Good Fortune Tweed
Every yarn tells a story – unfortunately I don’t know the full story of this yarn; neither the beginning, the middle, or the end – but I do know some of the important details.
A knitter fell in love with this beautiful tweed.
A detailed Fisherman’s sweater pattern was chosen.
Lovingly knit row after row.
Carefully crafted and wonderfully finished.

…
Shopping with my family.
Seeing the sweater.
Doing a double take.
Purple tag = 50% off of regular price.
$2.98 for a men’s handknit sweater.
…
Unraveling with my sister over Thanksgiving break.
Dreaming of the possibilities.
Nearly 3000 yards to work with.
I will call this my Good Fortune Tweed.

Yowza! Good find!
What a major find, how exciting that you came upon that sweater at that moment!
Delicious tweed! Just wanna eat it all up…. or knit it up… whatever you like.
that’s the most amazing find! what deliciously tweedy tweed and the price! oh the price would make even stinky itchy yarn a loveable find.
Wowsers, that is good fortune! Such beautiful yarn.
Very beautiful yarn. I love tweed. I love them I find things like that.
Wow, great find! That’s a a whole lotta tweedy goodness!
Wow. It is wonderful tweed.
Gosh! That is some gorgeous tweed you got!
pretty yarn! what did the original sweater look like?
Yowza! That is good fortune! You must’ve been a good girl this year!
Great Yarn! That is good fortune.
I shall call it Tim the Tweed, and it will be good
I didn’t realize it was a handknit sweater, I thought you lucked out with a machine knit. Even better! I’ve gotten good at spotting hand knits at thrift store, it’s a gift.
Good fortune indeed! Lovely yarn.
3,000 yards! Holy cow! (I can’t believe I just used that expression.) It’s lovely yarn, and it should make some lovely knits!
Wow! Wish I had such luck at the thrift store! Can’t wait to see what this yarn becomes…
Good find! I’m envious…in a good way.
I’d say so!!! I have to get back to the huge thrift store near me…..
Hi, Lolly,
I have been reading your blog for some time and I must tell you how refreshing it is! I look forward to your wonderful photos each time I click on “Lolly Knitting.” It is also such fun to see all of your knitting enthusiasm. Keep up the good work! Best, Catherine
Yum – great find!
OMG!…okay…I totally have to check out the GoodWill and see if I can score a great find;)
What a nice find! By the way, I made the Butternut Squash Gratin for Thanksgiving with my family, I think it was a hit!
from my monitor it looks exactly like Elsebeth Lavold’s Silky Tweed; exact same color and mix of flecks. What an amazing find. Thrift stores rock my world.
SCORE!!!! I love Value Village. They have the best stuff – at the best prices! I can’t wait to see what this knits up to be!
Kind of sad for the original sweater in a way, but I’m sure you’ll give it a good life and a lovely new home.
Unreal! Can’t wait to see what you knit out of it. Looks gorgeous.
wow. that is good fortune! lucky you. you’ve got the eye. i never find good stuff at thrift shops.
What a good find. I love that color so much. Now, I have the urge to go to my local Goodwill store. Yay!!
Lucky, lucky! I always scour the thrift shops for good yarn harvesting sweaters, but everything I find is stained or bad yarn. I do always wonder though, what happened to make someone let go of a handknit sweater?
What a terrific find! You always manage to get such amazing tweeds!
What a find!!
it’s beautiful!!!
You were close. Next time you are down this way on a Monday night, knit with us at the Barnes & Noble on University in Huntsville (7ish until closing).
How splendid! The yarn is beautiful, and I’m thrilled it was handknit. My boyfriend received a handknit (not by me) sweater recently that makes his chest look really bulky, like he works out all the time (he doesn’t). My plan is to take the sweater, unravel it, and knit him a new one that will fit and be lovely. Recycling sweaters: always worth it.
What a great find! Do you have any photos of the original sweater?
Indeed a good fortune for your eyes to land on this beautiful tweed. Good for you and the yarn!
Good fortune, indeed. I think something like this would be totally worth the hour drive south to get to the Thriftmart in New Haven. Totally.
That is amazing fortune. The yarn is gorgeous!
Gorgeous yarn! What a find.
What a steal!!! It’s beautiful.
I always feel a little twinge of sadness when I see hand-knit stuff at Value Village. All those hours… But glad to see this lovely wool has found a second life and in such capable hands. Can’t wait to see where it ends up!
3000 yards! Amazing. The work to wind it is a small price to pay for such a great deal on that beautiful yarn.
Wow! What a fabulous find! I love it when things like that happen…
Have fun knitting with that!

I always feel so sad when I see lovingly handcrafted items at resale shops because you know someone put time, effort and money into making something they hoped someone else would cherish. When the item is in new condition, you can figure it didn’t get much use/wear/whatever. I think of the time when all my hard work will end similarly if it avoids the landfill. At least if the materials are recycled, they get a new life and – just maybe – we can honour the memory of the original maker?
Wow, it looks like it’s in really good shape too! Almost all the wooly sweaters I find at thrift stores are a little too felted for recycling. Can’t wait to see what it becomes someday.
