The Potential

Published by lolly at 10:45 am under Inspirations, Socktoberfest 2007

As I finish up the second sock of the Autumnal Equinox pair, my mind wanders to the next potential sock project… I have so many patterns to consider, and even more yarn on top of that. I am in a steady stashbusting mode, and I am committed to whittling down my stash. Looking through my stash, I have rediscovered some of the beauties inside.

Louet Gems

Possible color combination for Laila’s Socks (I love Terhi’s)

Yarn for my next [small] project...

The yarn was originally slated for Hilja’s Mittens, but after an unfortunate accident with a passive-aggressive black lab mix with a yen for destruction (Kris’s words: “You shouldn’t have left it out for her to get to!”), the mitten was ripped and no permanent damage was done… I considered the mittens again, but the gauge was a little wonky anyway, so I may go with some socks - like the Snickets. Isel’s lovely pair convinced me that I needed some too, and into the queue they went. As for the other colors - I was thinking about some Charades?

Koigu KPPPM

This lovely Koigu really caught my eye. I loved the speckles in the yarn. I have no idea what to do with it. Of course, there are no shortage or patterns out there, maybe you have a suggestion? After seeing Theresa’s little wristlets this weekend in the same colorway (or one very close) I could easily be swayed in that direction!

…speaking of the weekend: Theresa, Eunny, and I had a great Saturday! We went to see the Pittsburgh Penguins/Washington Capitals hockey game. We had a minor scare by a security officer who wouldn’t allow our knitting needles into the arena, but once we explained that we were friendly folk who meant no harm, he let us go… if he hadn’t this (unfocused) photo would not have been possible.

Theresa, Me, and Eunny - Blurry

Yeah, we are quite blurry (thanks stranger girl…) but we all have socks in hand! Knitting socks at a hockey game - the perfect way to celebrate Socktoberfest! (and the Penguins won 2-1! yea!) More photos from our fun night are here.

What a tantalizingly lovely post. Laila’s socks and your fascinating mittens-in-the-works inspire my to first buy Nancy’s book and, second, settle in for some colorwork. . .

Thanks for sparking some sweet reveries!

Looks like you girls had fun! So glad you were able to bring the knitting in.
Love the Gems in that mustard color.

snickets in that pink would be so pretty! i’d start on the Laila’s though - I looooove that pattern!

I chose the Snickets just days ago for my next pair. They’re gorgeous! I also spotted the Koolhaas Hat by Jared Flood (Brooklyn Tweed) that is close to the snickets. I’m committed to making both. The pattern is simplistic, yet textural and calling my name.

Because “snickets” are my new favorite sock pattern, I am going to push that you knit the pattern in something, anything….it’s great fun. Those mitts are pretty awesome though….hmmm, mitts….

    mmmm, i’ve always loved snicket!
i’m so glad you were able to take your needles into the hockey game…i just found out that i can’t take mine into jury duty. BOO! :(

bugger the lack of focus - I can’t tell if I like Eunny’s sweater or not! (it looks cabley, and so by default I think I like it). looks like you guys had fun at the game

Oh, but Bella looks so innocent!

I forgot that you’re a Penguins fan, you should try to make it up here to a game before they tear down the old arena. It may be old and run down, but I’m going to miss it when it goes.

FYI: You can see a better picture of Eunny’s cardigan here. She said it is an older Adrienne Vitadinni pattern.

So jealous! I’ve been meaning to get knitters together for a Caps game so we can yell a lot and wave our pointy sticks to scare people! Looks like you guys had fun (even if you are a Pens fan!).

Knitter types are pretty dangerous. We may get all wound up and trying knitting someone into submission.

Looks like a great time and Yay Penguins!

Knitting at hockey looks like so much fun!

  13. scouton 23 Oct 2007 at 5:40 pm

This just made me totally giggle. I think the thing a security gaurd has to worry about at a hockey game are your needles! Maybe if a fight broke out you could throw your needles out onto rink and give them weapons?

  14. Theresaon 23 Oct 2007 at 5:43 pm

Yah, I had such fun. Thanks again for organizing!

Have you used the Louet Gems before? I almost bought some at Stitches, but put it down cause I already had four new skeins.

  15. Wendyon 23 Oct 2007 at 5:51 pm

Go Pens! Being that I now live in the DC area I’m sure that’s the wrong thing to say around here… but my heart still lives in the ‘Burgh.

I’ve fallen in love with all of your sock yarns and wish my computer came with pet-o-vision. I just want to reach out and touch them!

  16. Deeon 23 Oct 2007 at 6:14 pm

Looks like a good time was had by all!

Sitting in a hockey arena sounds wonderful. It’s still in the 90’s here!!! Where, oh where is our fall weather??????

  17. connieon 23 Oct 2007 at 6:42 pm

Sounds like you had a fun time, Lolly :)

And the possibilities (both designs and yarn) you’ve dangled for your socks are tempting. I’m partial to Charades myself, but all of the designs you mentioned would be so pretty!

  18. Heatheron 23 Oct 2007 at 7:59 pm

A hockey game with pals–right on!!

  19. Jennaon 23 Oct 2007 at 8:12 pm

Bella is a bad girl!! I can’t believe she touched your knitting. She probably looked at it wither her laser goat eyes and burned it :)

Maybe in honor of your weekend, you could use two colors of that yarn to make a lovely pair of Anemoi mittens. I know that I deeply covet those.

    Go stashbusting!

  20. tiennieon 23 Oct 2007 at 10:33 pm

    Looks like fun!

How awesome to go stash diving and find beautiful yarn!

  21. Marilyn Terrellon 23 Oct 2007 at 10:58 pm

Well, you DO look like a pretty threatening trio!

  22. carrie mon 23 Oct 2007 at 11:34 pm

what do you call knitting at a hockey game? stitch n puck? stitch n goal? looks like fun!

  23. kateon 24 Oct 2007 at 2:49 am

I can’t decide if I’m more envious of the lovely yarns or of the fact that you got to go to a Pens game. I haven’t been to one in ages. :(

  24. Knit Nurseon 24 Oct 2007 at 8:54 am

lofl! I suspect the phrase ‘to widdle’ does not have the same meaning in America as it does in the UK! Over here if you told people you were ‘widdling down your stash’ you would be given some very strange looks indeed! (widdling is a kids word for urinating!) :-o

  25. Jenon 24 Oct 2007 at 9:47 am

Ah Lolly! You can’t go to a Caps game and root for the other team! Terrible!

I’m grooving on those browns! Can’t wait to see if/what you knit with it.

  26. Sarahon 24 Oct 2007 at 10:05 am

Ohhhhh, great projects you have lined up! The Koigu is lovely.

  27. Rebeccaon 24 Oct 2007 at 10:20 am

The sweater Eunny is wearing is so pretty! I would be surprised if she didn’t knit it and it is probaby her own design……….hmmmm……wonder what it is? Looks like a fun time was had by all!

  28. catherineon 24 Oct 2007 at 10:39 am

i just shorted out my keyboard! mmmmm koigu!

  29. melissaon 24 Oct 2007 at 7:37 pm

those two colors would make a lovely pair of laila’s socks. i love those earthy shades, they’re so perfect for fall!

  30. eyeleenon 24 Oct 2007 at 11:27 pm

It’s nice to know you can bring your knitting to the game!
    Beautiful koigu.

  31. Ruthon 25 Oct 2007 at 10:10 pm

What number is that Koigu? It looks like the one I’m working with at the moment … total autumn yumminess.
