The color scheme for my mittens differs considerably from the original pattern (from Folk Knitting in Estonia), but I think it is working pretty well. I swatched around with the colors and this was the one that really popped in my mind. The cuff was a simple ripple pattern, and I am about to start the row with the thumb gusset. The pattern knits up so quickly.
I really love stranded colorwork. I see much more in my future.
I worked on this last night as Kris and I wrapped up the final chapter of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. It was a pleasure to read it together the way we did. I must admit, however, that Kris had to read many of the final chapters because I was getting a little too teary to read aloud.
The mittens will benefit from a good blocking to even up the little stranding and the lace on the cuff. I am using a size 1.5 needle, and I am wondering if a size 1 would have been better…
Mittens (and gloves) have popped up in a few other places, so I am happy to see I am not the only one thinking ahead for the winter. Did you see Jan’s new Selbu mittens? and Joanna just finished some amazing Norwegian gloves! …and Sandy is thinking about (another) encore for the Warm Hands knitalong. So many lovely patterns to choose from!
~Happy Anniversary, Mom and Dad!~

Very pretty! I’ve been on a stranded knitting kick myself, and I’m thinking about another pair of mittens. I may have to keep your colorway in mind!
I’m reading a book called “Winter, Notes from Montana” (Rick Bass) and thinking about winter. At this time of year, while knitting with wool, it’s easy to feel nostalgic, perhaps even a bit romantic, about the winter ahead. The colors you’re using are unusual and very exciting…good choice!
They are gorgeous Lolly! I love your color choice and those fabulous cuffs!
Whoa, they are going fast and looking fab. Interesting how next to the pink, the blue looks brown- color is so relative and changable.
Those are beautiful!
Your mittens are just gorgeous Lolly! I really like the color combination you chose.
Your mittens are so pretty. They look like they’ll be fun to wear.
I cry really easily and Michelle hates when I read and cry. She can’t understand me! I cried for the first time in chapter 4 so you can imagine all the crying that came later.
SPOILER
When Ron and Harry were downstairs at the Malfoys and Hermione was upstairs…bawling!
END SPOILER
The colour scheme looks really great, Lolly. I find stranded work fascinating although I tend to knit really tightly and the item usually turns out smaller than intended.
It’s really cool that you and your hubby read the last book together. I was really impatient to read it and pretty much sped through it. I too, got teary eyed but more so when all the characters from the last books were all coming together near the end. Wow…what an amazing book, huh?
ooh-aaaah! They look gorgeous, Lolly! You’re so inspiring, with your delicious choices of colour and lovely projects you work on – I really enjoyed these photos of the mittens. I must try some stranded work myself sometime soon
Great idea to read the last book together, chapter by chapter, and I empathise the teariness!! xoxo
i totally got choked up a bit too with those final chapters!! and those mittens look beautiful! this is the second post with stranded knitting I’ve read and now it’s got me thinking…. to the queue!
Now that is so cool looking! The colors remind me of the 70′s. Great job!
Look at you and your colorwork! You’re making me want to make mittens now (but little use I have for them in LA)! These look fantastic, Lolly! Love!
I love your unique color combo, Lolly! Isn’t muticolor knitting fun?….(once you get the hang of it!)
Thanks, too, for the mention. I should have the finished mitten in my next post.
mittens are fabulous to knit – they’re so quick and a great chance to play with some strandwork etc.
These are gorgeous – the colours work so well =)
Jenna: it is brown! It is caramel brown, chocolate brown and a salmon orange-y pink
Your eyes are not deceiving you!
What is with people putting Spoilers in the comments! I’m glad i scrolled past quickly. Grr!
I’m more than halfway through the audio book–quite loving it. Love those mittens, girl!
The mittens are so pretty!
I still have a ways to go with Harry Potter, but I am loving this last book.
Very nice. I like the colors a lot. They’ll be great in only a few months’ time.
I love the colours you’ve chosen – pumpkin and brown have been on my mind a lot lately. Your combination is gorgeous.
Oh those are so pretty! I can’t wait to give stranded knitting a try.
Thank you for mentioning my gloves! *^v^*
I love the combination of rusty brown and coral in your mittens, these plus lilacs and violets are going to be my main Autumn colour palette this year (because I decided so! ^^).
those look great – I am itching to do some more stranded knitting!!!! I bet I could get 2 pairs easily out of a skein of Tess’…..(good excuse to buy more for other stuff than socks!) Can’t wait to see those in person. Love the colors!
Your mittens are so lovely! I started a pair of those mittens in the winter, but in colors very similar to those in the book. Currently, this project is hibernating. But summer would be the perfect time to work on these! Hmm… after the sockpal socks are done…
Mittens have been on my mind lately! I think it may be time to put down the socks and pick up the mittens!
I love the brown and salmon-y color together.
I have just been reading EZ’s knitter’s almanac (it arrived in my mailbox this week) – her writing style just makes me smile. She makes mittens in May and says “It is better not to make mittens in a hurry. [...] let’s take our time over them; let’s venture into new approaches and designs; let’s enjoy them”
Gorgeous! I especially love that Golden/Bronze color-YUM.
Beautiful! I’ve been working on a pair for Girly since winter comes fast some years and it will be here long before I am ready.
i am glad i am not the only one who cries when she reads the harry potter books! i did not start shedding tears until book four and it has been on ongoing problem with more and more tears with each consecutive book!
Beautiful mittens. They’re getting me in the mood for fall knitting despite the steamy weather. I’m glad I wasn’t the only one crying at the end of HP – I can’t believe there’s no more Harry to look forward to:(
Very nice! I like the colors you chose and the cuffs are really pretty. I’m knitting the Delicato mitts from Anne of Knitspot. In California, that’s all I need. I really like knitting mitts and mittens, and have even been having scary thoughts of knitting gloves, but I don’t know of a good first-glove-with-fingers pattern.
happy 3rd and many more.
Socks look intricate and gorgeous. Great fairisle work
They look stunning! Stranded colourwork is always impressive. And scary to contemplate…..
I love the colors that you have chosen. Looks great.
lovely colors on your mittens! Impressive colorwork!
I just love the HP books, I was crying quite a bit with those final chapters.
Nice color choices. Love them.
lolly, these look gorgeous! what a pretty pattern–can’t wait to see them all finished up.
very pretty, I really like the two shades of brown you used together. and happy anniversary to your parents!
