Alabama Accent

Published by lolly at 5:24 pm under Hiking / Walking, Photography, Travel, USA - Alabama

Maybe I did come back with a little accent, ya’ll. It kinda happens when you spend eight days with your family down in Dixie. Of course, I loved every minute of it. There was a beautiful weekend wedding (my cousin married his high school sweetheart – also named Lauren – funny thing is she now has my maiden name as her married name!) and a wonderful Thanksgiving in the country.

Wedding Favors - Homemade Honey

Best wedding favor ever: homemade honey from my uncle’s beehives!

The wedding was beautiful, and the reception was even better – it was held in an old Carnegie library building that is now an art gallery. Perfect location. We were taking a few notes too… there may be another wedding in the family in the near future…

The rest of the week was filled with hiking, delicious foods, a little romp around town, and some relaxation time (knitting AND reading!) . We spent the remainder of the week at my uncle’s cabin in Bankhead National Forest – out in the “sticks” as they say. I could actually see the stars at night! and could take a breath of fresh air! and could walk for a mile without seeing another person!

It was a little like stepping back in time – the trees were at their peak when we first arrived – fiery oranges and reds everywhere – and after a big storm on Thanksgiving eve, many trees lost their leaves. It was nice to hold onto fall for a little longer. Alas, winter is now here. I pulled out my scarves and caps. I am thinking about a new pair of mittens for myself…

*thank you SO much for the comments on my pullover!*

    Congratulations to the wedding couple!
Where is Bankhead National Forest? I am guessing it is near Birmingham??
I have family around the Montgomery area. Unfortunately, I did not get to see them over the Thanksgiving holiday. Hope you enjoyed your trip down south!

What part of Alabama are you from? Most of my family is from the Jasper area.

  3. lollyon 26 Nov 2007 at 6:44 pm

Rene’: Bankhead is north of Birmingham – in the north central part of the state, maybe an hour west of Huntsville? it is a beautiful place!

Susan: I have never lived in Alabama, but my dad moved there when he was a kid (both parents are originally from TN). My grandparents lived there, and my aunt, uncle, and cousins are still there.

    Thanks for your comments!

It looks like it was an all around lovely time to celebrate your family! The wedding pictures show the joy of the event. And your sweater turned out beautiful – how fun to be able to do the photo shoot “on the road” since it had been your travel project for the month. :)

I was wondering if you were in Mobile, because I swear I went to a wedding at a place that looked very similar to the place in your pictures. Anyway, looks like a lovely wedding and wonderful weekend! :)

What an absolutely stunning wedding cake!

Beautiful, evocative picture of that bare tree. Glad you had fun at the wedding. And regarding the name, something similar happened to a friend of mine. She and her brother got married in the same summer (not to each other!) Her brother’s fiance has the same name as her so while she was giving up her maiden name, her sister in law was getting her old name :)

Gorgeous! All of it. Great wedding favors too!

My aunt has the same name as my mom’s maiden name. Always weird when that happens. Your pictures are great.

Ahhh, stars. Isn’t light pollution a terrible thing?

The honey party favors – what a darling idea. You and your sisters are so cute. Thanks for sharing.

We city dwellers get out to where we can see stars and we go nutz! I loved the post and the country references to the sticks.

I am playing catch up here…firstly, my southern accent is still lingering from my dad being here over thanksgiving.Pensacola is close enough to Alabama to southernize the dialect. Seriously. Secondly, your Aftur sweater is gorgeous, you did a great job with it, Lolly! Thirdly, I like your calling cards, they are so cute and “you.” I have little moo cards. I attach them to things and have given them to a couple of yarn shop owners after I take pictures in their shops. Your Kris is a thoughtful one. A keeper!

Looks like it was a lovely time! Family, celebrations, lovely scenary and time for relaxation – sounds like a perfect trip to me. Have you tried the honey yet?

Alabama? And, you didn’t even mention the Iron Bowl?? War Eagle!

I had honey from my father’s bees for my wedding favours when I got married earlier this year! He keeps his bees just round the corner from the church I got married in. Congratulations to the happy couple! x

All I have to do is talk on the phone to any one of my Southern relatives and I get an accent. It looks like a wonderful week!

How beautiful! that cake is stunning!

  22. Dorothyon 27 Nov 2007 at 1:06 pm

That cake is gorgeous as is the Bride’s dress. It looks like a beautiful day. My uncle also has bees and although he did provide beeswax candles for the tables at my wedding, I never though to ask if he would consider doing up little jars of honey as favours! What a fantastic idea.

Beautiful forest photos. Nighttime wouldn’t be the same without stars. I missed that most when I lived in Winnipeg.

Everything looks beautiful. I think spring has returned here to Northeast Alabama. I am still wearing cotton blend socks, and thinking about getting handknit sweaters out. Roll Tide!

When my mother’s brother married my now aunt Jeanette, and my mom’s name is Jeanette, that meant that my aunt now has my mom’s maiden name. It cracks me up when things like that happen!

Lovely wedding, and that cake is awesome! And I love the favors too — sweet!
