Maryon 14 Jul 2007 at 12:12 am

a whole sweater in Malabrigo — that’s knitterly heaven! Enjoy!

  40. Amy Artisanon 14 Jul 2007 at 12:20 am

I’m planning to see The Decemberists on Wed. w/ the Grant Park Symphony @ the Gehry designed bandshell in Millennium Park on Wed - looking forward to it! :)

Love the indigo - it is so fun to see how Malabrigo winds up.

Weekend plans…a monster yarn sale @ my LYS (although as I’ve been documenting my stash for Ravelry I probably don’t “need” anymore yarn) & maybe the 1000 Knitters portrait project.

  41. Monion 14 Jul 2007 at 7:16 pm

I think it looks very pretty with the cables! very subtle color changes.

Tonight I am meeting a group of Spokane flickrites for a photoroll :). I’m a little bit nervous about meeting new people but am also looking forward to it. Hoping to see a Harry Potter matinee, too.

  42. Erinon 14 Jul 2007 at 9:30 pm

The cables are going to look great, even with the variegation.

And by the way, you’re going to love Harry Potter!

  43. Kathyon 14 Jul 2007 at 10:16 pm

I am so jealous!!!! That Malabrigo is GORGEOUS!! And that sweater is the perfect design to show off all those amazing blues - just enough play in the stitches to make it interesting, but not enough to compete with the beauty of the yarn. PERFECT choice! I knit a hat in the same yarn (different colorway) over Christmas - it was so soft I made the brim a lot too long just because I wanted to keep knitting with it :) Can’t wait to see this one as it grows!

  44. Kathyon 14 Jul 2007 at 10:18 pm

(How cool is that!?! The comment fairy just turned my : and ) into a real smiley… hee hee!)
