Socks on the Road
Nancy had it all right when she wrote Knitting on the Road, socks are the perfect knit for travel. I took along two unfinished socks when Kris and I left Maryland on Friday - a few hours of driving and I now have three finished socks: one completed pair, and another finished anklet. Is it the the seemingly endless stretch of highway that spurs the knitting? or the hours of sing-along and knit-along with the CD player? Either way, finished socks are finished socks…
Stripey Silk Garden Lite Socks
Yarn: Noro Silk Garden Lite, colorway 2015 (2 skeins)
Source: Yarns on First, Napa, California
Needles: Size US 4 / 3.5mm DPNs
Pattern: Basic sport weight stockinette, ribbed cuff
I am just pleased as punch that the stripes actually matched up! I did a little manipulating to make this work, but sometimes Noro can be a craps shoot. Thankfully it worked out for me this time! The only difference is that the first skein had slightly shorter color repeats, so there is a small pink stripe on the top of the left sock, and the toe is fading into the yellow color. I am happy that it matched up around the heel and the gusset. That is the hardest part to ensure.
The yarn is typical Noro, which means you either love it or hate it. There is a lot of “vegetable matter” in the yarn, just like Silk Garden and Kuryeon, but if that doesn’t bother you, it is great yarn. There is no arguing with the amazing colors of Noro, and the striping fades into the next band so beautifully. The yarn is not itchy on the foot, and with wear and a nice soak, I am sure they will be even softer. The larger gauge makes them a little tricky to wear with some shoes - but they will be a nice fit for boots, sneakers, and house slippers. I will be wearing these a lot this winter.
…more of my trip to North Carolina tomorrow…

Oh, these turned out to be sooo beautiful! Very fall!!!
Oh my, I am in love with your socks. I am a NORO lover, I think the “veggie matter” adds to the charm of the yarn and you can not go wrong with the colors. They can’t be matched. Anyway, back to the socks. I am definately making a pair.
Oh my those are beautiful!!
Those are gorgeous! I’m not sure if I’d like working with Noro or not. Guess there’s only one way to find out, right?
We just came back from North Carolina, too, wouldn’t it be weird if we passed each other on the road and didn’t know it? It’s a small world!
I saw this photo on Flickr and thought it was so much fun!
Wow! That’s a healthy measure of needling, with results that belie auto motion! Bravo, HighwayGirl!
Those look great. I like the pumpkin too.
You are so fast, with or without the driving!! I love them, they’re seasonally appropriate:)
Great socks!!!
So cute! I love the colors!
Cute socks! I’m obsessed with Noro right now for the colour at least… the yarn not so much, but I love the colour.
I’ve done some car knitting in my time, and three socks has yet to be achieved by me. They’re so cute - love the colors for Fall!
Lovely stripey socks for fall!
And you said I was fast!
I’m still trying to decide if I want to try and make mine match or not…we shall see! They look great!
Beautiful color!
Damn, you’re fast! Beautiful socks, beautifully photographed. I never would have thought of making that yarn into socks but it’s truly an inspired idea!
Great socks and gorgeous fall colors!
The colours are so yummy!
Beautiful, as always.
Wow, you are so fast! I was thinking about getting some of that yarn to make socks just last night. Now I definitely will!
North Carolina? sigh.

They are fantastic, Lolly! I love the way they striped up!

Lovely! I never would have thought to use that yarn for socks, but it looks to be a great choice.
Just beautiful! Your photos just say: “welcome to Fall!”
What beautiful stripey socks! I love all your socks. Alas, I only have 2 lonely pairs of handknit socks in my drawers. Maybe I should work on fixing that this winter.
I just bought a bunch of apples last weekend and my husband and I fought over who got to use the peeler/corer thing. It’s so great! We made applesauce but I might have to get some more apples and dust off the dehydrator. I forget about that thing!
mmmm, silk garden socks. what a great idea! they look so fun
very cute - stripes are always nice!
Very cute!!! I still in three years of serious knitting have not tried noro… but I’m loving it used for socks!
Great socks. I never would have thought of using the Silk Garden Lite for socks, but it’s brilliant.

Wonderful socks! The colors look beautiful! I think those are some of the best socks I have ever seen!
I absolutely love your socks! I have yet to try Silk Garden Lite and Noro is a major favorite of mine, so I will have to try a pair for myself.

Yummy stripey goodness. These are just gorgeous!
gorgeous! Finished socks are a wonderful thing, indeed
These look so lovely… I may need to follow your lead. I always feel Noro in the store and think it’s beautiful but too harsh feeling for me, but if it softens a bit with washing…hmmm.
Your socks are just too inspiring not to give it a try.
Congrats on making the colors match! They turned out terrific, and I sort of like the pink strip on one of them.
