Whitby in Tweed

Pattern: Whitby from Knitting on the Road
Designer: Nancy Bush
Yarn: Regia Tweed 6ply in #32 Burgundy
Needles: Size US 2.5 (3.00mm) DPNs

I worked on these socks steadily for days, and only set them aside recently to start on some sweater projects. I worked on them during my trip to North Carolina, and we even toured the historic part of town together. They knit up very quickly on the size 2.5 needles, and the cables, the purl stitching, and the ribbing, made them a fun and enjoyable knit. The Tweed was pretty good too – I bought this particular yarn at Stitches East 2006 from the WEBS booth. Initially planned for knee socks, I decided that the yarn would look good in this cabled pattern. Of historical note:  Nancy mentions in the book that this particular pattern, the rope cables and the diamond motif in between, were inspired by a fisherman’s sweater she saw in Whitby, England.

These are my fifth Nancy Bush project this year. I got a crazy notion to cast on for some mittens next. There are some lovely patterns (both NB patterns and many others) out there, and they would be a portable project during my travels over the next month…

*I was greatly moved by your comments on my last post. I thank you so much for taking the time to write out such thoughtful responses. This item is weighing heavily in my mind as I am running down the list of things to do before we leave in two weeks.

I just finished a Nancy Bush pattern – Gentlemen’s Shooting Socks. Pics up a little bit later today! I love Nancy Bush, and I’m planning on making many of the socks in her Knitting Vintage Socks.

so lovely! i hope you didn’t have to spend too much time on the photo shoot; it’s way too hot to be wearing wool socks outside…

Beautiful socks! I’ve taken the Nancy Bush book out of the library a few times, but I think I need to just buy it soon.

    BEAUTIFUL!!!
I knit these a while ago, but didn’t listen to Nancy and made them on small size 2 needles…and couldn’t get them up over my heel. The pattern was so enjoyable though that I plan to knit them again and maybe again.
The tweed really does a good job of showing off this pattern, and seems like an appropriate choice for the aran inspired cables.
Speaking of Stitches…will you be going in October? I think I will be at this one, and it would be nice to meet in person.

Love your tweedy socks. I really like cables…they look a lot more complicated then the reality and just look so stylish. I really enjoy Nancy Bush patterns but I’m still intimidated by them because they are so detailed and use teeny needles. The last pattern I knit too me months and months. The socks turned out wonderful and are prolly the best constructed socks I’ve knit so far.

Those look wonderful. I loved knitting this pattern, and think I might just have to knit it again for myself. I love them in tweed. Five Nancy Bush patterns in a year – dang, girl!

How I love tweed. Your socks are wonderful. I’m very impressed by your devotion to Nancy Bush – I want to knit pretty much every sock pattern she’s ever written, but I am not nearly as quick as you are!

Lovely! Whitby is such a great pattern.
How did you like knitting with Regia 6-ply? I just bought some of that yarn, in light gray tweed, probably for a pair of manly socks.

I really, really like the socks. They inspire me to extend my love for cables, from sweaters, scarves and hats, to socks.

I am in love with these socks. I’ve started to buy this book many times, and I think, I’m finally convinced to do it. I love the look of the tweed for fall. Very nice!
