Rhinebeck in Photos (and a few words)

I decided to go to the New York Sheep and Wool festival a few months ago.  I guess I wanted to see how it compared to the Maryland Sheep and Wool festival that is (essentially) in my back yarn.  It’s always something I had wanted to see and do, and this was the first year it worked out time-wise.  I traveled and stayed with a lovely group of friends in a quirky yet charming little cottage down by the river.  I met more people than I will be able to remember – friends old and new – and it was exciting and overwhelming and surreal all rolled into one.

Ladies of Zardoz

(My housemates! L-R  Mai, Anne, Carrie, Charlie, Kate, Em, Kelly)

We didn’t have water for 16 hours of our stay (not good!) but we made it work.  We ended up getting our water turned back on after a series of ridiculous events (involving calling the landlords’ parents!)  Who controls water with a *light switch*?

… Then we fested …

Stacey and Anne!

Ann and Em

Friends from Ravelry, Twitter, Flickr and the ol’ blog days – it’s amazing how vibrant our little community is!

And there was shopping and hugging and squeals of delight.  And while I had a ton of fun… I didn’t come home with a single skein!  I teased that the only thing I bought was a fresh-squeezed limeade!

And after a little rest and some sustenance, we were right back at it for the big Ravelry party that night.  Goodness me.

Wonderful pleasure to meet so many new friends (in real life!) and to see so many old friends.

Can we do this every weekend?

Lolly, it was just beyond fantastic to finally meet beautiful you!! I hope to see you again sometime, but to have more time with you!!

    Love all your gorgeous pictures.

Looks like you had a fantabulous time! If you make it again next year we’ll have to make a point of meeting. How to you think it compares to MDSW? I’ve never been.

“I guess I wanted to see how it compared to the Maryland Sheep and Wool festival that is (essentially) in my back yarn.”

That typo might be a little freudian. If Freud cared about yarn. I’m not sure what a “back yarn” would be anyway…

    Great Rhinebeck post!

When I first said hello to you, I remember some comment about a picture. Well, we both forgot to take one! Bummer, but maybe we’ll remember next year. (Or next weekend)

Also, you typed YARN instead of YARD which I’m only pointing out because I do that all the time.

  5. Lisa

Looks like you had a lot of fun! One of these years I will get to go!

It was SO fun to get to hang out with you at the Ravelry party!

There’s Mary Jane! What fun you all had. I’m super envious!

  8. Leslie

I totally noticed the “back yarn” Freudian typo too! So funny. Glad you had fun — thanks for sharing. (And I’m impressed with your purchasing restraint!)

  9. Erin

Looks like an amazing time. I have never made it to one of the big festivals–one of these years I will have to correct that.

  10. Beverly

I’m bummed we didn’t bump into each other! Looks like you had as much fun as I did!

  11. --Deb

    Darn–I can’t believe I missed you!

  12. Jennifer

Looks wonderful! I enjoyed going to Rhinebeck vicariously through your post. Bummer about the water!!!

  13. Jenna

Wow, it sounds like it was an amazing time to further forge the many great connections we have in this community. I love the photobooth pictures, the emblem is AMAZING! You showed amazing restraint, I’m so impressed! I hope this can be a regular venture for you. xoxo

So, how does it compare? Roughly the same? Better? Bigger? Worth the drive north?

  15. MarthaH

I can’t believe that I didn’t see you there. I was a little under the weather, and therefore, kept my focus on putting one step forward. So, while I accomplished that, I’m still bummed that I missed you. That’s especially because, now that I’ve moved, no more running into you at Starbucks. Best to you and I’m sure I’ll run into you at some fiber event in the future.

Looks like you had a really good time. Great pics!

I have been hoping to go back to Rhinebeck for three years now. I had a lot of fun and while it has gotten bigger each year (and I dislike crowds), I’m still wishing I had managed to go!

Maybe 2011 will be my year!

  18. Mel North

It looks like you had a fantastic time! Love seeing all the special knitwear, and fries dough? I am totally there next year!

  19. Cheryl

Water controlled by light switch definitely sounds bizarre! Looks like you all had a fantastic time though. I’d love to make there one year!

  20. Laura

Look at all those fabulous handknits! I really wish I could make it sometimes — too bad it’s on the opposite side of the country. One day!

  21. margaux

again – such a highlight to meet you!! now it’s time I think I went down to the MD festival next! (and you had me laughing with “down by the river”.. love)

  22. Kim S.

Oh, thanks for all the great pictures. I’ve still never been to Rhinebeck so I appreciate it whenever someone shares the experience digitally!

  23. mary jane

It was so so so much fun meeting you! Can’t wait for the next time!

  24. Diane

What a fabulous time! One of these days I’m going to make it to Rhinebeck, my dream destination :-)

I want to ask, do you know the pattern for the hats Ann and Em are wearing? Love them!

  25. Diane

Ahah – found the pattern in the Flickr comments, and … I know the designer! Off to stash dive now :-)

  26. Heather

It looks like so much fun! Next year I really want to go. Though I said that this year also…

  27. Chandler

Okay, I think this is going to call for a road trip or something, one of these years. Rhinebeck isn’t just at the top of a long list of to-do’s…it’s a list all in itself. Seems like it was a fabulous time, and you look so festive and lovely in your Eyja pullover! Your photos make me want to bury myself in yarn and autumn leaves.

  28. Judy

Looks like too much fun. I love the two hats your friends are wearing, purple and blue. Do you know what pattern they used?

PS Love your blog. Always fun to follow hockey loving knitters.
