From Whence It Came
There must have been a hex upon my house - everything I touched on Saturday night turned out wrong. I hit a major snag on my Aran Accent Vest - I dropped an important cable stitch off the needle and it laddered down far into the previous repeat. It was a very bad thing. In a fit of passion, I decided to rip everything I had done.
It was probably for the best - once I started ripping, I realized that it was going to be too wide.
I wish I had the same talent for Aran cabling as Jody.
Maybe it just was bad timing - I think Aran and I will reunite in the future - the match of pattern and yarn is just to perfect to ignore. Right now, I need some time and a boost of cable-y confidence.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I’m glad you’re not ditching it forever, though. I have yet to find enough yarn for mine.
Sending a boost of cable-y confidence your way.
Don’t feel bad. I was to the third repeat of the “pattern” and realized that I crossed a cable incorrectly on row 9 of the first repeat. I ripped all the way down and started back from there. It does seem to be coming out wide as well. Good luck when you do decide to cast on again for it. I can’t wait to get mine done so that I can wear it to work.
Oh no!!! Hope it comes back on the needles soon. I know you’ll rock it!
All knitters mojo is off at times. When I hit a snag, I knit something really easy to boost my confidence.
Amy
That is dreadful! I hope you try again soon - it was looking so good.
you gotta do what you gotta do. knit something small and satisfying to wipe the slate clean now.
Ha! Sorry that you had to rip it but the picture is funny. Sometimes I think the ripping is cathartic, it gives you a fresh start rather than a wip hanging over your head. On to better things!
You could always knit a pair of baby socks. Trust me, you’ll feel like Wonder Woman.
Don’t fret. Step away from the yarn and needles and breathe. I’ve been in the same situation many times. Actually, I made the knit cap from the same booklet. Since I didn’t use the needle size or yarn suggested I had to recalculate the cast on stitches.
Good luck.
Then, after completing first round of 8 rows and well into the second round, I realized I had repeated the WRONG rows. Frustrating. Unravel, unravel, unravel. I finished the cap this morning and it turned out cute.
I can’t wait to see the vest when you’re ready to try it again.
That’s one less UFO on the planet!
I’ve been looking for that book, for that pattern, ever since I saw it on your blog. I soooo want to do it. (That’s not to say I’ll have any better luck than you!!) I’ve been cabling for many years, but have never saved one that laddered way down on me, or fixed one way back that was crossed wrong. I would have ripped, too, at least back before the “foot of the ladder.” So sad.
ya’p. timing is everything! its a good feeling to move on.

Oh bad luck but probably wise - I think you need to feel the time is right for a project to really enjoy it
some projects just aren’t meant to be! rip, aran vest.
Whenever I see posts where people ladder and re-cross their cables, I’m just amazed. I’d rip my hair out. So, I’d rip my vest out too.
Sorry about the vest, but it made for a cute post!
We’ve all been there hon. It sucks to rip back when the yarn/pattern combo is good, but what sucks more is getting to the end and only then realizing it doesn’t fit right.
I’ve just mercilessly ripped back a bunch of albatrosses that were torturing me and frankly, it does feel good sometimes…
A moment of silence for the Aran Accent vest…
Okay, the 2007-2007 cracked me up. So that’s a silver lining to your aran cloud. But fret not, Lolly … you’ll get there! I will send you some cable mojo whenever you need it.
My condolences for the loss of the Aran Accent Vest. Isn’t it frustrating to lose a cable stitch?!
Oh no! Sorry that you had to rip!
R.I.P. Aran Accent! Here’s hoping it’ll be reincarnated and won’t give you any more trouble! You’ll get there—don’t worry.
Oh crap. Well, sorry to hear this. Maybe you’ll be inspired to start it up again soon
So sad. I hope you don’t mourn too long. The pattern is beautiful–you must give it another go.
I think that by ripping it out completely you have a better chance of returning to the project, rather than leaving it as a to-be-fixed-ufo.
What a bummer Lolly! I am sure that your path and the path of cables will cross again soon (pun intended.)
We all have off days…
need i remind you it took me 3 years and 3 months to do st brigid? and i can honestly say that things got much easier once i chose the right yarn and color. you’ll have the same luck too. promise
I had the same kind of weekend! I didn’t rip anything but was very tempted a couple of times. sigh.
Yup, I’ve been there many times!
Mine seems to be coming out a little wide as well. I’ve been toying with the idea of ripping and starting over with a smaller needle rather than changing the # of stitches.
I loved how yours looked in the Malabrigo!
[...] when I said that I had a bad Saturday night? Well, my path of destruction did not end with the (dearly departed) Aran Accent Vest. It reached [...]
ugh. so frustrating!!!!!
I’m sorry the knit didn’t work out. Sometimes a breather is just the thing for a project and give it another go later on.
