Knitter’s Book of Socks

Many thanks to Potter Craft for sending this copy of the newly released The Knitter’s Book of Socks by Clara Parkes!  The release of the book coincided perfectly with Socktoberfest this year. If you are familiar with Clara’s writing, you know that this book is well-researched and is chocked full of useful information for all knitters.  Clara goes in-depth into what makes sock yarn – reminiscent of her work in her other books.  Quality information that you can use on your next trip to the yarn shop.

From Potter Craft’s site:

To help put the principles into practice, The Knitter’s Book of Socks offers 20 fresh, original patterns from today’s sock-design luminaries, including Cookie A, Cat Bordhi, Ann Budd, Nancy Bush, Anne Hanson, and Melissa Morgan-Oakes. The socks presented here run the gamut from simple knit-and-purl combinations suitable for beginners to innovative designs with lush colorwork, swirling cables, and delicate lace.

Understanding the elements of yarn is the first step on every successful sock knitting journey. With this book as your guide, you’ll learn how to make any sock yarn shine and love every pair of socks you knit.

Hickory Socks

I wish I could show you all of the patterns because they are all fun – ideal for all knitting styles and skill levels.  You can see a small slideshow on the publisher’s website, but it doesn’t do the book justice!  It will keep you busy knitting for years to come.

Want to try knitting some of these patterns?  I’m doing a book giveaway for the finale of this year’s Socktoberfest!  All I need from you is a comment telling me how long you have been knitting socks.  Are you a brand new knitter wanting to try? Are you a seasoned pro who has seen it all?  Bring it on, and this lovely book could be yours!

I will choose the winner randomly on Wednesday, November 2nd and contact the winner and announce it here.  Stay tuned!

I’ been knitting for more than 20 years,
I have only knit 3 pairs of socks…. All in
    The last year.

  2. Katie

I knit my first pair of socks last fall. I actually finished them in October, which happens to be my knitting anniversary! One year before, in October 2009, I started knitting and swore I’d stick to shawls and blankets. Now they happen to be one of my favorite projects to knit!

  3. Marianna

I’ve knit a few pairs but consider myself a beginner in the sock department.

  4. Rpc

I was the stubborn newbie who didn’t want to knit a scarf or hat first. I wanted to knit socks. So I searched until I found someone who let me join the sock knitting class. I knew how to knit and purl just didn’t ever start/finish a scarf. Matter of fact I still haven’t knit a scarf in the 9 years I have been knitting socks.

  5. Madeline

I first knit a pair of socks out of worsted weight in 2009 and soon after graduated to 4-ply sock yarn and 2.25mm needles – I was hooked on the tiny-ness. And I can’t stop!

  6. Genny

Ravelry tells me that I knit my first pair of socks in March of 2007. Almost 5 years!

  7. julie

I think m first pair of socks must have been in the summer of 2006 – so it has been 5 years. In my mind socks are the perfect kind of knit and I often have several pairs on going at once. Thanks for having this fun contest. The book looks great!

  8. Chandler

I still have never knit a sock. Hmm. That seems strange to me, especially after 12 years of knitting. Is there some sort of psychological thing there, I wonder?

  9. Noirem

I’ve only just started on socks, cast on my first pair in June, but I am hooked! I would love a book on socks!

  10. krakatoa

No sock knitting for me, yet. I did just recently decide it was time though. Maybe this book is just what I need to start.

  11. Deb in PA

I’ve been knitting socks for about 11 years now. I can remember the time I thought anyone with more than 10 skeins of sock yarn was crazy. (I now have over 200 in my stash….)

  12. Katie V

ahh! would love to get this, i bought a skein of sock yarn to try but i’m afraid to start! this would help a lot!

  13. Judy

I got the sock bug about three years ago and haven’t stopped since. I devour as many books as possible always trying to improve my technique or challenge myself with new patterns. I love Clara Parkes and have her first two books. This would be a nice addition to my collection especially during the long winter nights in Vermont where socks are required!

  14. Morgan H.

I’ve been knitting socks for 7 years. I took a class at my LYS and never looked back:)

  15. Barbara

I am a new sock knitter, I would love to have this book. Thanks.

  16. Cathy

I have been knitting socks for about 5 years. Love them!

  17. Kristyn

I have been knitting socks for about 4 years now. I still consider myself a beginner since I have only made a few pairs.

  18. Tracey S

I knitted a half of a sock about a year and a half ago. I probably need to start over.

  19. Rebecca

Wanting a pair of hand-knit socks is what made me start knitting again. It was right about the time I started reading your blog, possibly 2003 -2004?

  20. Lynn

I took a cuff down sock class 7/8 years ago and have loved knitting socks since. I have tried toe-up, but find that I always return to cuff down. Took a magic loop class for socks this past March and enjoyed a break from double points. Would love a chance to win this book. Thank-you, Lynn

  21. Julie

I’ve been knitting socks for about 8 years.

  22. Eloise

I have been knitting socks since 2007. And they are still one of my favorite things to knit.

  23. Jenn

I think it’s been about 6.5 years. Not as productive lately, but still love knitting socks!

  24. Helena Dias

I’ve been trying to knit sock that fit (that is essential) for the past year. Still struggling but I’m persistent.

  25. christen

Hahahahaha. My first socks. Okay, so my then-boyfriend (now-husband and by-end-of-this-story fiance) & I were leaving Baltimore to vacation in Jersey, visit my brother in NY, go to a wedding in NY and come back home. I decided it would be a great time to follow the sock pattern on the ball band of this hideous pink and other neon crazy colored sock yarn. problem: I had no idea what the anatomy of a sock was. Gusset? I searched a dictionary for clues. It was a mess. I did all the slip stitches in the heel flap knitwise because I didn’t know better and as a result could hardly get a new stitch through those stitches. And turn a heel? What? They were awful. The good news is that once i had access to internet, I was golden and knit my now-husband engagement socks (Thuja). And when I had the chance to teach a friend to knit? I taught her to knit by making socks on a circular. Just get the crazy over with. She loves knitting now and I love socks!

  26. christen

    P.S. that was 2007.

  27. Siew

Is it bad that I can’t remember how long I’ve been a sock knitter? I seem to have lost my sock mojo lately and my favorite pair has a hole in the toe. Maybe this book is what I need to get going again!

  28. Beverly

What a great giveaway! I’m always game for a new sock book.

  29. Emily

Oh dear, I don’t know if I remember when I started knitting socks. I started knitting in general in May 2006, so it was probably sometime in 2007. Basic toe-up socks in KnitPicks yarn.

  30. LoriG

This is a difficult one because I’m not quite sure! I know I started knitting socks shortly after I started knitting so it must be about 7 years, more or less.

  31. Shannon O.

I have been knitting socks for 1 month. Yep. I just finished my first pair about a week ago and immediately cast on my next pair. I’m hooked.

  32. patrice

I’ve been knitting socks pretty much for as long as I’ve been knitting – 9 years or so (or is it 8?). Anyway, socks were, I think, my third project, or maybe second.

  33. lesley

I’ve been knitting socks for about two years, However for the first 18months I had only been knitting the same sock over and over again, but now I’m getting into lace ankles, and mock cables. I never realised how versatile sock patterns could be!

  34. Issy Thomas

10 years of socks. Not consistently though. I have a friend who always has a pair in progress. She would love this book.

  35. Kathode Ray Tube

I’ve been knitting socks inconsistently for about 4-5 years. I took a class in toe up socks with circular needles and that’s the way I do it. Much easier than dropping stitches on dpns!!

  36. Callie Karen

I have been knitting socks for the last 3 years…but I’ve only made 2 finished pairs :)

  37. Harriet

I knit my first pair of socks about 3 months after I taught myself to knit. They were to be a Christmas gift for my Dad. This was in late 2003. : )

  38. Sara

I started knitting sock about 5 years ago. I had never seen the appeal – but once you start, they are like potato chips! Can’t stop knittin’ ‘em!

  39. Deanna

I first knit socks about 10 years ago. Don’t know why I stopped, but I’ve wanted to get back into smaller projects and have been thinking about socks again. This book sounds like just the thing to get me back at it!

  40. carol

I have been knitting socks abour seven years–and enjoy doing so immensely.

  41. Katie

I’ve been knitting socks irregularly since 2007, though to go with your recent Yosemite trip, I visited Yosemite in July and brought a pair of socks up when I was rock climbing the domes in Tuolumne as well as down in Yosemite Valley on Glacier Point Apron! Extreme knitting socks makes them more fun to wear. :)

  42. Heather

I have been sock knitting for about 8 years. I love it. I am amazed at how much better and faster I am than when I started. This socktober I was able to complete two pairs of socks, one Christmas stocking and begin another pair.

  43. Sarah

I’ve been knitting socks for years, but not so much lately. I can knit about any kind of socks i set my mind to make. I have come to really like knitting them toe-up with short-row heels.

  44. duni

i’ve been knitting socks for about 6 years, although i’ve fallen out of love with it lately. i think picking up a copy of this lovely book might put me back in the sockish frame of mind! :) i love Clara’s books.

  45. Marilyn

I’ve been knitting socks for about three years now. I have so many more sock patterns in my Ravelry queue that I want to knit up! Thanks for the chance to win!

  46. Ingrid

I’ve been knitting socks for 6 years only – out of knitting for 35!

  47. Elisha

I’ve been knitting for about 6 years and I just cast on my first sock last month (yay!). When I heard about this book I thought it would be a great one to have. Thanks for the giveaway :)

  48. Chels

Hello! I knit, but I am in school full-time at the moment. That means no knitting. Now, my mom is a sock knitter and I am a lucky recipient. Would love to win and give mom the book!

  49. Brenda

I’ve been knitting socks for about 12 years or so. I love to try new patterns and techniques. I just knit my first toe up pair last year.

  50. ccr in MA

I started knitting socks five years ago. I resisted learning, but finally dove in and now love it! Of course, I’ve been on a one-pattern sock knitting jag for over a year (the 8th pair is almost done), so I’m not the most adventurous sock knitter! I love this pattern, but maybe I could use some inspiration.
